Nice looking card with great centering. That is one of my favorite action shots. One of my pickups for the month was this 1975 Hostess Twinkies Yount Proof. This is the only Proof I have seen.

Nice '73 Ryan. Always thought that is an under appreciated card - from his greatest season. It can be a task to find it centered that well too.

I had a pile of Joe Torre stuff in my baseball room; and my buddy was sending some cards in, so I finally got off my duff and sent them in.

They finally arrived yesterday. Added some key gems to my Torre PSA collection, including a '68 Venezuela, and a Jell-o or two. The only letdown was that I missed a pinhole in my other Venezuela, so it came in a low grade. But a couple of cards came in as the highest graded examples, so I was ok with that!

Nice Torre collection! Underrated player. My favorite of your cards is the 68 Venezuelan. I'm chipping away at that set and have a raw Torre I'll be subbing soon as part of a group from that set.

Just some more 70's cards, this time filling out some of the better players and some more commons for my 1969 and 1972 sets. Once I get #560 of the 72 set I'll every card up to #657 and then I just need 54 various high numbers. Still have a little ways to go with the 1969 (73 cards remaining), but the series are pretty well represented, unlike the other years for whatever reason.

I would love to pick up a Joe DiMaggio. Hope it's ok to ask, but what does one cost in less than perfect condition?

My grandmother's sister was married to one of the DiMaggio boys who didn't play ball, and my Dad's family and the DiMaggio came from the same town, Isolla delle Faminne. My grandfather and Joe's father were all fishermen.

jason.1969
07-16-2016, 12:02 PM
The one above cost me $40. Note that the Exhibits issues are postcard size and not viewed in the same league as for instance 41 Play Ball!

My "main" Joe D is a 1939 PB that cost me about $400.

Thanks fellas - I once attempted this set, and had them all in SGC 84 to 88. The red series (especially Ashburn and Musial) were tough to find at my price point and generally did not have the centering I wanted.

The issue has some heavy stock, so mid grade seems to present much better than other issues. Owning a Mantle already, I may try this for the second time. Beautiful, affordable, and most importantly to me, a nice small set.

Thanks guys! I don't think any other issue has been more fun to collect for me personally.

I have a distinct story that goes along with each of those cards, which adds to the enjoyment for me -- the Jackie was my first ever purchase on Net54; the Ruth was gotten through another collector's extreme generosity; the DiMaggio through a Widow of a former collector who has now become a family friend; the Williams was a last-second kamikaze bid on eBay, etc etc. Good memories.

Still have the last 2 toughies to go, though -- the Feller and Paige... *gulp*

Also, just realized I forgot to add ol' Tobacco-Chewing Honus to the lineup...

Are you using the site's "Manage attachments" under additional options below when you post?

If so, you can add multiples there. If using a phone etc, I don't believe that is an option?

Got my PSA grades. Pretty strict but they all got slabbed. No surprises. Going in my safety deposit box for now, but one day when I do sell them they will be the "nicest 2.5" out there:

2.5 Jackie
2.5 Jackie
3.5 Mantle
4 Williams

As a Wally Moon and Ray Katt collector, I was beside myself being able to pick up these Venezuelan Winter League cards that both pre-date their generally accepted rookie cards. Picked them up about a month ago, just got them back from SGC (obviously more for authenticity than grading) - now, they're the only 2 graded examples in the entire set.

Tough grading on those cards, imo. Are there creases, stains or something else that we can't see going on with them?

There is a light crease in the yellow area off Jackie's shoulder.

The bowman had a light horizontal surface wrinkle seen on either side on the Front, and on the Reverse two longer diagonal wrinkles are there. Neither amount to creases. (Hence the 2.5)

Yes they are overly tough lately, people say they are protecting the value of current high grade vintage

Given the wrinkles you disclose here and PSA's own published guidelines,'it sounds like those 2 grades were pretty fair.

Thanks for the explanation.

I guess rules and guidelines are exactly that, but I still can't get my head around some of the grades I see PSA give!

PSA's biggest issue is consistency, especially in the low grades. I have some Venezuelans graded 2 or 2.5 with paper loss on front. This should not be possible.

I agree. Any paper loss that I have seen have been PR-1's at best.

Filing in some more for 1969-the g is on the sleeve, not the card for the Palmer. I still have a few more SPs and HOFers to go on 1969. Also picked up a bunch of 1971 and 1972 cards that I'm waiting for. Down to 1 and 4 cards respectively, the Baker RC and the Rod Carew-Jerry Koosman cards.

MITCH f**king Williams, ala Bucky f**king Dent???

as a longtime (suffering) Phillies fan, I actually sent Mitch a sympathy card (c/o the Phillies in the winter of 1993, offering my *sincere* condolences on serving up that game/series winning home run) - I felt bad for Williams, and sat SPEECHLESS in my antique barber chair as I watched the *devastating* conclusion to that game vs the Blue Jays, but I felt horrible for him - AND myself, and suffering Phillies fans everywhere - after the "unreal" became REAL - dude got death threats, and while he DID f**k up, guy had 43 saves, and Fregosi went with what got him there...hindsight is 20/20, but...such is life.

thanks for the inclusion of Mitch, herbc, as while it WAS a dark moment for this Phillies fan, it was a reminder that LIFE - and baseball - isn't always perfect, or predictable, another reason I *love* this game.

Following up that 54 Bowman with another rare Teddy Ballgame. Today is a huge day for my collection!!

I have been working on the '59 Fleer Ted Williams set for a long time. For a good portion of that time, I have been just one card short of complete, needing only the very tough short printed #68. I have known that budget dictates a poor copy, but I have wanted one in a PSA or SGC slab so that I know it's not altered or even counterfeit. PSA 1's don't come up very often and I missed a couple of them. But this week I finally landed what to me is a huge card, and completed my favorite set of all time. This card is in piss poor condition, but IT'S MINE and I love it!

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa463/dbesse27/59F%20Williams/Ted%2068%20SP.jpg

Some of you spend hundreds of dollars on cards all the time, but in my collecting world, $141 is a huge chunk of change. Still, my snipe was even higher, because this was the right card at the right time and I had to have it.

A summary of my journey collecting this set.... In the summer of 2013 I bought my first 3 cards, beaters for $8 total, and I was hooked. Over the next 2 years I chipped away at a raw set, with condition not really a factor. By the end of June, 2015, I had 79 cards and was only missing the SP above. And then everything stalled. My only progress in the past 13 months has been one gorgeous PSA 8 upgrade that was a Christmas gift from my good friend Casey. The card I needed just wasn't available slabbed in poor condition. When it was, my snipes were too low. Finally, Tuesday, after 13 months, I completed my set. Final stats: the PSA 1 SP above, the PSA 8 below, and 78 raw cards..... accumulated with $484 over 3 full calendar years. But today I am DONE.
