What is happening with prices? Is this just a bidding war between a few collectors or are prices like this here to stay?
From Love of the game
1909-11 T206 Zach Wheat Signed Card - PSA/DNA MINT 9 5,000
1909-11 T206 Signed Rube Marquard (HOF) - PSA/DNA AUTH $3,250
Signed 1933 Goudey #58 Lefty O'Doul PSA/DNA $1,100
Signed T205 Walsh $5000

I think that vintage on-card autographs have always been an under-appreciated facet of the hobby. It doesn't take too many bidders to cause a run-up on prices for signed vintage cards, especially when it is a popular issue that has several collectors.

While a thin market (the inventory in some cases is scarcer than hen's teeth), it is a market that has some very dedicated collectors and some very deep pockets. I am rarely surprised by realized prices on some of the prewar material and I don't expect the escalation to stop.

I am a bit surprised, however, by the recent surge in value of signed rookies that are still alive and signing.

I've noticed rise in the prices of signed prewar cards, but I haven't yet seen that spread to postwar cards across the board. Last Sunday, over 200 signed 1953 Topps auctions ended, most of them far below what I expected. The only exceptions seemed to be Yankees, Dodgers, and a handful of high numbers and rookies.

As the cosigner of 3/4 of these, all I can say is Amen.

I think the Marquard surprised me most since there are alot out there and last year we were astounded when they hit $1500. If 10 more hit the market I would think prices would plummet. Kind of want to kick myself for trading signed T206 to Paul of Clarke and Young

I think it varies. I have seen very strong prices for T cards and cards from that era. There is strong bidding for many signed 33 goudeys, especially the more difficult ones, as it seems to be a popular set to collect. Commons seem to get less interest as there are a lot that come up for sale. The 34 Goudeys are very much hit and miss. I paid close to $800 with BP for Hi Bell, who died in 1949, but only $160 for Ed Brandt, who died in 1944. Neither slabbed. Go figure. The other 1930's cards also seem to have very labile sale prices. Even many HOFers are all over the place. 1 yr ago I sold a 33G Travis Jackson for $800 as a best offer. A couple weeks ago, a board member had one sell in an open auction for the mid $200s. Again go figure.

hi mark,

i'm looking into picking up a few of the common goudey hofers...terry gehringer hubbell etc. been tracking a few prices and seems like they can be obtained for in the low $200 range, is that accurate?

I was watching the Stargell that ended last night and that went for a lot more than expected. It seems there are a few people really bidding up the prices at least on some of the signed rookies

Depending on shape, and closer to 250 now for the easiest/worst ones

HOF signed rookies are very much an entity unto their own. The Stargell rookie is incredibly tough to find signed. I am casually trying to complete a signed Stargell run and went balls to the wall on the only vintage period signed example I had ever seen and likely the only one that exists. This one beat my record setting purchase by some 50%. If I had to guess, I would say there are maybe 10 examples known to exist. There are FFFFAAAARRRR more than 10 people collecting HOF signed rookie cards. Thus I am not necessarily surprised by this price.

Just as an FYI....the 1964 signed Stargell I am finding even tougher to locate than the rookie was!
