psa 7 sold for 9k + buyers in verkmans auction last nite
is it my imagination or doesnt psa require that the perforation lines ALL be present just like 59 bazooka transogram etc otherwise the card is graded authentic?
opinions?

Not sure why this should be any different. Same concept.

Yeah, not entirely clear how they saw it.

The card wouldn't have lines at the sides. but did have them top and bottom. Both are partly there, but I'd expect to see the entire line.

Would PSA grade this do you think? I THINK all the cutlines show.

Yes Peter I believe they would.

Larry,

Would you mind posting a link? For some reason, I am only able to view up to lot # 719 and not beyond. Thank you.

Does it have the tab? Do any of the Batemans have the tab? I don't think it was issued, but rather backdoored or a dumpster dive was necessary to obtain.

no tab thats why we are looking for the perforation lines
yes there is a bateman with tab

I believe I have seen reference to one that was in an old Mastro catalog.

I believe that they would give it a numerical grade, Pete. From the Kevin Glew 12/20/11 article in the Sports Market Report, '59 Bazooka's will receive a numerical grade when "virtually all" of the dashed border is visible. Nice card--I once owned a "7" (cannot for the life of me remember whether it was PSA or SGC, but ALL of the dashed line was indeed present), sold it, and have regretted that ever since. Maybe my '55 Exhibit Postcard Back Mantle will make up for it, with only two total having been graded by both services the last time I checked.

Best wishes as always,

Larry

Thanks Val. I've have hoped to one day own a Bateman for over 30years. Unfortunately, the winning bid would have cased a bit of a riff with my wife. :p But one day...

The sale on June 1 of a PSA-graded (NM 7, no tabs) example of the 1963 Pepsi John Bateman soda-carton stuffer card for $10,722 inspired me to work up a reprint of one of the hobby's rarest modern cards.

Back around 1980 when Krause Publications was launching Baseball Cards magazine and working on the purchase of Sports Collectors Digest from the Stommen family, I first became aware of the 1963 Pepsi-Cola team set of the Houston Colt .45s.

As a kid collector in 1963, being about 1,250 miles north of Houston, I'd never seen these regionals.

I broached the subject with my mentor Larry Fritsh one night while attending a minor league ballgame. He advised me not to start a set that I couldn't finish. He explained that the '63 Pepsi Bateman was even rarer than the T206 Wagner, and in those pre-internet days was almost never seen in hobby circles. I don't recall now whether or not Larry had the card in his own collection.

In the 2014 edition of its National Pastime publication, the Society for American Baseball Research detailed the story behind the Bateman rarity. You can read it here: Bateman article .

The article was more recently revised or reprinted in Sports Collectors Digest.

Evidently the sole known hoard of '63 Batemans is going to be slowly doled out into the hobby. At prices such as that realized in the June 1 auction, most of those who need the card to complete their set are going to have to go without, unless or until the trickle of available cards eventually slakes the pent-up demand.

The previous last time I know of the sale of a 1963 Pepsi Bateman was in the 2011 Robert Edward Auction annual sale. A Bateman, unslabbed and also without top and bottom tabs, was sold in a lot with 40 other 1963 Pepsi Colt .45s, comprising a complete set of 16 plus duplicates. That lot went for $6,463.

Just to try my hand at recreating one of the modern hobby's fabled rarities, I put together this reprint of a 1963 Pepsi John Bateman. Unlike all of the known examples of the real thing, my reprint has both top and bottom tabs. It is discreetly marked as a 2016 production.

Larry Fritsh ...advised me not to start a set that I couldn't finish.

Larry, I agree in general, but...

There are many that still attack the Monster even though they know they will never own the Wagner. That being said, Larry's comment is the reason I will never attempt the '52 Topps set because I know I will never be able to purchase the Mantle.

Growing up maybe 12.50 miles from the Astrodome, The 1963 Pepsi set has been the *dream* set for me since I first heard about it in the mid '70's. My desire to purchase the card is strong. Unfortunately, my quest to even see the card in person has been as successful as Ponce de Leon's quest for the fountain of youth. When it is all said and done, hopefully my quest will be more successful than his. :D\

I have come to realize there are certain cards I will likely never get to complete certain sets, either because they never come up or when they do go for obscene amounts of money. I have a Topps run 48 and 51 to 2016. That includes all 5 sets that Topps put out in 1951. Among them was The Current All Star set which consists of 8 issued cards and 3 cards, Roberts, Stankey and Konstanty, that were never issued at retail. There are likely less of them in existence than the Bateman.

So, I have settled for the creation of another board member to fill the void and spots in my binder. Like Bob Lemke's Bateman, no one would confuse these 3 with the real things in hand.

Bob often sells his creations on his blog site. I have bought several. I think his Bateman would be a great fill in until the real one comes along. I used one of Bob's creation to fill my void of card 145 in my 1958 Topps set :)

Bob---are you ever going to take on the 3 1960 legends, Cimoli, Hadley and Throneberry

I've had the trio of 1951 All-Stars on my to-do list for years.

Truthfully, never thought of replicating the 1960 proofs trio. I don't believe I have the front photos in my files.
