I think the King of Post War cards deserves his own pick up/ show off thread. Mantle cards are white hot and I want a place to go to see Mantles exclusively. Post them as you get them, or if you just want to show off...that's great too.
I'll start the thread with this beauty which arrived today.53 is the next 52.

Just picked this one up for an upgrade on my 62 set...absolutely stole it and was shocked I won. I even had room in my cheap bid. Pays to be a night owl, and I am amazed that anyone would end their auctions at such odd times...

Also picked up another 61...another set upgrade...

Ok John,

You've piqued my interest. What did you get the '62 Mantle for? That is one year of his cards that I believe to be undervalued.

Nice card.

I hope that isn't a pen mark on the Mick's forehead on the 62 ?

Great cards so far. The '52 is off the charts, Bob. And Dave's initial entry has me still going back to see if I can see an iota of "off-centeredness". And so many other greats ones shown, very nice...
'
Don't know what the technical grade will be but this '51 has some good eye appeal in hand in light of the wrinkle/crease running vertically on the right. It runs about 63.5% of the width of the card (that's a joke but it might be close). Oh well....
My goal as an auctioneer was to have the card in hand look exactly the same as on the screen. I remember adjusting a few settings so they would come out that way when the lucky winner viewed them in hand. This looks as good or better in hand. When I first got into collecting again, as a 30 something, I had a PSA 6 1951 Mantle and eventually sold it when I went backward, time-wise, into pre-war. This card probably has better eye appeal, the crease not withstanding than that first one.

Awesome Micks, Pokerplyr! As good as it gets on the 1951. Better than some higher grades. That 1953 looks dead to rights centered. The 62 and 57 were the ones you posted from MattyC, right? I can tell they were his from the centering! Man that 62 looks like a 9 from this distance!!!!!!

Dave, heartiest of congratulations on this acquisition. I could look at that gem all day. Come on SGC, why not a 98 GEM!?!?!?!? At least PSA will reward cards with a Gem MInt 10 here and there, but you guys VIRTUALLY NEVER DO!

I know, I know, they must have spotted SOMETHING on the backside to give it "just" the 96 MINT. Grading, after all, involves the whole card, and not just the most important front side.

Regardless Dave, even better than the near-perfect centering are the outstanding colors and picture registry. In the coin world, as I remember they term that "a perfect strike", which this Mantle blasts out of the park!!!

As Maurice Chevalier said in that wonderful Disney movie, In Search of the Castaways, ENZHOY IT!:D

Thanks for sharing this masterpiece Red Heart Mickey Mantle with us. ---Brian Powell

CW, your 1951 Mantle Rookie just simply LOOKS better than 99% of them.

Yes including sevens, sixes, and fives. What an AWESOME and unique card you have there.

Thanks, guys, for the comments on the '51B. No creases and, yep, the stain on the back brought it down to the G grade.

Those do look much better, irv. Nice pair!

That signed duo looks amazing, Bob!

That '64 Venezuelan is a great card, Matt.

Thanks, CW!

Some pretty nice cards in this thread! Wish I had of collected more over the years.

I didn't know you had a Post Canadian panel Mike?!?! How is that not in my collection? I say you be a good friend a gift that one to me :). I've got a really beat 1964 Topps Giant I could trade you :)

Hey Chris, to show you what a good friend I am, I'll gladly trade you the Canadian Post panel. Either one of your 1952 Topps Mantles would do. I'll even let you pick which one. :)

Some really nice Mantles shown guys. I'm not much into autographs, but the '51 Bowman and '52 Topps autographed cards are sure nice.

I don't know how wise it would be to follow my stock tips:

'Instead of re-investing your dividends, use them to purchase cardboard.'

I will say that Mantles appear to hold their value more than many stocks.

My scanner makes my cards, especially the borders, look gray?

They are much whiter in hand but I can't figure out how to get them to look better?

Not a card but a pic of my Uncle Sam with Mickey Mantle at a 1958 World Series game. (For those that haven't seen it?)

Not a deserter but if I am going to do local shows around here (DFW) I have to have some eye candy for my cases. This '52 is a collection card but will have a high price on it....then as time goes by, the price will come in line when I need to let 'er go. It's all fun...and who knows, he may stay forever. I have always liked '52 MIcks and have been runner up on a few over the years, in auctions.

Wondering if you have a PSA registry?? guessing you do

I do, sort of. I have the basic Mantle one--the master one is too intimidating, and it annoys me to have to get multiple versions of panels/coins/etc. that aren't really different.

I already have a lot of the cards/stuff included in the set, but a huge majority of them are not graded. Stuff I have but still need to scan:

1951 Wheaties
1955 Armour Coins (correct and incorrect spelling)
1960 Topps Tattoos (portrait and autographed ball)
1961 Nu-Card Scoops (both)
1961 Post Cereal
1961 Topps Stamps
1962 Jell-O
1962 Post Canadian
1962 Post Cereal
1962 Salada-Junket Coins
1962 Shirriff Coins
1962 Topps Bucks
1962 Topps Stamps
1963 Jell-O
1963 Post Cereal
1963 Salada-Junket Coins
1963 Topps Peel-Offs
1964 Bazooka Stamps
1964 Topps Coins (all three)
1964 Topps Giants
1964 Topps Stand Ups
1965 Challenge the Champs
1965 Old London Coins
1965 Topps Embossed
1965 Topps Transfers
1966 OPC
1966 Topps Rub-Offs
1967 Dexter Press
1967 Laughlin Yanks vs. Cards WS 1964
1967 Topps Pin-Ups
1967 Topps Who Am I?
1968 American Oil (left and right)
1968 Topps Plaks Checklist
1968 Topps Plaks
1969 Topps Mantle White Letter
1969 Topps Stamps
1969 Transogram (and side panel)

Forgot to add this scan to the thread (oops):

That is super cool that they slabbed one of Bobs great creations.

Wholeheartedly agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!:) Bob did a beautiful job on that Red Man Mantle. I carefully placed mine in a mylar SNUG, made by Bill Cole Enterprises, then in a thick Capital Plastics four-screw holder. I would proudly display it with original period Mantles because it's a beautiful work of art.

In the same theme, Bob Lemke did a swell job on his creation of a complete 1963 JELL-O Black Raspberry box with the free prize card being Mickey Mantle. However, Bob did not do a reprint as such. Using the gorgeous advertising poster photo of Mick that JELL-O displayed in supermarkets and grocery stores at the gelatin aisle, Bob cropped the best part of the photo and gave his JELL-O box this variant photo of Mickey. Looks spectacular.:D

Fantasy Mickey Mantle cards, if they're done well, find a very appreciative fan in me. ---Brian Powell

The center 2 boxes are Bobs amazing Mantle Jello Boxes. I bought the originals from him and have made them as small as a quarter up to real size with Jello inside the box. They make great display pieces.

Chris, why doesn't the 68 game card have rounded corners? Is yours a proof?

I've seen them referred to as proofs--and I think one of the major grading companies slabs them proofs--but my thought has always been that someone just cut down a previously uncut sheet to make this.

As you should, MikeGarcia. The 1960 Post Cereal Mickey Mantle is a choice, elegant, and breathtaking Mickey Mantle masterpiece. Obviously, it's one of my own favorites, as I placed it dead center on the cover of my newly-released book, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN.

This is an old pickup you might say. Growing up in northern nj, my neighbor across the street was harold rosenthal...a sportswriter for the herald tribune. He wrote many books on football and a few on baseball. He sent mickey mantle a letter asking him some questions in 1951. This is a copy of it...he donated the original to the hall of fame...I wonder if they ever display it?

Well not a recent pickup but I've only been lurking here for a couple weeks so figured I'd show off one of my best pickups in my 37 years of collecting.

Bought it in September 2007 on eBay quite impulsively. I was just starting to expand out from hockey (as I had recently achieved my goal of having the rookie card of every 1000 point man in NHL history) and into the other three major sports and after winning the auction I had some big time buyers remorse as it appeared I had overpayed by around 25%.

Here was the situation...I did no research prior to bidding, I placed said bid in the last few seconds of the auction, and only discovered the auction in its last few minutes. Point being I had no idea what I was doing, five minutes before buying the card I had no plans to buy one so soon, all I knew was that it was a really nice Mantle rookie card and if I was going to pursue baseball HOF rc's, may as well start with one of the best.

So what ended up being a very impulsive purchase that I overpaid for at the time has turned out to be one of the best buys of my hobby career, almost nine years later.

So here it be in all its glory:

This is from a Mantle board game published by Garner called "Big League All Stars," or something like that. It came with a couple of pieces and people have broken up the game to sell them individually. These playing cards are cool but I believe they are too large for PSA to grade. I've never looked in to SGC. They aren't terribly rare but the color and design are great. Cool item.

Just bad lighting in my apartment. Angled shots work best at the moment.

I'm always on the lookout for extra Mantle cards. And I don't care what they look like if the price is right. Recent pick-ups:
1953 Bowman color #44 the Standard Catalog says the NM "value" is $775 I paid $15 or 1.9% book.
1957 Topps #407 the Standard Catalog says the NM "value" $465 this card cost me $14 or 3% book.

and the card that i probably shoveled 3 driveways to pay for to get signed w/ one of those stubs:

and finally the ball that was signed w/ the other stub and the "classic acrylic ball/card holder" that was the christmas gift that followed shortly there after:

(anyone else remember these things?)

Cool accumulation and how you acquired them. Cool little story.

Still, beautiful pieces of old time cardboard! Nice pick ups!
