View Full Version : PSA and the Hologram?

Am I correct in thinking any newer PSA graded/slabbed card has the "PSA" Hologram?

That is what I understand but recently looking at some of these hologram cards, I am beginning to think maybe I am wrong?

When did PSA start adding the Holograms to their cards and is there any info to distinguish what years any card has been graded in?

Newer graded stuff has the hologram on the front.

Yes, all the newer graded cards have the PSA hologram on the front of the flip. This change was instituted within the past calendar year. This, however, does not guarantee the card was graded in the same time span. You can send any PSA card in for a reholder and it will have both the new holder and new flip, but it will retain the same cert number. It could have been graded 2 years ago or 20, as long as it passes a once over to confirm the assigned grade is still within reason it gets reholdered with the new pair.

Theoretically, yes, you can pinpoint when a card was graded by the cert number, and to some extent to style of the flip.

Thanks guys.

That makes a lot of sense now seeing that the card I posted above is graded a 4.

Imo, and based on what I have seen since joining, that card, if it was sent in raw nowadays, would be lucky to get a 1.5 or 2?

And just in the last couple of months, they've added a barcode with the number to the back of the label, so you can see the cert # while loading images into your online photo albums on their site.

So the card you graded was this year. The hologram is on the front, and the cert # is on the back. That's just a terrible grade for that card. Both top corners have spider creases, and then the whole top of the card looks like it has a crease, but is probably a shadow. Surface is also pretty scraped up. I would have guessed a 2.

It was holdered this year not necessarily graded this year. Any card they reholder will get the new hologram/barcode label.

No, it was graded (or re-graded) this year, as the Cert # is from the 25XXXXX series, which my cards are also from. Here is another PSA 4(MK) from my group:

Corners show edge wear, but not the creasing that the card in the OP does.

Wow!

I never would have guessed the card I posted was a recent graded card.

But, like what has been mentioned here numerous times, there are a lot of variables, such as the grader, the mood of the grader, the time of the day, etc, etc, etc.
I was going to send my cards in, or I was at least thinking about it, but I have been told, based on reviews of peeps looking at my cards/scans, that it likely isn't worth it as they didn't think my cards would grade any higher than a 2 with some, (very few) getting a 3.

I am no grader, obviously, but based on that one I posted, I would say, if mine were graded by the same guy on the same day, some of mine "should" at least get a 5 or 6 and maybe a rare few receiving 7's?

Anyways, I appreciate the info about the grading time frames. That is the purpose of this post, but I also learned, even more so, to judge the card not the slab/grade it comes in.

Irv,
Yours look more on the 3.5-5 level IMO, even currently, presuming the backs are better than 90/10 centering. And I would say the Mays and Jackie cards are worth grading no matter what.

That was more like I was thinking as well, but thought higher, based on that card I posted and others I have seen that have also been recently/newly graded.

I also want to send in my Mantle, but, like I have mentioned a few times, I am leery about sending them through the mail and not to thrilled about the price/cost of getting them graded.

I am not sure the total cost for those 3 cards, and although it is likely money in the bank or money well spent, I still don't think it will be cheap?

I don't think you need the Mantle graded, because it is definitely a POOR 1. And the people buying it will be able to see it in person, most likely. And I think the minimum cost to grade a '52 Mantle is $700.

The other ones are most likely worth it.

That is what I believe as well. I am just afraid, based on what PSA determines my Mays and Robinson are worth, will also charge me $700.00 a piece for those too?

I do a have few others that I'd like, despite what they grade at, to get slabbed as well.

My Nuxall, Minoso, Pee Wee Reese, Leo Durocher, to name a few.

If PSA upgrades you to $700 a card because your graded cards are now worth $10K, isn't that a worthy tradeoff? ;-)

That is what I mentioned above but it is still a lot of money, especially in my wife's eyes. LOL.

Is $10,000 the threshold where the $700 dollar fee kicks in?
Guess I should read up more.

Thanks, Swarmee. :)

I can't see either of my cards, (maybe a very slight chance with my Mays?) being worth $10,000 so that changes things for me and my thoughts about getting them graded.

How is the card I posted above a 4 and this one a PR 1?

Has PSA slacked off on their grading stringency as this is an older slab, or is likely due to what has already been discussed as far as reasons go?

The Klippstein is a 1 POOR because of the staple holes in it. Any hole in a card (not originally manufactured that way) gets a 1. It's in their definition of Poor.

Thanks, Swarmee. Those were hard to see even after you pointed them out.
I read the vague description and since there was no mention of them it never even crossed my mind to look for them.

Wondering if the current crop of bidders see them?

swarmee

They probably see them, but think that the eye appeal of that card beats some others. The staple holes do blend into the black border line, I first noticed it by looking at the back and seeing the paper loss on the left side.

You have a sharp eye, Swarmee! I looked that card over, what I thought was thoroughly before I posted it, looking for a sign as to why it was a 1 but I just couldn't see it.

I was amazed/stunned it received a 1 and that card I posted earlier was a 4. lol.
