View Full Version : Next best Honus Wagner Card

Do not have a Honus card in my collection and obviously wont be owning the T206 anytime soon. Would love thoughts on what people think is the second best card to own of the Flying Dutchman.

Thank you!

I'm going to answer the question I want to answer, which is "What is the best Honus Wagner card other than the T206?" This is not his second best card in my opinion but his best card. http://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball/1916-d381-fleischmann-bakery-honus-wagner-with-rare-coupon-sgc-30-good-2-highest-graded-example-/a/7116-79008.s

For me, it's pretty much a toss-up between the E90-2 and E95.

Value wise the E107 has gotta be up there, but for affordable cards the E95 Wagner is a great looking card IMO.

E92 (throwing). Just look at that awesome background.

Edited to add: But if you like portraits, I have to agree with the E90-2 suggestion above.

Toss-up for me. The M110 was kinda spendy but it's high on my list. The PC796 is gnarly and was relatively affordable.

All great options. Truly, there are no "bad" Honus Wagner cards. :) Here are a couple other options to consider.

M116 - Blue or Pastel are nice portraits
http://www.collectorfocus.com/images/show/DeanH4/pre-war/11691/1910-11-m116-sporting-life-hans-wagner

E101, E102, etc batting pose is also pretty cool.

I have a 1912 Colgan's Tin Top Honus Wagner SGC 60 in safe deposit box. According to PSA population, they have only graded 1 of this issue - ever, in all grades. Compare that pop to all the T206 Wagner's. The Skydash find had one that SGC graded, and I know of one other SGC graded copy in existence.

No doubt that is a tough issue but I would guess there are multiples more out there. Point being that just about every other Wagner issue is more rare than the T206.

I'm guessing you'd have to combine the total populations of his 20 rarest cards or so (excluding modern manufactured rarities) to add up to the known numbers of his T206 portrait.

With enough money and opportunity the E107 would be my second cab off the rank.

Third choice would the one I decided on, combining scarcity, photographic accuracy, and rare pose....

e105 Mello Mint was my first Wagner , now I have added E95 and E98 since.

You don't see many Mello Wagners.
You can't see mine either since its safely stored and the scan I have is on one of my 6  computers , but not handy or even a quality scan as I recall. I need to rectify that...

Thanks Leon, that means something coming from someone who's owned the cards you have. The E104 definitely does not seem to come up for sale often.

I think I have seen about 3-4 of those in close to 20 yrs of (internet) looking for them....Their scarcity far outweighs their value, relatively speaking. It's not even close....They are probably 15x-20x more rare than a T206 and it's the same pose. IF only half as many people knew about them, as they do the famous one, their value would be more in line with their scarcity. :(

itjclarke
04-18-2016, 03:28 PM
Wow, I knew it was a scarce card, and more so than T206, but didn't know that much. I think PSA has graded 1, and know SGC has graded more, but don't have access to their pop numbers. Prior to bidding, I was able to find history of 4 other previous sales on line, though expect I may have missed some.

The e107 is the card IMO, beautiful card with a beautiful pose of a young Honus...

e107s don't get the love they deserve and this card is a glaring example. This article is SCD yesterday does a good job of pointing this out:

http://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com/breisch-williams-honus-wagner-much-rarer-t206/

If I had the cash I would be all over one as I consider it on of the top 5 cards in the hobby and I would include the e107 Matty as well.
