View Full Version : What is your mega-card aka your collection centerpiece?

These threads are always my favorite, so I thought I would start things off. My centerpiece is my 1969 Topps Mickey Mantle, last name in white. I had first gotten into collecting and this was one of my father's cards. We sent it in to get it graded, only to receive a 4 due to a mark on the back (as well as lack of centering.) Scan doesn't do it justice! Anyways, still one of my favorite cards. Do you have a card/cards that you really enjoy having?

This is an old photo, but my 1953 Topps project. This photo was taken last summer, when I had ~120 cards. I'm now up to 156. My goal is to be at 200 by the end of the year.

WOW, Leon!
As a Boston collector, that is the most beautiful card I have ever seen!
And I wouldn't sell it either.
Thanks for sharing!

While i love most of my cards unequivocally...i consider my miller run my centerpiece...as it encompasses my love for rare cards, type collecting... And is proving to be quite challenging to complete .

I've been a Mets fan since '72 and I'm partial to collecting NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers as my Mom's and Dad's teams, respectively, in the '40s and '50s. Still, Henry's rookie is the one I wanted most when I started getting into vintage cards at about 13 years old (1979). To me it's a perfect baseball card. I got it last year and I can't see parting with it.
My second choice fits the pre-war theme, so I want to post it also. Given what I say above I'm sure it's not surprising that I don't pursue Yankees cards. Still, my collection would be incomplete without Babe Ruth in it because, well, he's Babe Ruth. Of the '33 Goudeys, #181 was always the one I wanted. I can certainly understand that people prefer the action images. I think I always liked old greeny the best because his image fills the card and it came to define how I picture the Babe in my mind. Anyway, here's mine.

Wow, Irv! Those are incredible! Do they have a backstory?
Those 2 and a 104 others were given to me by my Father 20+ yrs ago. He says he vaguely remembers collecting them but says he collected a lot of things back then, namely stamps, coins and Bee Hive hockey cards, so they weren't a high priority to him.
We just got back from our 2nd ever T.O. card expo. Our first was over 20+ yrs ago when he gave me the cards.
It was fun, and just like old times, I looked for BB cards and him, he looked at Bee Hives. :)
I don't think I'm the only one here who really appreciates seeing cards like that raw.
You're welcome :)
Some day they will get graded, but I honestly don't know when that day will be?

These are a few that are important to me.....
After owning a half dozen types of Matty's, I decided the only one that fit my eye was the 1910 W-UNC. Took 3 years to locate an example I could purchase.

I don't really have one "mega-Card" as the centerpiece of my collection but my Zeenut card collection is definitely the Centerpiece of the collection. Hard to scan over 2,700 different cards but here are some highlights...

Some beautiful pieces in here everyone! I'll toss in a bit of a modern piece that I like, due to the number of legends. It is of the James Naismith sport (shame on you NJ!), but I like it nonetheless :D

I'm more of a set collector, so it's harder to pick one card. I look for front/back combos that don't come up too often, and it's fun to take them out and see the result of all the time (way too much :D) that I have put into searching. I took a couple pics when I visited my safe deposit box today.
If I had to pick one card as the centerpiece, it might be my e95 Cobb.

Great cards everyone. Sorry, no scanner, but would be very hard to pick just one. Among the possibilities would be the following:
(1) 1907 Dietsche Fielding Pose Ty Cobb
(2) 1907 Wolverine News Cobb portrait
(3) 1939 V351 Ted Williams
(4) 1939 R303A Ted Williams
(5) 1923 Lections Babe Ruth
(6) 1931-32 Exhibit Ruth
(7) 1953-54 Briggs Willie Mays
(8) 1926-29 Exhibit Postcard back Jimmie Foxx
(9) 1955 Exhibit Postcard Back Mickey Mantle
The history of the game you can hold right in your hands!

Raymond, the colors and the clarity on your 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth are truly at the top of the spectrum---spectacular, bro! A genuine Sultan of Swat home run of a card.
I would list a couple of my own mega-card favorites---but I don't know how to load up an image; my tech support son is sleeping off his shift. Besides, they're POST-WAR-1980 anyway. However, to quote a word from our Leon Luckey, they are most assuredly NOT "pedestrian".:D

Great, tough card of a truly great slugger, Mike. SABR's projections for him have him at 502 lifetime HR's, had he not missed 4 years to the war, and perhaps his lifetime BA could have been around .320 (instead of .313?) as well?
