Hello all, I'm coming to you because the info on this thread is unparalleled! One of my collecting goals is to obtain a card of Shoeless Joe. My present budget doesn't quite allow me to go after it now but I wanted to gather some intel so I can at least start researching, etc. I'm looking for a card that is more standard size. Something that is in a regular size SGC or PSA slab or will fit into one. So oversize cards and postcards need not apply. I typically don't like collecting cards of players issued after their playing days but the 1941 Playball Jackson seems to be accepted as an actual card of him so I will make an exception and include that in the hunt. So here is the ask: I was hoping to get suggestions or a list of cards of his that may fit the bill. sorry to be so picky but if it helps, I'm trying to stay under $1,500.00. Feel free to ping me with questions to narrow potential candidates and I thank you all in advance.

~Bill

Not sure if you would consider a strip card or not, but there's the W514 if you can find one. Not sure what they go for, but guessing you could get a lower-grade one for that amount.

I would say that the Fatima is the most affordable. The big drawback is that it is a team card.

Best bet is the 1919 w-514
Strip.

It's a card from his playing days (sox uni) and his most "infamous" year.

Tough to find..

I think you can get an authentic one for under your budget... Better grades, will get higher. Joe Jackson stuff is always in demand.

Good luck... You'll find one. I was on this search as well and ended up with the card I'm talking about (in my avatar)
Very happy with it...

I'd stay away from all the play ball and post career stuff but that's just my preference.

Thanks!

There is a trimmed M101-4 up on eBay right now that I think will end within your budget (Not my card)

Tom Barker Game. It's a playing day's issue, not a cartoony strip card (nothing against that), and can usually be found be found in mid to high grade.

Here is the mine that I was discussing earlier.
Got it from a great guy on these boards.
They are out there, just be patient!

Nothing against the strip cards, but personally I prefer a game card, Tom baker (or barker) or polo grounds. I like the images better. Good luck. It is a great part of a collection to own a Shoeless Joe!

I just wanted to point out, this exact same card was SOLD previously on PWCC on Feb 7th (60 bids) for $ 1,112.00
Makes you wonder the winner backed out, thinking he got shilled up?

My vote for the most attractive, relatively inexpensive regular size card issued during Joe Jackson's career are his Tom Barker and National Game cards (both issues use same image). And most likely you can find a reasonable copy in your price range. Here is an example (not mine) of the Tom Barker:

+1, but it is an actual photograph and also has Lajoie. On the downside, it is also larger than a standard size (if there is such a thing, apart from modern issues). I would stick with one issued contemporaneously with his playing career, rather than the Play Ball.

Best of luck to you in your hunt,

Larry

Is that an E95 Cobb from Tim Carroll to the left of Joe? If so, that is very cool

I feel like the main HOFs in these sets have really gone up in the past year or so, likely because of getting a "playing days" mint card at a good price point. The Jackson has gone through the roof.

I have been hunting for one sub 1500 for a while and it has been damn near impossible. Seems they are all over the 2500 mark as of late. I missed an ungraded buy it now because of hesitance that sold under a grand early last summer and have been kicking myself since.

Artist is Tim Carroll - he is on the board every now and then and also has a website. He cuts up newer junk-era cards and creates art of vintage cards. Really cool stuff -
