View Full Version : Beware dealing with njdunkin1 on the board.

Just wasted an hour with this guy:

1. I lowered a card on a sales post to XXX. Guy pm'ed me to say he "thinks he'll take it" but can't get the funds 'til tonight and if I can hold it. I said sure send when you're ready.

2. then he wants to see a back scan, i complied and he says looks great he'll talk to his "business partner". then he says he'll only pay in regular paypal that's how he operates and if i will send the card priority mail...

3. i said reg pp is fine if he wants priority it's $5 extra. he comes back with he talked with his partner the card looks great if i'd take $20 less for it now (????). i told him no if he doesn't want it i'll just relist it.

4. next he says well he's buying for a friend the card again looks great but he really can only pay $10 less than what he originally agreed to buy it for....!!! suffice to say the card is back up for sale.

I expected this kind of behavior on Ebay or other kiddie forums but I guess these types are moving onto this board also. I'm gonna block him to be safe but ymmv with this guy, proceed with caution and expect after a deal to be struck he'll come back with 5 other conditions and lowball offers...

What about #2, #3, and #4? And why would you have him hold it if you weren't sure you could afford it? That doesn't sound very good.

Peter_Spaeth
03-30-2016, 03:59 PM
Bad form to try to lowball someone after agreeing to a price subject to being able to afford it especially after he already agreed to eat the PP fee unnecessarily and to ship priority. The court rules in Quan's favor.

Hey Quan, would you take $30 less? :)

pokerplyr80
03-30-2016, 04:05 PM
Why ask someone to hold a card if you weren't sure you could pay for it? If 10 bucks creates an affordability issue perhaps you should save the money for necessities and shouldn't be buying cards at this time.

Whoa whoa whoa, this is way outta bounds. In my initial message I said, as follows: "i think i will take it, may I just have a little bit to get my funds together? i should be ready by tonight." I checked and didn't have as much as I had thought to spend. I was straightforward but used a gentle tone, I thought we had resolved the situation. You could have just PM'ed me and let me know you weren't happy, no need to go and rant to the boards. Gosh, dude. Not cool.

Not a rant on his part, just letting everyone know how you do business. No one is going to have a problem with how he handled it, many will have a problem with how you did. You don't agree to a price and then try to make another deal for a discount. That's not cool. Quan is well respected here, you are unknown to most. Be very careful how you continue with this line of posting. Just a fair warning.

Once you say hold it you've agreed to the price. If money is an issue don't ask someone to take a card off the table. Simple. This is a straightforward transaction, not a home or car purchase.

i would've been completely cool if he told me he couldn't come up with the fund and back out of the deal. i've had a board member back out of a 6k deal after weeks of waiting back in the day. this is totally different after a deal was struck this guy came back and tried to haggle some more, this is not a monetary issue. that's what i want to warn the board about..

Sorry for not showing my sorry face here earlier, got caught up in work. I had not realized the gravity of the mistake I made here, definitely was bigger than I had thought at the time. I apologize to everyone here on this forum, it was not my initial intention to back out of a deal (heck I didn't think I had to agreed to one in the first place. Boy was I wrong.) I will personally send OP an apology message. Please forgive my defensiveness, I don't want this to tarnish my possibility for future deals with anyone here. I will try to work things out with the OP so that amends can be made. And yes, my "business associate" is my little brother :) He and I are in cards together and we like to discuss major purchases before purchase with one another. I tip my hat to the Sherlocks in this thread :D

I'll take the highroad too. Get right with the OP and learn from this.

Also, since you had to talk to your brother about this (you partner), both of you should consider how you did the OP. What if you two were selling the card, and someone did that to you? How would you two respond?

You are young. Lose, learn and move on. Grow from it.

I'm sure we've all made worst mistakes when we were young. I know I did. But just remember this is a relatively small hobby and an even smaller board. If you want to do business here or elsewhere in this hobby in the future you will want to protect your reputation and be honest at all times. It doesn't take much for word to get out that someone is not to be trusted.

Yeah, I actually really enjoyed this thread (except until the end, where I am now pretty full after eating a whole pack of bagels and cream cheese, while looking an my Ben McDonald, Mark Lewis, Gregg Jeffries, Pete Incaviglia, and Steve Avery collection).

Everyone handled this nicely, from the potential buyer apologizing and not getting nasty and defensive; to the seller and others being forgiving; and all who gave good advice to the potential buyer to do the right thing in the future. Great site!

May I know the asking price of the card? May I also know if the card would have been bought by someone else in that time that is was reserved?

I am curious to know if 10 dollars was a large percentage of the price.

I understand the principal of not being wishy washy about your decisions and I abide by that myself, but at the same time I am the type of person that probably would never call someone out for not being able to afford something(large or small) or changing their mind about a deal before money changes hands.

I just recently sold a truck and I had lots of people(10 to 15) tell me they wanted the truck sight unseen and they would come on Saturday to pick it up. I simply replied "First come first serve. It will be for sale until it is sold". Needless to say none of them showed up, except 1 guy who did buy it(without starting it none the less). I wasn't mad or upset at any one of those people that didn't come.

Doesn't that eliminate any downside to having someone "reserve" a card on good faith? Not to bash any seller that does this, but if you change your selling practice, doesn't that eliminate any agnst from your end of a botched deal?

You simply haven't sold it yet, no matter what anyone says and you have no reason to turn anyone else away from a potential sale.

I remember being similarly enthralled by the college stats on the back of the Monty Farriss card from the same series.

I think I had a couple 100 count lots that eventually made the dumpster during one move or another.

30 HR's and 114 RBI's in 242 AB's at Oklahoma State his junior season.

I run into crates of late eighties and early nineties cards on sale at flea markets on a regular basis. It amazes me that Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Upper Deck and Score were able to flood the market so completely that an entire generation of baseball cards are worth so little.

I think the previous generation spoiled us. I mean they had The Mick, Say Hey Willie, Hammerin Hank, Ernie Banks and more!! The cards that those guys graced were paper gold and they stuck them in their bicycle fenders to make cool noises! - Sincerely, The South

It's a thing sort of like a stale donut, but you have to add your own frosting or filling. Unless you get one from a really good shop where it's a donut shaped loaf of bread that you can split in half flatwise, toast it, and add a whole bunch of tasty stuff. There's actually fewer options for stuff to put on it if the shop is REALLY for real. (Do NOT order a roast beef and cheese or it's the street without a bagel for you! )

Just talked to my neighbor the other day and asked her if her son collected baseball cards when he was young. (He is 48)
She handed me a binder full of 90-91 UD hockey cards and she said these were the only cards he ever collected, and the only reason he did, was because a couple of his buddies told him to.

I think that mass buying happened more in those years than any other year if I am not mistaken?

That was right about the time I took interest. I want to say 1989 Score was the set. Bo Jackson, Orel Hersheiser, Nolan Ryan and Jose Canseco were my guys and so was Mike Scott. It was all down hill from there. I think that's why my e obsession with T206 set has remained strong. Because it is original and will never be truly duplicated. One card at a time. No holograms just the folklore.
