I'll kick off the March pickup thread with an original Underwood and Underwood 3 photo pitching sequence of Johnny Vander Meer from June 23rd, 1938 at the Polo Grounds following his back-to-back no-hitters. I love the vintage signage in the background!

Just purchased this today, can't wait to get it in hand. Travis Hafner game used Cleveland Buckeyes jersey. It is signed as well and comes with a COA from the Tigers.

Driving home from Boston, the GF and I stopped at a baseball card shop in Portland, where I found this cool ticket from Joe D's last game.
I don't usually buy tickets, but hey, it goes with my Joe DiMaggio collection. :)

Nice ticket!
BTW, Joe D's last regular season homerun was on September 28, 1951 at NYY. The ticket from the Double Header on 9/28/51 is also for Allie Reynolds' 2nd no hitter in 1951 in case you ever look for it...

Could not believe this was on eBay. It is from 1898 and in remarkable condition with no condition issues to speak of. I do not know if the mirror is original ( I doubt that it is) and I believe that it is missing a piece that somehow affixed the mirror to the base in the shape of a base.

It has been a while since I had a decent vintage pickup, but I've strung a few together recently...

And while not vintage, I was excited to add these two within a couple of weeks of each other. Bobby Murcer's 1983 (final season) Yankees BP jersey, as well as that of the man who replaced him on the 25 man roster.

For Crosley Field Era Reds guy, this is just about as good as it gets. This is a very tough style (home or road) to begin with. Now consider the player. Prior to Frank Robinson showing up in 1956, Klu and McMillan were the fan favorites at Findlay and Western. Because of the way Klu had his sleeves cut, his 1955 gamers (a home and road exist in the hobby), his uniforms are without the "Mr. Red" patch on the left sleeve.

A number of the Redlegs of this period get overlooked or considered "inflated stars" due to the All Star Ballot Box stuffing of 1956 and 1957, but many considered McMillan to be the best infielder in the majors at the time (See Tom Meany article; Collier's Magazine May 27th, 1955).

Roy won the first Gold Glove presented to a major league shortstop in 1957 (only one award per position that year) and then took the NL honors in 1958 and 1959.

Bob,

Thanks and, not surprising, I would have to agree with you.

Clint, I have never seen a legitimate one of these patches off the jersey. There are some modern replicas and some "new old stock patches", but those were never for the jerseys.

I only know of two other McMillan Reds jerseys out there; a 1956 road and a 1958 road. I have also seen Milwaukee Braves and Mets (players and coach) offering as well..

Was able to get 2 vintage photos which were purchased directly from Charles Thomas' estate (the African American catcher made mention of in Ken Burn's Baseball and potentially influential in Rickey's eventual integration) approx. 20 years ago. The first is of the 1901 Zanesville football team, and the 2nd is of the 1903 Ohio Wesleyan team. Both will be for eventual sale

The 1952 Pony League World Series was held at Washington, Pa.
The program is not particularly fancy as it is in black and white; but quite significant because it represents the first Pony League WS.

There were two players on the first Pony World Series championship team that would later play in the big leagues.

Trivia question:

Who was the winning pitcher and the only other player on that 1952 inaugural Pony League World Series Championship team to play in the Major Leagues?

I'll mail the winning pitcher's signed Topps RC to the 1st member correctly answering the trivia question

Duluth Eskimo got the correct answer. I thought Mike White would be a name that would stump net54 members -- but Jason knew the answer right away. (

Below is a team pic showing the eventual '52 Pony WS champs in Washington, Pa. Not sure which one is Mike White (6th from left, maybe). Joe Horlen is about the smallest guy on the team, wearing a warm-up jacket. Immediately after this pic was taken, Horlen tossed a nifty shutout as San Antonio, Tx defeated San Bernardino, Ca for his 1st of 2 wins in the WS.

Rudy Davalos, Jr was also on this team. Eventually, Davalos became a very successful Athletic Director at the Univ. of New Mexico following several coaching stints, including the NBA Spurs.

Pretty excited to add this double sided porcelain flange sign.

The guy I bought it from states "I received it from a friend who was vacationing in the town of Punta Mita Mexico about 7 years ago and noticed the sign on a building. He got permission to remove it and I acquired it from him. He was told that the building was a sporting goods store until about 1935."

Thanks Steve and Mike. Images tell us that these flags were in use prior to the 1938 season. This examples spans the period of 1939-1946 as it would have been current through the 1945 regular season. I suspect these flags may have been replaced annually or maybe every couple of years depending on wear. I am doing to some looking into Wrigley Field photos to see what is the earliest and what is the latest time frame that these flags can be found. Looking for forward to this project as I tend to spend most of my "baseball time" looking at other peoples stuff.

An official All American Girls Professional Baseball League ball made by MacGregor Goldsmith. Unfortunately the side panel stamping with Max Carey's league president signature has worn away. It measures 11 inches in circumference which dates it to 1946-47 when pitching was still largely underhanded. When the league began in 1943, 12 inch balls were used. Gradually the balls were reduced in size until 9 inch baseballs were used during the league's last season in 1954.

Originally a '39 Giants team signed ball, the original owner must have grabbed it in haste when the opportunity to have the Babe sign it, presented itself. Most of the ink from Babe's signature is still left on the ball - presents incredibly well. Even though its not the coveted single-signed OAL sweet spot ball, I'm very happy with it.
