View Full Version : This Mantle Variation is Known About, Right?

I was checking out some 1964 Topps Giants and I saw something interesting. With the amount of time dedicated to discussing all things Mickey Mantle around these parts, I have to assume this variation has already been discovered, but what the heck, I'll post it here anyway in case it somehow slipped through the cracks.

There are two cards pictured in this gif and the most obvious difference between the two is that dark crop line going across the bottom of one of them. It is very evident passing over his left arm. But there are also great differences in the cropping of the photos and the positioning of the decorative baseball.

The card with the dark line is much more easier to find than the version without it.

I also found cropping differences in a few others, including Al Kaline, Ron Hunt and Harmon Killebrew. Does anyone know if there are similarly relevant cropping differences in each of the cards in this set?? These guys don't seem to be discussed too often.

Love these cards. I will need to look to see which Mantle I have. Thanks for posting about this.

Darren ...you have formally joined the Mantle gang :D

Does this thread not violate a New Years resolution ...

Now that I've seen this I will probably spend the rest of the morning sorting through my 64 Giants . Curious to see if any of the SP's have variantsThanks:D ! Yesterday I noticed the same type of cropping variation on a couple of the 1970 / 1971 Topps Supers . Al Kaline from 1971 is cropped with the foul line showing at the bottom right or without line . 1970 Willie Mays shows strip on sleeve near bat and white area below bat is larger . To me it looks like the Mays without the sleeve strip is actually more of a close up .Sorry I'm unable to scan . If possible I will try to get them up later ,Brett

Not one that I was previously aware of but definitely a noticeable distinction. Thank you for sharing. Please don't look for variations on any of his more expensive cards though. :)

Darren,

There's no Brooks Robinson variation is there?!? With the variations of his that you noted in the past I "have to" pick them up since I pretty much have a PC of just his cards.

Love how you have where you have them situated so you can see the marked differences. Thanks so much for staying on top of the variations; it's appreciated.

I find grabs from ebay that are scanned at original size and are 200 dpi or better. Then I go into photoshop and get them as straight as possible and create layers on top of each other. From there I play with the opacity so the top card is pretty see-through, and then I line them up as closely as possible. It takes way too much time, but when the gifs are done, I have them forever, so that makes it worth it.

Like the two different 67 Stand Ups ? :)

Haha, those aren't cards. And, even if they were, I'd find a reason why they shouldn't count so that I wouldn't actually need them to complete my set :)

I don't actually go after the test issues, so fortunately I've avoided those, the Plak variations, and the punch outs.

I do have the two Punchouts, but just one of the Stand Ups and the small nose Plaq. The checklist with him on it may soon be more than his Plaq
