1871 Troy Haymakers Player photo & Scorecard

This Player photo / Scorecard is very rarely seen. It's not the most aesthetically appealing piece; however, it's historical value and scarcity are very significant.

The Troy Haymakers participated in the first professional pennant race of 1869. They joined the first BB professional league (National Association) in 1871.
Their 1871 W-L record was 13-15. In 1872, they improved with a 15-10 W-L record (5th place standing). However, this was their last season due to their
claim of insufficient funding.

The team roster included 12 players. If any one on this forum has any of these Player photo cards of the other players, please post them. I have 2 others
that I will post later in this thread.

Pictured here is William "Clipper" Flynn whose BA = .338 in the 29-game season of 1871.

Pictured here is Brooklyn born Tom York, whose 15-year career BA = .273 (played with 6 different teams, 1871 - 1885).

Nice scorecards, Ted. Here's a later one from 1884 of Boston's John Morrill from a Beaneaters/Quakers game.

Pictured here is Philadelphia born John McMullin. A southpaw, he started pitching for Troy in 1870. In 1871, he was the only starting pitcher on the Troy roster.
His 1871 pitching W - L record was 12 - 15 for Troy.

In 1874, as an Outfielder for the Philadelphia A's, John batted .346 in a 55- game season.

The panoramic of Mickey Mantle at bat at Yankee Stadium brings back fond memories of when I was a kid seeing him hit a tremendous HR.

I have special interest as my mother is from Troy, New York
I was able to purchase this Team Composite from Deacon White's estate several years ago. Sorry for the low resolution scan
It's quite large and present much better
Bottom left is the team's manager and first Jewish player, Lipman Pike a distant relative :)

It's amazing that things are actually the same 145 years later – ADVETISING !!!!!!!!!!!

No different than the Bud Light ads in today's score cards, really.

I would even bet they had the card printed for free, or major discount, by letting Printer ad on front page (just as they do today).

The Beaneaters/Quakers is also great. BUT, a half a page void of ads is unacceptable !!!! :rolleyes:

Here's a colorful Scorecard (circa 1880's).

This particular style of a 19th Century Scorecard is not that rare. There are 4 different designs of this card.
I've been hunting for the other 3 versions to complete this set..

So far, we have 4 of them on display here. If my homework is correct, there were originally 10
Player photo / Scorecards produced (in unknown quantities) featuring 10 different members of
the Troy Haymakers team.
