In the "Theories About the Existence of High Grade Vintage" thread, I mentioned a couple of articles in the early days of Sports Collectors Digest decrying inflation in baseball card prices, one by Dave Meiners in 1974 and a followup by Dave Goldsman in 1976. Of course, we now know that any price inflation the hobby had seen up to that point was nothing compared to what would happen starting a few years later. I thought people might like to see those articles, both for the card price estimates from 1966-76 and as a snapshot of what people in the hobby were concerned about back then, so I photographed them and have posted them below. The Meiners article was in the July 15 and July 31, 1974 SCD, and the Goldsman article was in the June 30, 1976 SCD.

I also photographed Jim Beckett's card price surveys from 1977 and 1978, which were the first really systematic attempt to determine average card prices, and the direct ancestors of today's Beckett empire. I'll post those in a separate post.
