View Full Version : Favorite 2015 Pick-Ups (Year in Review)

A couple threads have been resurrected and started that don't catch the essence of our annual "favorite pick-ups of 2015". Feel free to post your favorite pick-ups of the year regardless of whether it was a goal at start of year, an impulse buy, result of scope change, etc. I'll start with some Goodwin & Co. glass plate negatives that Saco River Auction brought to market this past January.

Here are a couple Stump Weidman negatives that were used to issue the 1887 OJs with Detroit and then modified in 1888 to show his team change (New York).

http://www.net54baseball.com/picture.php?albumid=459&pictureid=19613

I also acquired a couple of 1888 negatives of Bobby Mathews batting which together show the earliest images I'm aware of the Hillerich bat with a stamp that was previously unknown (the negatives have amazing clarity not captured in following scan):

J F HILLERICH & SON
216 FIRST ST.
LOUISVILLE, KY.

And last, but certainly not least, an N173 brown mount of Sam Thompson courtesy a trade with Jay Miller.

Came home from work one day this spring, and my wife pointed me to a small USPS package on the kitchen counter. "Some card you must have won came in the mail today." At first I don't think she believed me as I told her I hadn't bid on/purchased or tried to trade for any cards. Pretty sure the shocked look on my face when I saw the card and read the accompanying letter let her know for sure I had no idea this was on the way.

<a href="http://s150.photobucket.com/user/T206ster/media/Burch_zpstsfhydsd.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s81/T206ster/Burch_zpstsfhydsd.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Burch_zpstsfhydsd.jpg"/></a>

An extremely generous gift from a fellow board member and collector who told me this was one I could scratch off the list of known examples that weren't with the rest, and wished me continued success in rebuilding the collection.

This wasn't the first time this person has helped with my collection. Anonymity is very important to this collector, and I respect that and hope posting this hasn't betrayed that confidence, but getting this card is truly my pickup of the year.

Again, thanks to all who have helped with rebuilding Howe's collection.

First of all, thanks to this board for reintroducing me to the hobby I loved decades ago. I found this place in 2015 and quickly rediscovered my passion for the hobby. Prior to this year, I focused only on cards but now I buy more tickets and type I photos than anything. I especially love the original Conlon images. My favorite 2015 pickup is this Conlon Matty "His favorite photo". I live just outside of Factoryville, Pa. (Matty's birthplace). I've learned so much this past year and I thank all the board members that helped me add to my collection. My 10 year old son made his first pilgrimage to Cooperstown with me this year and is getting the collecting bug himself. Hence the Mike Trout and Claude Giroux autographs on his Christmas wish list!

It was kind of a slow year for me, looking forward to a better 2016....If I had to pick my absolute favorite for the year....wow....I guess the Bridwell MINO, but a close second is the Uzit...or the Oaks...or....I also must say, I think I got all these this year, but it is hard to remember if they were this year or 2014. My memory gets kind of fuzzy sometimes. Also, I want to thank so many of you all for helping me with my collecting goals, and most of all Leon for providing this board to learn, share, and display. It has been an interesting year.

While not baseball, still prewar. A 1910ish St. Paul's School hockey cabinet. St. Paul's was instrumental in the early days of hockey. Some historians believe the first games were played there in the 1880s. The school was known for playing, and beating, many college teams in the beginning of the 1900's. The most notable alumni was Hobey Baker, who the most valuable college hockey player award is named after. If anyone has any additional information on this, I would appreciate hearing what you may know.

Wanted a Jim McCormick for quite a while, so I was really happy to land this one - the fact that it is a Gypsy Queen is makes it even nicer!

Ed, great story on the Howe McCormick Hindu. Derek, that is a special imperial cabinet of Deacon and friends. Wow Kenny & Chris, two fantastic McCormicks, both are special cards!! Couple nice OJ rarities for Kevin as well, well done. 2015 looks to be an impressive year for many 19th century collectors.

With little to no Detroit OJ opportunities over 2015 I decided to expand my scope to include N333 Newsboys. I obtained the Detroit Newsboy a couple years ago from Dan McKee but all the others are new pick-ups this year leaving me two short from having an example from each team (still need Albany Press & Knickerbocker and NY World). Many thanks to Mike Braily x1, Tony Arnold x2, and Bruce Babcock x3 for helping me along. My goal is at least one from each team and as many of the 10 Detroits as possible.

I also benefited from Leon's auction by picking up the three known variants of the Creole pack that may have distributed SF Hess cards. Here is one of the packs.

This was most certainly an interesting find of the year for me. I learned a lot about OJ's and orotone photos.

The orotone photo shown is "Jumbo Davis" (Kansas City) in an unknown OJ pose but , similar to 119-6. The glass photo is backed in genuine gold, which gives it that unique gold foil reflection. This would be only the 4th baseball orotone known to exist.

Denny, Thanks for ye kind words. Yes, it's been a fast start. Sitting at 86 of 119 (maybe JJ some day :o). YES, it certainly was the great help of this board that helped me along. First, Tim N. hooked me up with ~20, at very fair prices. I did some nice trades for my dupe T206 and T210-1. Just can't remember who with :(. Which I apologize, I'd like to publicly thank them, but you know who you are !! Thanks !!! AND, of course, Denny, himself helped me with a few !!!!!!!!!!!! :)

As for as Mr. Speaker. He was a "luck of the Irish" ebay pick up. Must have been on line just as the BIN came up. Won't say what I paid for him, don't want to  any one out. BUT, he did come with some anticipation. Took well over a month to receive. I was afraid someone got to the seller with price. But finally got the "dying Grand mother, pregnant girl friend, bonded out cousin" excuse, and he finally arrived.

I'm waiting on a new "toughie" in the mail (from another generous member). But will wait to crack it out and re scan in pick up section.

When I started collecting in '85, my focus was on Mattingly's, McGwires, and Puckett's. Then my parents bought me a book that contained reprints of vintage cards, and I fell in love with a whole new genre of cards that seemed wholly unattainable as an 8 year old. My favorite card was the '33 Goudey Gehrig. Though I knew it was a reprint, and therefore worthless, I still cherished it, and it was one of the few cards that remained in a hard plastic screw-down case, even as Will Clark rookies were relegated to mere plastic sheets. Anyway, fast forward 28 years, and I re-discovered the hobby and fell in love with vintage all over again. My second vintage purchase was a '33 Gehrig that was actually generously graded an SGC '50. I loved it, but it did not fully fill the void. Finally, this year, I was fortunate to be able to buy an upgrade that gets me excited every time I look at it. My favorite purchase of 2015 and my favorite material possession.

Excellent mix of cardboard beauties everyone. I realize I'm posting more than my fair share, but I wanted to follow-up on my previous mention of a Christmas present to myself . . . an oil painting of Charlie Bennett.

I have been thrilled to have Graig Kreindler work his magic on the most beloved Detroit Wolverine, Charlie Bennett. Charlie was one of two players to play every year of the Wolves existence (1881-1888; Ned Hanlon being the other) and the city was proud to have one of the game’s best in Detroit. During his early years, Charlie would lead the team in most offensive categories and throughout his career lead the whole League in defensive categories, recognized as the best defensive catcher of his time. Charlie’s popularity would extend well beyond his playing days when he returned to Detroit after a train accident took both of his legs and cut his career short (January 10th, 1894). When the Western League Detroit Tigers brought baseball back to Detroit in 1896 the new ball park, by popular vote, would be named Bennett Park. The Tigers would graduate from Western League to American League in 1901 and Bennett Park remained their home through the 1911 season when owner Frank Navin built a new larger stadium with his own namesake. Bennett Park would see some outstanding Tiger teams (1907-1909 AL Champs) and Charlie remained a fixture on the Detroit baseball scene, catching the first pitch of every home opener from 1896 through 1926 (excluding 1898 due to sickness). He was often joined by his close friends and old teammates, Sam Thompson and Lady Baldwin. Bennett would pass November 1926.

The 12”x16” oil painting is based on a portrait of Charlie taken by Tomlinson Studio on April 27th, 1886. The painting was put on hold half-finished for the better part of a year as we tried to confirm the proper colors. Everything was painted in high confidence with possible exception to the “DETROIT” lettering which is likely accurate in red for the “away” 1886 uniform Charlie is wearing. Several references were found and documented on Craig Brown’s “Threads of Our Game” site (fantastic resource for early baseball jersey renditions). Here is the entry for the 1886 Detroit (http://www.threadsofourgame.com/1886-detroit/) uniforms.

The painting is impressive in person; my cell phone camera doesn’t do it justice. I’ve also attached the cabinet photo it is based on.

Thank you Graig Kreindler!

That Gehrig is SICK! (Incredible!) :)

Peace, Mike

WOW! A truly beautiful piece of commissioned art. No doubt Charlie would be proud that a fan had gone to such extraordinary length to honor his memory!

Well done, Joe and Graig!

Erick, your scope has really expanded since you joined several years back looking to complete your D381 run, great to see it. I concur that the Ruth painting looks amazing. How big is it?

Small potatoes compared to what the rest of you landed, but I'm just starting to dip my toes in prewar and I received my first T206 for Christmas.

I really love the color, pose, name.... It was all the more special because I grew up in Rhode Island, hearing about the old Providence Grays.

My monster number is ONE.
