View Full Version : Any unexpected card purchases in 2015?

Like most, I usually have a general list of collecting goals heading into the new year. In looking back on 2015 I realized I have had a few totally unexpected purchases of cards that were nowhere on my radar. I picked up a bunch of post-war cards that I had no inkling of purchasing. This E104-1 Eddie Collins is a card that was really an impulse buy. It was not on my radar at all but when I saw it I just had to buy it. Something just screamed buy me! :) Glad I did because I truly enjoy it. The stamping on the back just adds to the intrigue for me. Anyone else pick up any cards that were nowhere on their radar but glad they pulled the trigger?

This was not even close to being on the radar.
As a predominantly card collector this was very unexpected. I only have a few things re-collected so apologies for showing things more than once (or thrice)....

Just a t206, but unexpectedly came up at ebay as a bargain price BIN so grabbed it probably in the nick of time...

No unusual card buy here, my surprise of the year was a Walt Bond 1960 Cleveland Indians Top, PLUS a perfect pair of stirrups. It came up for auction and just seemed like the kind of thing my collection of the Tribe needed.

My unexpected pickup was a Handsome Harry Bemis E92 Dockman & Sons, which, I believe, missed some color passes. Here is a scan of the card with a standard E92 Bemis scan for comparison.

I tend to collect offbeat, regional and oddball stuff so many of my items are chance discoveries, but these stand out as cards that I had on my want list and happened to find this year:

This one really wasn't on my radar, as I was looking for a green Cobb, but I couldn't afford a NM green one and thought it was a pretty cool card.

Great card Jesse. A very difficult card to find centered with great color like yours. Congrats!

Thanks Dean, the centering isn't perfect but I'm very happy with it over all. I just clicked on your collection and you have some great cards. There wasn't one pre-war card in there I wouldn't love to have. The green Cobb and 33 Gehrig are on a short list of next year's goals for me.

Threw out an early bid on this to watch it, but didn't expect the bid to hold up:
