View Full Version : My T206 back census

Tonight I decided to go through my list of T206s and count how many I have of each back, including factory number variations. I have that info marked on the checklist I use to keep track of them (a copy of Mark Peavey's "The Mysteries of T206"), so it wasn't that hard. This is not the distribution you would get if you took a random census of T206s, because I've made an effort to get tough backs, so they're overrepresented. But I haven't really paid attention to the common backs, and it's interesting to see how their distribution differs in my collection from the scarcity rankings that are out there. Sweet Caporal 350, Factory 25 is listed as the third most common back on T206Resource and T206.org, but they're only tied for 12th most common in my collection, with the same number as Tolstoi and Sovereign 460. Anyway, here are the 31 different backs I have, and the number of each:

Piedmont 350/25: 118
Piedmont 150/25: 53
Sweet Caporal 350/30: 32
Piedmont 460/25: 26
Sweet Caporal 150/30: 17
Polar Bear: 15
El Principe de Gales: 13
Sovereign 350 (Forest Green): 11
Old Mill (Southern League): 11
Old Mill (Base Ball Stars): 9
Sweet Caporal 150/649: 8
Sweet Caporal 350/25: 7
Sweet Caporal 150/25: 7
Sweet Caporal 460/30: 7
Sweet Caporal 460/42overprint: 7
Tolstoi: 7
Sovereign 460: 7
Cycle 350: 6
Sovereign 150: 4
American Beauty 350 (frame): 4
Sweet Caporal 460/25: 4

Thanks David for the interesting snapshot. You've motivated me to do the same. Although I don't have the a Lennox, Broadleaf or Carolina Brights backs yet, I will pass on my findings to you for comparison. Leave it to us T206 enthusiast to always come up with different to sort our little pieces of art.

Nice info Dave! I wish some other people would post their results as well. I would post mine, but my collection is so heavily focused on the 150-350 series that the results wouldn't be very useful.

Tony, that's awesome. You've obviously focused almost exclusively on non-Piedmont/SC cards, and I'm drooling with envy at what you've got. My approach to collecting the Monster has been a little different. I've been working on the set of different fronts (currently up to 353!), while trying to pick up tougher backs when I see them at a reasonable price, all with an eye for bargains, because my budget is limited. All but nine of the T206s in my tally above are raw, and there are only a few (no more than half a dozen, if that) for which I paid more than $100 (and only one for which I paid more than $200). I have a strong preference for good eye appeal, so I have a lot of cards with inconspicuous creases or other minor flaws that would knock down their technical grade, but which look very nice at first glance (and usually at second glance). Kind of a middle ground between those who collect beater sets and those who collect only mid-to-high grade cards, though I do have quite a few that would probably grade a 5 or better if I ever got them graded.

I've always "guesstimated" that SC30 to SC25 ratio was about 5:1.

Jeff's shows 350 at about 3:1, and 150 at 7:1.

I have absolutely nothing to do this afternoon, so I'll tabulate my backs (and I'm totally void of those pesky tough ones )

Well, that didn't take to long.

Here you go:

Piedmont 350 -- 206
Piedmont 150 -- 98
Sweet Cap. 350 / 30 -- 87
Piedmont 460 -- 49
Sweet Cap. 150 / 30 -- 16
Sweet Cap. 350 / 25 -- 10
Sweet Cap. 460 / 30 -- 8
Sweet Cap. 150 / 25 -- 7
Sweet Cap. 460 / 42 os -- 6
Sweet Cap. 150 / 649 -- 3
Sweet Cap. 460 / 25 -- 3
Sweet Cap. 460 / 42 -- 2

Old Mill So. Lg. -- 24
Polar Bear -- 2

The SC150 30 to 25 ratio is about 2:1, which is arguably about right.
Although, the SC350 30 to 25 ratio is almost 9:1, which is probably high.

Basically nothing new or revolutionary.*

However, I feel, even though SC 350/25 backs are common, they are quite rarer than other accepted common backs.

* but, fun, as always :)
