Is a News Service photo a type 1 photo? (I forget) Or is the seller mistaking?

Yes. News service is just referencing a news agency (i.e associated press, world wide photo,...)

By the way the person selling that photo is a very knowledgeable collector

Yes, a news service photograph can absolutely be a "Type 1" but will depend on the specific photo. In other words, that it is a news service photo does not preclude it from "Type 1" status.

I am no expert but there appears general confusion of terminology - esp. fairly often a tendency to use the term "news service" and "wire" interchangeably. A "wire" photo cannot by definition be a Type 1 photo even though it is also a news service photo. Equally, I regularly see what appear to be bone fide Type 1 news agency photos wrongly labelled as "wire" by sellers.

I agree! Most sellers who arent knowledgeable about photo classification use the term "wire photo" even though the photo is clearly a press photo. Dont know why that is

A news service is just a news company such as Associated Press or United Press. A news service made original, later generations, etc. So saying something is a news service photo doesn't itself say if it's type I, II, II or IV. It could be any one of those.

Some call them news service photos, others call then news photos or press photos-- they're all basically interchangable.

A wirephoto is a specific type of photo made through telephone (wire) lines. As they're copies by through the telephone lines, the are by definition not Type I. Though they are usually vintage to the date of the image subject.
