Time to kickoff the new month of new cardboard additions. Here are a few of mine that just arrived. Very pleased with the 69 Pete Rose as it looks under-graded to me.

The card isn't totally new, but the sig is... just signed at Waukesha Sports Cards. Hank's sig is aging a bit, but still like the way it looks, and very glad to get it while he's still signing.

Yes indeed Bill! They were super nice btw. I'm sure they had loads of mail ins like mine, but still took time to talk with me the 3-4 times I called. I had never mailed anything of similar value to be signed, so I was a bit nervous. I mailed it in a box with a fresh sharpie, 3-4 pics showing where I wanted it, blah blah blah.. And they, he did everything I asked.

The final player card I needed for my 56T Brooklyn Dodgers team set--just need the team card now.

Am not a big spender so it took all year to find a "good enough" specimen that worked with my wallet.

Y'all have been good sports about indulging my occasional oddities, and I've been a good sport about NOT posting every new Isaac Newton card I find. But here is one I really love from a French chocolatier.

Not sure of exact date...one source said 1888, but I could see it as anywhere up to about 1910. Not easy to see from the pic, but the graphics are embossed, which I love, and I'm also a sucker for gold borders.

Nice cards. The good thing about 56's is that with the oversize design and color pop that most of them have, you can find a bunch of cards that still display great in VG-ish condition. Personally I'm suspicious of most cards that old without at least a little patina on them. :)

Thanks, John. Yeah, some sets still display well even in Vg-VGEX condition. '56 Topps is one of those sets. I also really like '53 Bowman Color but won't collect it because the prices I am willing to pay would result in cards that IMHO just don't display well.

Wow that Banks has incredible eye-appeal. Love that Bench as well. Some great cards as usual this month!

Here's my addition. I had previously owned 2 '54 Topps Gray Back Jackie Robinson cards in the past, and sold them off - and very much regretted doing so. Wasn't sure when I'd see one again at a reasonable price (707 has a PSA6ST for $2500). Thankfully, Heritage failed to indicate in the auction title or description that the '54 Topps was actually the MUCH tougher Gray Back version. The picture pack card (highest graded) was an added bonus.

Robert - that 56T Mantle is a really great looking card. Definitely would not look out of place in a higher grade!

Here are a couple recent additions. First I'm a sucker now for centered Mantles. Already have a psa 5.5, but this one looks darn near as good and better centered. 53 Bowman I believe may be the most undervalued Mantle there is just comparing the numbers on the pop report...

http://www.collectorfocus.com/images/show/MichaelF/mickey-mantle-pc/34291/mickey-mantle-1953-bowman-color-59

Also I finally got outside my comfort zone and bought something other than Mantle. I am leaning towards either starting a Maris run, or dappling in the rookie category. Haven't decided yet Maris may be better for my wallet though...

Hi gang,

I don't post very frequently because I don't buy cards for my collection all that often, normally just around Christmas and my birthday. But I had to pull the trigger on this '59 Willie for the price. Although the corners may make it a tad worse than advertised, (EX) it was still a deal for the money. No creases and decent centering. Trying to rebuild a collection right now of some older cards I had as a kid - and although I actually started out looking for a '63 Mays #300, this is what I wound-up with. :)

Yeah, I think some of that may be an auto-improvement from the scanner - the borders and color on the actual card look a little bit dull to me, but it's certainly not a showstopper. I paid $35 for the card. I have a '58 Aaron PSA 4 that this will look nice next to...:)

Hello Everyone,

I just picked up this 1957 Kahn's Wiener Clemente. Don't know much about it. One question I have is why some refer to it as a rookie card when Clemente is obviously featured in the 1955 and 56 Topps issues?

Best regards,

Joe

Technically not a November pickup, but since I don't post much...

Always thought this was a neat looking '56. The action shot I believe is from the '53 World Series - catcher is Yogi Berra. :)

Joe, I contacted someone who was selling this very card and billing it as an RC^2 (Roberto Clemente Rookie Card). I asked him what gave it that distinction and his response was that it was Clemente's first Kahn's card--the 55/56 sets being Reds only.

I suppose it's the same rationale as the 52T Mantle. Definitely, I will still continue to think of the 55T Clemente as the "real" RC, but I suspect this seller's response matches the thinking of others who attach the RC designation to the 57 Kahns.

That's quite a stretch.

Agree. Just because a particular card manufacturer wasn't active yet when a player was a rookie does not make all their first issue cards rookie cards. Is a '49 Leaf Joe DiMaggio his "rookie" Leaf card? Nonsense.

jason.1969
11-12-2015, 10:19 AM
I agree. I wasn't endorsing the viewpoint but merely sharing it.

In the case of Clemente, it feels particular odd to me given that Topps is Topps and Kahn's Wieners is...Kahn's Wieners. Now were things reversed and Clemente had a 54 Kahn's Wieners but only a 55 Topps, I would definitely endorse the 54 as his true Rookie and the 55 Topps as his "major issue" RC.

Moving over to Mantle for a bit, that's kind of a tweener in that Bowman really was a major release, just not Topps. Still, I am in the camp that does not at all consider the 52T Mantle an RC. It's a spectacular card and a significant one to be sure, but to paraphrase Stan Lee, "1952 Topps Mickey Mantle...nuff said." I don't think it needs the RC label to underscore its prominence in the hobby.

Not exactly a card but figured people on this side of the board may appreciate it a little more. The large image of Mantle was cut from a Jello advertising poster (the smaller image is a reproduction of what the entire poster once looked like) and then signed by Mantle. As a bonus, I discovered a Moose Skowron autograph on the back of it when I received it. By far one of my favorite pickups in a really long time and cannot wait to hang it in the future.

It took a while to find the time to get it all together but I think it turned out pretty sharp. I like the color contrast of the cards verses the black background.

At long last, my 1956 Topps Dodgers set is complete. I was adamant about not spending a ton on the Team Card, so I lowered my standards from VG-EX and bought a Fair that at least looks decent from far away.

Will work on my display in the next week or so and post when it's done.

Nice card Dean, that's one that's on my bucket list. I have a feeling it will remain too expensive for me in the shape I would like to have it in, however. '53 Topps are all miniature works of art - and most of them still present well in mid- to lower grade condition because they were printed on such thick cardboard stock. My only beef with the set is the Jackie Robinson card. I just don't think the painting looks like him - and have seen posted elsewhere that others agree. Luckily for the majority of the players - including Willie - the artists nailed it. Congrats!

11-18-2015, 04:01 PM
Thanks John! What I also like about the '53's is the card stock. It has a sort of a canvas looking texture to it and when added to the pictures it really gives it an artwork feel. Good luck on hunting down your treasures!

Still have to figure out exactly how to put it together but got my stuff all ready. I worked hard to stay within a very low budget while aiming for good centering, no creases, and decent corners. I think I blew it on Amoros and Loes but am amazed I did this well on the other guys.

That's a man who loved the game and changed it forever. Any guesses what the NL HR record was for shortstops before Banks?

I am biased as a Cubs fan, but Ernie was a special kind of guy, I can only imagine what his cards would be worth today if he had played in New York. Not sure about HR records before him, but I know the typical shortstop was thought of more like Reese or Rizzuto. Great defensively, and maybe a decent hitter but not so much for pop in the bat. Wagner for career HR, maybe? I think Ernie had 270 some HR's at short before he moved over to first base in 1961. (He had a stint in the outfield in '61 too). Supposedly he had an eye-problem, depth perception I believe where he started slinging balls into the stands from short. Also pretty amazing if you consider of those on the all-time great list - 500 HR club, etc. - Ernie is one of the few who did that with significant time at different positions. He never won an MVP at First Base, but did play 5 All Star games there.

Am guessing Arky Vaughan had the record but will try to figure it out. MLB record was Vern Stephens.

jason.1969
11-20-2015, 03:38 PM
Was evidently wrong about Vaughan, who had 19 HR...
"When Banks hit 44 homers in 1955, he DOUBLED the NL record for shortstops, previously held by Glenn Wright (22 in 1930). From 1955-60, Banks averaged 41 homers, 116 RBI, and a .294 average each year. Other starting NL shortstops in that period averaged 7-46-.260."

It's been an amazing month for me - I was so happy to pick up the 1954 Topps Gray Back Robinson, and just got these back from PSA on Friday. These two cards are arguably the two toughest / most difficult to obtain in the entire set, with only the Throwing variation rivaling them.

Now that I have two of each, I'm not sure which of the two I'm gonna sell - my previous 2 which stem from a long-time Dodgers collector, or these two. Will have a listing in the BST section later this week.

Both cards are from the same person - who happened to be the original owner of the cards - having obtained them when she was a young girl in the 40s. I can't believe the condition that they are in - the grades do not represent their eye-appeal.

Below is my favorite card in the set - an iconic image of Jackie, and the black and white makes it the most appealing of all his "RCs". He was actually wearing a Montreal hat at the time of the photograph, which was edited for this set to show him in a Dodgers hat.

PSA 5 - Highest Graded 1 of 3 in this grade

http://www.collectorfocus.com/images/show/charleybrown/jackie-robinson-bond-bread-set-of-13/34930/jackie-robinson-bond-bread-portrait-glove-in-air

The photo for the card below was actually shot in a stadium, though the background was taken out for this card - perhaps to avoid having other company's advertisements on the card? Of the 7 total cards graded / known, I've owned 3 of them :)

PSA 4 - 3 graded higher.

Shaun,
Too bad they didn't cross equally, but you seem thrilled regardless. Thought they would have ended higher. Perhaps the zero fb scared some away. Great cards! Congrats

Thanks Richard. I was hoping they would cross equally, but tbh - I was just happy to see that everything checked out. The glove in air card could be a 7 though imo. I will likely send them back in to see if I can get a bump.

I was shocked at the hammer price - particularly on the glove in air card - the last PSA3 to sell individually went for $7700 - I don't recall there ever being anything higher than a PSA3 being sold individually on the open market.

The zero fb definitely had something to do with the hammer price - it's always a risk, but I felt comfortable after exchanging emails with the seller - and I do have to say, the story of these two particular cards and what they represented to the original owner really adds to their allure.

Here are a couple I needed for my upcoming "Top 100" display. The good news is I only need about 30 more cards. The bad news is that two of them are Ruth and Gehrig!

Lower grade, but I didn't spend more than I wanted to and it still displays very nicely. I've always thought this is an iconic looking Robby card. He was nearing the end of the road in '55, but must have been a tremendous clubhouse presence still to help push Brooklyn to that first and only World Series title over the Yankees. :)

Love it! As we have all just been blessed with Bond Bread postings, I'll qualify my remark and simply say 1955 is the BEST Robinson card out there aside from his Bond RCs.

Thanks Jason. I've been aware of the '55 card since I was a kid and saw it in the movie "Mask" with Cher and Eric Stolz, hanging on Rocky's Dodger wall in a ziplock bag. :) I've had several different copies over the years, all of which eventually got traded or sold. I intend to keep this one.

Those years are my favorites. '57 is the most difficult probably, because even if you find nice (in my mind, EX or better) cards, they often have snow and all kinds of printing problems that the '55 and '56's don't seem to have. But a nice '57 with rich color and a picture free from those printing problems is indeed a thing of beauty.

You are after my own heart with this card. :) I've been a Cubs fan since I was 12. My favorite Santo is his '63 Topps, although I have his '61 rookie card too. Just always liked that set. Also love his '63 Fleer - if you will notice carefully the picture was taken at the Polo Grounds - when the Mets played there before it was torn down.

Wow. When I mean nice I'm thinking PSA 5 or 6. :) I once had a really nice copy of card #42 (Dee Fondy of the Cubs) that I sent off to SGC for grading. It came back a 8. I can't imagine a nicer '57 than that one raw when I held it in my hands, so those must be really nice in person.

Friends,

I'm pushing the era limits of our sub-forum, but I just had to share what is really one of the most gorgeous cards in my collection. As you compare to your own PSA 8+ cards, you may be scratching your head, but it will make sense if you imagine yourself a guy whose cards typically have such rounded corners that you could roll the card like a wheel (okay, maybe not quite that bad!)

I know this set is a bit cartoony for some collectors, but I am actually a big fan. I think the artwork really captures the era. This will be a great companion to the other HOF Diamond Stars in my collection: Hornsby, Ott, and Hubbell. Someday I hope to add Pie Traynor as well.

Wow! I just love this one! And a P.S. for the historians out there...did the Polo Grounds scoreboard really list the home team first?

Awesome card! Not one that I am aware of having seen before personally. I've always loved the art-deco look of the Diamond Stars cards - they're not so much cartoony - that style was just very popular back in the day. I will always remember Bill Terry because of how Ted Williams talked about idolizing him as a young player because he had hit .400. And as for condition - well, let's just say Jason you are making me feel a lot better about my own collection. :) Great stuff!

Haven't posted any of my pickups in a great while, but making an exception here... After a year of near-misses and escalating prices, I finally bit the bullet. Key for me is pretty nice centering and no roller marks. The other flaws are forgivable. I can't stop staring at it.

Not exactly on par with some of the awesome cards being trotted out lately, but I picked up my second decently-centered '72 Mays 'In Action' this month and the Gibson isn't in what you would call great shape (rounded corners with staple holes at bottom), but a really tough 1962 HOF high number? I'll take it any day of the week!!!!!!!

Darren, some nice pickups. No question it is hard to find centered 72's of Willie in action. No doubt a great price on the Gibson. I have a Johnny Bench "In Action" on the way that has pretty good centering. I have been looking for a long time to find one and can't wait to get it in hand.

It's funny. Topps seemingly released 8 billion cards in 1972, so the Quality Control Department never had any time to ensure anything left the factory centered, especially Willie Mays, Johnny Bench and Hank Aaron "In Action" cards.

Okay, I might not have the most impressive November pickup, but I may well have the last November pickup!

Some of you may know I've decided to expand my "Top 50" display to "Top 100." This took me from needing only two cards (Ruth, Gehrig!) to needing 34! Well, the good news was that many of the ones I needed could be had in decent shape for very little. And the bad news is that I still need the Ruth and Gehrig!
