Ah yes. White Castle's rat burgers give the term "sliders" a whole new, and rather disgusting, meaning.

Lummis Peanut Butter/Sealtest Printers Proof cards.

The only two of these that were actually issued are the Rowe and the Seminick. Given the inclusion of Pennock, these were likely produced some time in 1947 or very early 1948. The sets were not released until 1949. All of the cards are different sizes, as if they were trying to find which one would work best for their needs. Not just the overall size of the proofs, but also the interior images are of different sizes.

These are so interesting as the names and the borders along the images are both raised. Just incredibly interesting stuff.

I have to think that the Pennock is his last image on a card before he passed away.

I will be making these available shortly in the BST.

Extremely happy to pick up this new addition to my signed T206 collection. Long gone are the days of paying a few hundred bucks for one of these. I've never seen another Red Murray autographed T206 -- and, frankly, didn't know that this one even existed until a fellow Net54'er alerted me to last night's Hunt auction. With this addition, I now have 39 different T206 poses autographed (not including Matty and McGraw signed by their widows).

Congrats Paul on landing a new one. I watched that lot with great interest, and was both surprised (but not shocked) at the strong ending price. There are obviously at least a couple others pursuing these new examples of signed T206 cards that pop up from time to time. I always liked Red Murray and that's a great looking signature, I bet it feels good to get a new pose to add to your collection :)

Ok so technically they are a late September pick up but I didn't get a chance to post in the September thread...

Usually all I have to share in the pre-war pick up threads are some low grade Cardinals & Browns cards (which I love!!). This time I have something a little more exciting to share! Picked up this group of 3 T206 including a Starr with Drum back. For me the find of a lifetime! I also understand the Lundgren is a somewhat tougher front/back combo too.

Amazing find indeed on that Drum back!! Congratulations.

On the Lundgren EPDG, the tough one is the Chicago Lundgren, not the KC one.

On the Lundgren EPDG, the tough one is the Chicago Lundgren, not the KC one.

While the Chicago one is typically understood as the rarer variation, the KC one is not an easy common either. That's a great card -- overshadowed entirely by the Drum -- -- but a great card nonetheless!

1.) Sid Cohen (Tough Card!)
2.) Wally Berger (1st Ever Card of future Major League star)
3.) Dolph Camilli (1st Ever Card)
4.) Howard Burkett (Jesse Burkett's son, it is said his biggest regret in life is that Howard never made it in the Majors--apparently he couldn't hit the curveball!)

Well, after about ten years in the wilderness, not exactly like John the Baptist, and minus a London house and a wife, I, John Spencer, have returned to the US, where I am now living in Stuart, Fl on the East Coast. And what better way to start building a new life than to re-embrace my first true obsession - old baseball cards. The first order of business was to form, out of the ashes of Full Count (some might remember that fine old firm,) a new LLC, Past Ball Vintage Cards, and the second was to join this august forum. Leon and I go back away.
In keeping with the thread, although my pick up was September, I was thrilled to get in Leon's auction both E92 Harry Davis Croft Candy Red and Blue. Wow.
Nice to be back. Yoda

The hardest thing for me was determining an appropriate bidding price point given the recent demand and the fact that this might be a one-of-one. I bowed out late, too -- and then got angry and put in one more bid and won it. Phew.

Hope to have these and a bunch more in hand within the next 10 days to two weeks. MOST of them will be available for sale. I will also be putting some up to a major auction house in the very near future.

This was the Profiles In History Glass Plate Negatives lot from their last auction. Lots of nice stuff including 17 Babe Ruths, 4 Walter Johnson, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, 3 Christy Mathewsons (one signing a baseball!!!), Frank Baker, etc.

You can certainly inquire about pricing. Many are known to be Bain photos.

That Gehrig photo really shocks me.

Not only is it incredible, but in a time where weight training was incomprehensible and most of the players lifted nothing but beers and lit cigars (talking to svelte Ruth there, lol) that guy is a bear compared to everyone.

There's no such thing as a "Chicago on shirt- Hands on Knees" Tinker variation...I think you're thinking of the Mordecai Brown version.

Hey Leon,

I like your Kroger Bread card - Not sure if I have seen any of the others that you mentioned although it seems I vaguely remember something about them (probably from an old post of yours)? :)

My question: Do the other three known have the "hole" in them (probably from where they were tied to a bag)?

Thanks, Dean and Mike. That little bit of crease in the lower right knocked it down to a two, which made it really affordable. I do concur. They will be on thin stock (like regular W501's), grainy images (like regular W501's) and no "G-4-22" nor number at top. I think W501-2 is a much better description for the set than to lump them along with regular W575-1's.

Rhett, thanks for your confirmation. Yes, these 3 cards are on thin stock like regular W501s (which I now refer to as W501-1s). A very interesting aspect of these 3 cards is that someone, presumably whomever owned them before the eBay seller, wrote a number in pencil in the upper-right-hand corner of each card. This is exactly where the printed card number appears on a W501-1 card, AND the penciled numbers on these 3 cards are the correct printed card numbers that appear on the W501-1 cards of these 3 players; so, apparently, a prior owner did make the connection between these cards and the numbered W501-1s.

Mac Dice- I knew it was scarce and not sure how it didn't get thrown in with the catalog sale stuff. Glad to keep it.

This M116 ad cut/? did the boomerang back too...happy it did also.

Two Goudey upgrades. They might not look like much, but 8 years into working on the set, they are significant to me. :D:D:D

The Myer SGC 92 is the highest graded with only 5 SGC 84s. There have been only 6 PSA 8s graded. My set now stands at 187/240 SGC 88 or better.

The Moore SGC 84 is the highest graded with only 1 SGC 80 below it. There have only been 6 PSA 8s graded. It is off centered for sure, but it was the last card I needed to have my set all SGC 84 or better, except my SGC 82 Lajoie.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Quick OT: Leach Cross fought under that assumed name so his family and friends didn't know he was engaged in such a sport. Also interesting is the Bio. on the back of T218, were most of his fights were 5-15 rounds. On the East Coast (mainly NY and PA), fights had round limits, probably to appease the "anti-fighting" crowd. California (Colma), however, was wide open, no limits (but, I believe, around this time, set a limit of 45). There is a classic (imo) photo of "Fighting" Dick Hyland standing over the downed Cross. Cross looks exactly like he does in the cards shown above (even down to the perfect hair part), except he is horizontal !!!

Gott'a love that they misspelled Pugilist on the T226 !!!!!!!!!

Thanks Scott, it is always exciting to land one of the big cards, no matter the condition. Never say never, you just have to get creative. PayPal Credit allowed me to grab the Demmit. 6 months no interest, I pay just a little over a $125 a month and it makes it much easier. I picked up my O'hara from a board member who was incredibly generous in setting up a payment plan. You never know, be patient and something might just fall in your lap.

Justin,

Just an update. I hope your winning lot was undergraded. I was happy to find that when the McGraw arrived there wasn't a little white spot on the left side of the card on his face, so I photoshopped the card to reflect what the card is that I received. I was too lazy to try with my supposed "smart" phone. Before and after:

The death of my scanner has left me heartbroken as I look for something decent that scans graded cards. I am now left with an annoying HP that makes my graded cards look like I scanned through a tub of Vaseline. So anything graded gets the Iphone treatment...sorry guys.

Here's 3 T206 I could not live without this month.

One off my big dogs list (which really looks great...not even a micro-crease I can find. This one is getting broke out in hopes of a slight upgrade) and 2 for my printing collection (both Pied if you are wondering). I wish I could get a nice scan of the Hoffman because the color shift looks like a purposeful artist shadow. It's darn pretty...
