Inspired by the Kris Bryant superfractor pull thread. Anyone ever had a great pull that never was? What I mean is, an incredible pull at the time that you held onto just long enough for the player to tank.

Here's my story: in 1999 I was 14 and bought a box of UD Ovation retail packs from the local K Mart. I pulled a signed bat card of Ben Grieve numbered out of 25. He had just won ROY. At the time Beckett listed the card, along with the Kerry Wood companion NL card, for $1,200.

I eventually sold it for $25 a decade later.

I once bought ONE pack of '95(?) UD Hockey Be a Player; and I pulled a signed Wayne Gretzky. The owner's jaw dropped, and he offered me $900 for it on the spot, or TRADE me for a nice OPC rookie.

I think I would be lucky to get $130 for it now. Lol.
That's ok, I still have it, and it remains one of my personal favorites, even though I don't really collect hockey very much these days.

I never had any luck pulling big hits from packs. In the early 90's I pulled a UD Chrome Mickey Mantle redemption card that was good for some set if you sent it in. The card was around $200 back then and now can be had for $5 on eBay.

I bought a pack of '94 Donruss back in the day and actually pulled a Donruss Elite Tony Gwynn and thought it was the bee's knees. It was worth around $50 at the time, now it's probably $5. It was always a dream to pull one of them and it happened. I still have it.

I remember opening tons of packs in the early 90s and hoping for one of those Donruss elites but it never happened. A few months ago I had bought one of those chase for the mantle type boxes with old packs. I finally pulled the elite, a Rickey Henderson. It's probably worth the same $5, but is a cool looking card.

I was in a Genovese drug store in Brooklyn back in 1990, when I found a rack pack that had the Maas showing.

I was almost as amped that day as when I pulled a Gregg Jefferies out of an 88D pack in a buddy's basement. Those were the days.

Pulled an ultra all rookie shaq 92-93 in the cvs parking lot with my dad when I was 10. Also won fifty for him on a scratch ticket. He let me buy more packs.

I recently picked up some $10-20 boxes and one was a 1994 Donruss. One of the better boxes I have ever had, with regard to beating stated odds. I pulled an Olerud Elite card about half way through the rip and was pretty happy. Not sure I remember ever pulling one, even thought it was in the "easier to pull" time frame of 1994 wax, as opposed to 91-92.

I then pulled a 2nd Elite card a few packs later and this is probably the only time you'll hear someone complain or be disappointed when pulling an Elite, but out came ANOTHER Olerud in the same box!!

Man I bought zero cards in the 1990s..no 'pull' experience..but it sure sounded like fun..i sold all of my 1983-1988 topps to a dealer in like 1989 and wondered if I would of regretted it later ...I only got back into the hobby last year and the first thing I did was check on the value of what I sold..

now I realize I only was checking on the 'value' of what I sold..almost all worthless.....I am already questioning why am I back in the hobby....
