I don't usually dabble in football, but I've recently been trying to fill in the checklists of various sets printed in the Chicago Tribune, now that their archives are online. While doing that, I figured if they did scrapbook series for the Cubs and White Sox, they probably did something similar for the other Chicago teams. As a result, here is the checklist for the Bears set they printed in 1977. It ran for 23 days, and the first issue starts here with Walter Payton and Doug Buffone.

Nice, love this stuff. I wish more of it were available, but then again, if that were true, maybe they would not be as cool.

Vince Evans would be a cool one to find, aside from the most obvious Payton.

Although not a card, the Bruce Sutter HOF rookie appears in the 1976 Chicago Tribune set, one year earlier than his Topps rookie card.

Any idea when those were actually issued? I browsed around in the 1976 archives and couldn't find any.

Jason:

I had picked up the whole set on e-bay at one time but sold it long ago. I don't have any dates or anything now. Sorry.......

Based on the checklist, I'm pretty sure the set listed for 1976 is actually the 1977 set. Pete Broberg, Gene Clines, Bobby Darwin, Ivan DeJesus, Greg Gross and Steve Ontiveros weren't with the Cubs in 1976, and Herman Franks wasn't the manager in 1976. I sent all of my information to Beckett last week, referencing my blog posts and the Tribune Archive, so hopefully they will clean up their listings, unless these are just more of their "copy protection" oriented inaccurate listings.

Jason:

Found an old scan of my Sutter, it shows complete stats through the 1976 season so it had to be issued either between October, 1976 - December, 1976 or else it was a 1977 issue, which is more likely.

Yeah, that's from 1977.

So I guess no '76 Sutter exists, making the '77 Topps his true rookie.

I just ran across this thanks to Derek Granger sending me the link after I told him I had the entire newspaper from the Sutter issue. It was printed on June 26, 1977. It's definitely not from 1976 as shown in the pic.
