1980 topps prototype coins

I just came across this, a graded Silver Jackson coin final price $ 2,133 in a Huggins and Scott auction. Now there are a total of 13 known coins of a possible 27

Jackson 3 gold 2 bronze from topps archive plus 1 silver = 6 known Coins at this time of Jackson compared to the 1977 Orioles Jackson Proof of 8 known cards

Ron--how did you arrive at the 27 figure ? Would that mean you think there were 9 sets produced ? SCD lists them as existing in gold, silver and bronze colors, do you think there are 3 of each. SCD also says some have holes in them, maybe for a chain. Any info on whether such holes were part of the production process for some of the coins, or made post production by 3d parties who acquired them ? Have you come across anything indicating who Topps used to produce them ?

I think I mentioned to you that several years ago that I bought a gold colored Jackson on ebay and the seller then offered me a full set of what look to me like tarnished bronze colored ones. After I got those I relinquished the Jackson to another collector who has since picked up either a Carew or Garvey, can not remember which

Just a theory Jackson Carew Garvey 3 gold 3 silver 3 bronze = 27 and does seem reasonable. The Topps presentation board focused more on the gold and silver coins for the new product. As for SCD the info provided was good at one time but not now. As for production Odd ball issues other then cards seem to be made in China, Thailand, Taiwan the coins could have been struck here or overseas. Since 1980 only 13 coins have surfaced no packaging to this date .I assume there would have been Presentation board for the packaging. Also at that time topps had to contend with Fleer and Donruss in 1981 and maybe thats why the coins might have fell to the wayside or not economical to produce

Just speculation was topps going to use the coins as a stand alone product to sell separate from the cards or include these with factory sets or like the cards in bronze silver or aluminum in the mid 80's
