i needed this card for my set, however i do not bid in probstein auctions any longer for somewhat obvious reasons, but thank goodness!

i put the over/under @ $7200 and was shocked to see this card rake in $17k+

that's one expensive label!

That's just horribly dumb. I can usually give someone the benefit of the doubt for over-paying on a beautiful card but this is just overboard.

What I would like to know is how it got a 10? The non-linear cut on the upper right corner (from the front), the wear on the lower left corner (from the back), and the registry is a bit off (yellow is shifted up). If PSA is doing half grades, this should be a 9.5 at best (IMO).

But I guess that's why I don't by graded cards. Or at least graded cards in this condition.

We all know the mantra re buying the card and not the holder.

For a PSA 10, that card sure has a lot of problems. The ink is out of registration, it's a bit dull, and there's chipping along two sides. It's a butt ugly 10.

looks like an 8 to me

But the sticker affixed by some random guy says it's a 10! So it must be the best! LOL.

My money goes to the centered 9.......or better yet the 7!

EDIT 2 ADD----- I would rather pay a fatty fat premium over average price for a top top 9 or below than pay whatever the avg is for any 10.

+++++++1! I can see 10's going for 5-6, maybe even 10 times an eight, but these guys are paying 90% of the purchase price for a piece of plastic and paper slip!! How dumb does dumb get?

Sincerely,

Larry

I think they got a bargain!! If Dean's Cards had this same card, it would be listed for $122,750.

I need one for my set. But not that badly.

I would take a 52 Topps Mantle in lesser condition for the money. Crazy how the tag is king to some... To each their own, even if I think it is nuts!

What could you buy yourself at the National or a big regional show with 17K?

GEM-MT 10: Gem Mint
A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card. Attributes include four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus and full original gloss. A PSA Gem Mint 10 card must be free of staining of any kind, but an allowance may be made for a slight printing imperfection, if it doesn't impair the overall appeal of the card. The image must be centered on the card within a tolerance not to exceed approximately 55/45 to 60/40 percent on the front, and 75/25 percent on the reverse.

The grading for a GEM-MT 10 is pretty lenient. Slight printing imperfection, 60-40 centering on the front and 75-25 centering on the back. You only have sharp corners once, and that seems to be the key for the virtually " perfect " card. Waste of cash for the Ryan, imo.

I have 6-8 of them in EXMT to NRMT. Those will do. But, as an earlier poster said, to each his own. I would ALWAYS rather have a Mantle rookie in 3-3.5 although those are getting pricier now. Congrats to the 'winner'

The whole "10" thing is a part of the hobby I just can't understand. ( I guess I understand it, I don't subscribe to it ) I get paying a couple thousand for say a Rose rookie as a seven as opposed to buying a $300 rose rookie vg. That I do understand. I just feel that once you get to an eight, I mean that's a great looking card. paying the price of a car just to have a label say 10 isn't for me, but that's what makes the hobby great ( not being sarcastic ) everyone has different ideas and buying patterns.

i will buy and pay for a 10 when it is deemed by my eye a 10. but don't get me wrong, i will never drop nearly 18K for a non rook 1978 card. i would rather have the mantle as well!

i "try and" keep pop report records quarterly on key cards like this and will post this just so we can see the influx of 9's that end up getting reviewed or cracked and resubbed:

9/14 - pop 66, 0 higher
1/15 - pop 75, 1 higher
3/15 - pop 80, 1 higher
4/15 - pop 79, 2 higher*

* so we know that this was simply a review of a current 9....

w/ an $17K+ price tag, i anticipate a ton of activity to take place in the next couple of months....similar to what happened to the 79 rose 10's, if anyone knows what i am referring to there that happened the last half of last year....

4 different bidders in at over $10K each. Wish I had that kind of extra cash to toss around like that!!
