Allow me to kick off April with these two cards...

The first is the 78 Brett. One of my favorite close up shots in all of Post War cards. I have owned so many of this card since I was a kid, and this is the cleanest copy I ever have come across. The borders and his face are totally free of the PD that usually plagues the card, plus the centering is there.

Next up is a nice and square #660 Aaron Mini; the card is so often diamond cut. Not to mention OC. Found this squared up beauty for around twenty bucks on eBay!

Nice pickups Matt, perfect centering on the Aaron. Congrats!

Yet another one for the HOF RC Collection! Slight diamond cut, but it's pretty for a 1.5. I like the fact that the border is not completely shifted over to the right like we often see. On to the next HOF RC.... :)

An outstanding looking Aaron rookie for a PSA 1.5. Wow!

Matt, those are a couple of nice looking 70's to start off the month of April. I just picked up a 75 Aaron a week ago that is off to PSA as we speak. Both the Brett and Aaron are about as good as it gets with the centering. Congrats.

Was not happy with centering but still a good card for my 1952 high numbers.

Am now up to 14 out of 24 with my 1956 Topps Dodgers team set. Goal has been pretty good centering and corners, with this card being a tad nicer than most of my others.

Am planning a fun display in honor of the 60th anniversary of Brooklyn's first and only world championship.

Yes!! An artist friend of mine is Dodgerizing Hoak, Russ Meyer, and Frank Kellert for my '55 World Champs display. Her tougher job will be "1956-izing" George Shuba, who isn't in the set at all.

although a football card and kinda sophomoric, I landed one of my white whales a few days ago and just got her. she's a pop 2 and not sure if psa still grades this card. anyways, this was one of those tough error cards I was in to growing up, even though it's not really an error card, just perfectly time/placed shot!

(kinda pissed at my scanner. it's resolution is too good!! as this scan makes it look like all sorts of imperfections in this card, I can assure you this card is gorgeous in hand)

I've been chipping away at the 1960 Leaf baseball set for a couple of years now. The high numbers (73-144) are TOUGH! At our local monthly show yesterday I stopped by my my favorite dealers table and I saw this beauty on display. I don't even remember ever seeing this card? Anyway I bought a big stack of '50s and '60s non sports cards along with this 1960 Leaf card for $25 total. So I would guess this card cost me $3 or $4 max. I took a peak at the price guide when I got home, to find out this is one of the most expensive cards included in the hi numbers (only #125 Sparky Anderson and the last card in the set #144 Jim Bunning book higher). It's a cool card!

Nice pick-up Larry. I've always thought that if the 1960 Leaf set had been done in color, it would be a lot more popular than it is. Regardless, I think it's a nice set. Good luck with it!

Damn bro, I was just talking about adding a 53T Maysand another Goudey Ruth to the collection and there they are. Stunning pick ups.

I had some time to burn on an international flit so grabbed a Mays of my own. Thought this would pair really nicely with my 52T Mick. They almost seem separated at birth.

Greg,

When you showed me that Mays yesterday I told ya: grab that before I do! What a great card. How often do you see a 52T Mays that centered?

The Ryan also. To think you can put that beauty in your wall case for $70-- and see how it looks from 6" to a foot away! Gorgeous. Another one where you can see fifty examples, and none will be as centered as the one you found there.

That 52B Mick is safe and sound and will be heading your way soon.

The 53T Mick-- still can't believe you out-sniped me on that one!

Aaron has some great cards. The 62 is one I haven't admired nearly enough. The 67 is pretty sweet, too. Also love the 75 HL card and the 64 HR card, off the cuff. Been cruising eBay a lot this month. The 56 is astounding and among the best centering I've seen on the card.

Also snagged these two guys who went for way cheap. I think the 54B will be insane in hand with that anomalous centering. I had already bought the other 51B Berra the other day, but it's so infrequent that nice lower grade ones surface and I love the charming portrait, so went for it.

Got 'em at the monthly Twin Cities (Mpls./St. Paul) area show.

The '71 Clemente (along with a '71 Lyle and '71 Powell and '69 Ted Williams that are just as nice) were brought by one dealer when I mentioned to him last month about how close I was to finishing those sets. He took down the card numbers that I needed, and he had them set aside for me when I got there today. :)

The '68 Ryan does have a couple of surface scratches on the front (one next to the R in Rookie and one going into the purple ball), but it's all about the centering on that card. It will look nice in my raw 1968 set binder though. ;)

Two more Mantles in the mail today.

A '53 Bowman and a Manny Baseball Land 8 X 10 photo of unknown date, probably from the late '50s or early '60s. Kind of disappointed in the '53. The white marks to the right of his head are on the card, the rest are from the photo. Should have looked at it on the 'puter screen and not the phone. Might have noticed it then.

Bestdj777
04-13-2015, 04:16 PM
Nice pickups Mike. The Manny's photo isn't one I've seen before and the 53 Bowman looks great. If you are concerned with the white spots, you can always go over them with a ball point pen like the previous owners of many of my cards have done. They are hard to see though and it looks very sharp.

MattyC
04-13-2015, 07:46 PM
That 53B Mick is real sharp and those white/cream dots are not uncommon for the card. Worthy of the grade no doubt and presents really nicely.

Found this money looking Raines hiding out on eBay.

Also, just got these other ones delivered today and was able to do some proper clear scans at the office, so please do excuse the double images!
Always happy when cards in hand surpass expectations from the listing scans.

I am really becoming a huge fan of what I guess could be called "phantom" creases, and by that to say creases or wrinkles that appear only in certain, harsh light. This #144 Ruth, for example, loses almost all its creases when viewed in normal light in hand! It's really wild. Then under harsh light of course all its blemishes come out, but I always view my cards under normal light conditions. Can save bundles. My 1933 Goudey Gehrig has the same phenomenon; under harsh light, a vertical wrinkle/crease right down his torso; but in hand in normal light, the crease/wrinkle is completely gone!

Nice Hank Allen!

MattyC

Somehow Ole Hank was never able to capture the magic of his brief 1966 sampling, in which he rapped out a .387 avg and .441 OBP in 35 ABs. His 53Ks in 292 ABs the following year did not bode well for him.

ValKehl
04-15-2015, 12:57 PM
Matt, I don't think strike outs was the reason that Hank Allen didn't have much of a MLB career. His 53Ks in 1967 was 17.2% of his plate appearances, and for his MLB entire career, Hank struck out in only 13.6% of his PAs (PAs are more meaningful than ABs, IMHO). FYI, supposed phenom Bryce Harper has struck out in 21.8% of his PAs thus far in his career, including 40% of his PAs in his first 8 games of 2015!

Another Mantle. It's not as centered as I would like (yes, I've caught MattC-itis :D), but it's got great color. I suppose some, looking at you Chris :p, might suggest I trim the left side to even out the borders (that would also take care of the soft top left corner).

Haha, I am just trying to help you get nice, centered examples without any color loss :) If I showed you what had been done to improve some of the cards in my collection--not by me as I don't alter cards--you'd laugh. A previous owner kindly cut the center circle out of the 59 Topps to get rid of the pesky, and likely off-center borders. Another owner add a few additional notations/reminders that Mantle was on the Yankees. A couple of owners added a little bit of writing to personalize their cards. Finally, a couple added some great pin holes to make it easier to display these beauties.

Aw Mike, don't get hung up on centering-itis. Don't get me wrong; I like dos guys, but they just so obsess over the frame that I feel sometimes they lose sight of the precious part of the card---the photograph.

Look pal, I cannot ever recall seeing a nicer picture of Mick on a '53 Topps than yours; the picture registry (painting registry ?*!) is a 10, as crisp and sharp as can be. You even have the dreaded bottom left corner with nothing to dread over; it's all red and all there. Hooray for you! Come on, if you so much as slit it to even up the borders, the red would probably chip off in chunks. You'd be bangin' your head against the wall in major self-recrimination.

Though I know you were just kiddin' about taking a razor to it to even up the borders, I couldn't resist setting the stage of doom.

It may be slightly off-center, but the card has everything else going for it to such an extent that were it centered, you'd of had to pay so much more for it it's not funny. And, somebody else probably would of beat ya to it. Or, the seller never would have offered it and kept it as a prized gem for himself.

Feel very good, bro. "Ya done good, Maynard."

Take care, Mike. Enjoy that great Mantle. It's a killer where it counts the most. I know, I'm repeating myself.:o It's 3:07 in the morning and I'm very tired. Time to shut up and get some shut-eye. --Brian Powell

Okay; I swear I am done for April. No more $. Next buys come at Heritage in May.

Always loved the pure smile on Hank in the 74. That's an expression seldom seen in the adult world. The card has such flavor, but it seems to surface either OC/tilted, or it's a MINT 9-- and man how I loathe paying for high grade! So seeing this one on an eBay cruise last night was a thrill.

The Banks was just hanging out on ebay with like 30 watchers, and the price was so right, there was the desired sliver of space above the name, with centering...it was only a matter of time before someone sacked up and hit the BIN! We've all had those listings where we like a card, watch it, really are a hair from pulling the trigger-- then one day you hop on eBay and it says 'ENDED.' Then we go, 'Man, what a schmuck I am. Why didn't I just hit the BIN?' I hate that feeling.

Great pickups from baseball's greatest generation! Very rare to see that much white above Banks' name. Usually the cut of the card touches the lettering, from what I've seen.

And that Aaron to me is maybe the second most iconic Topps card behind 52 Mantle. The fact that perfectly presentable copies can be had under $20 makes me think it's one of the most underpriced as well.

MattyC
04-16-2015, 09:12 AM
I agree; I mean that crown they designed is so fresh-- they even put it on a tilt, which is a great stylistic touch.

I further agree with you on the economics of that card. Seems crazy (at least to me) to ever pay for a 10 or 9 of that card when a gorgeous 8,7,6, and below costs a mere fraction. So many cards like that in the hobby. I also liked a higher-grade Banks that was running well over 10x what this little one cost. I thought, 'No way does the more expensive one present $4k better than this little guy. I'll take the 3 and the cash for more cards, thanks!'

I agree with you Brian, I do like the color on the Mantle. That's why I got it despite the centering.

Now in regards to:

They announced the office closing this past Wednesday, so I could be on card probation for a while. So, I am glad I got the 56 set finished this week. Larsen came in the mail today. 34 HOFers in the set I have 33 of them graded. I will get Giles, just waiting for the right price.

This started in early August and I got a ton of help from Steve Wilk, Brian Horne and a few others. It has been a true labor of love and has overtaken 59 and 67 as my favorite. I have to upgrade Giles, Checklist 1/3, Tigers, Hodges, and Martin but it is solid all the way through

and then there's this one. another whale for me, as there hasn't been one of these posted in a long, long time! she was on ebay for all of about 8 minutes when i ran across her. i am still waiting on an original with decent eye appeal. there was one listed about a year back asking crazy money and it was a complete eye sore, both card and autograph wise. i do have the 91 national version, however it doesn't have the original back and reluctantly picked her up solely because i thought i'd never run across a decent original or the 83 topps version.

i was a little skeptical that the card would show considering how low the bin price was (dirt cheap, imo). even in the "a" holder, it's only a pop 4, 2 higher. so, with all that considering the time i have been looking, the price, the rarity, the fact she actually showed up, i am pleased to pick up and present the official topps reprint...still in awe that i picked this one up and my 53 in the same week.

Here's one that gets really slept on and needs more hobby love: a 1959 card that memorializes one of the most famous moments in the history of the game. I realized that when I take my son through the collection, and he meets the players and learns of them, this great moment should definitely be in there. It's also a toughie to find centered. I went shopping for this one and went down the line of VCP past sales in its grade, and couldn't find one as centered going all the way back to 2013.

The first panel is so iconic-- an image I somehow knew of even as a kid growing up in the 80s. And the hat falling off in the second panel is just mad flavor.

Matty, love that 1951 Berra. In the late 80s my Dad bought me a whole bunch of reprint cards, and this was one of them. I think he knew I loved baseball cards and this was a way of seeing those old cards of his that got thrown away. For whatever reason that 51 Bowman was "the card" for me, even over the 52 Mantle reprint which sounds crazy. I love the hat on his head, and especially the grandstand sign in the back. The artwork on that card is crazy.

As a devout Christian family, we went to weekly Saturday evening vigil. My sister told me "it wil go by quicker if you think of something else" so I used to think about my cards, and especially that 51 Bowman Berra. I always said I was going to get one when I was all grown up. Heading over to ebay shortly.

Matt a definite +1 on the Mays catch card. That is one of the games if I could go back in time and watch I would put that one towards the top.

Also that 70's Aaron was a sweet pickup. I almost pulled the trigger on that one as I contemplated and went back it was gone.

Thanks for the reminder on the Berra card. I remember seeing a near perfect centered one a while back and did not pull the trigger. Kicking myself for passing on that one. You continue to lead the way. Well done!!!

Furillo was my grandfather's favorite. His cards have much personality. Must be thrilling to make such a big upgrade.

Congrats on two huge cards for a collection in the 53 Mays and the Hank Crown! Both are so clean. The Mays is legendarily tough.

picked up 2 more aaron rooks and my first clemente rook. all 3 low grade, but I have been overly picky on picking up a clemente. have been looking for a while and finally found one I think I can be happy with!!

hopefully, they show before may comes around, as I like using my own scans, which brings me to my question:

what's the consensus definition of a "pick up"?

the day you paid for the card....

or

the day it arrives and can be posted?

Hi everyone-this is my first post here.

I got back into cards last year, totally as a bucket list item. I always wanted to have every set from the 70's. When I first started collecting as a kid in 1978 finding older 70's vintage cards was always cool, although I never ran into anything older than 1970, except for the 3 1968s that I have.

My April pickups include a huge lot of 1972s and all but 15 cards from the 1974 Topps set. With that, I now have on average 94% of every set from 1970-1979. Most of what's left is the remaining highs and high HOFers. Now the fun really begins :D

Welcome aboard and whenever convenient throw up some pix! It's a great and positive group here.

I feel like the older I get the more I appreciate and am in flat out awe of Hank Aaron. Consistency at that high level is so amazing. Great thing about the game is there are so many wonderful players with compelling personal stories to get into and collect. And let me edit and add in that Hank's second-year cards are shockingly affordable! I remember the Bowman '55 as a kid-- something about his pose and the upwards look just is so simple and peaceful. Rockwellian. Those Bowman cards, from 51 to 55, are just so freaking cool. Tremendous personality in each of those sets, for their own reasons.

nice pick ups matty! currently working on my aaron basic set. don't have the 71 yet, but did pick up the 55b a few months back. such an iconic card framed w/ the wood grain "color tv". reminds me of back to the future when marty sees the "honeymooners rerun" and although, I wasn't even thought of in '55, just imagine how cool it musta been to see "color tv". had to be pretty big considering it's the only invention that I can think of to frame a card.

just down right classic in every aspect!

and side note: other than perhaps berra, I agree that just about all of hank aaron cards seem to be waaaaaay undervalued...but don't tell anyone. still picking up all the centered ones i can beat you to!

MattyC
04-25-2015, 11:35 AM
Berra is another sleeper legend-- if those two words can even go together. I mean the man had several seasons with more HR than K's! And with power. Plus it's not like old Yogi played in a small market-- though I can see how he was somewhat standing next to the sun in terms of the star wattage of his stud teammates.

Just saw this one on eBay and had to grab it. Was priced high for an 8 but still just a fraction of the 9s. Ran through the recent 8s on VCP and they all had worse centering and most had white dots, and this one didn't, so figured why not? Also, if I ever needed to sell it for crack, it seems like the kind of card that could wind up with a higher sticker on it if re-subbed a few more times.

alrighty, so here's that 1st aaron. still fathoms me that you can pick up the natural home run kings rook in decent condition for $800 and on a good day much less...and a 52 mantle (non-rook) will run ya $10K+ for anything w. decent eye appeal. undervalued, indeed.

So what's the story on that Johnson variation?

The overwhelming majority of these cards have "Alex was traded to Cardinals, October 27, 1965." appearing on the lower back. The earliest ones released by Topps in 1966 did not have this information included there and are incredibly tough to find at a reasonable price.

DanP-- more great eye cards. Palmer is tuff.

MattyC: the 55 Aaron is amazing. Screams 8 from here. Hardly see that card centered.

Lots of Aaron sightings 'round these parts. Nice 58.

And I agree Aaron's 2nd yr issues are tragically undervalued. Something tells me that won't be the case for too long.

You have indulged my occasional non-card posting, so here is a mag I just added to my Aaron collection. Admittedly my main reason for buying it was to solve the mystery of why the Hammer (about to get hit by a ball) would front a 1963 World Series preview mag when his team finished in sixth place, 15 games back. Well, I never found my answer, though a funny Aaron quote makes it into a feature on Berra: "Yogi is so cool you would think he was playing in a sandlot game."

I bought the card, not the holder. There's an ever slight pen mark on the white part of the right side of the card, which bothers me only in the slightest bit. The front shows very well, with sharp and deep colors and just about 60/40 centering. The back is clean and centered the same. Lets just say that I got this for about the price of a PSA 1.5 so I'll take it!

The first will replace my 1964 Tommie Aaron in my Hank Aaron "Top 50" display case. And the second was essentially a throw-in from the seller. Was an effort to find a nice Aaron without the print marks present across so many 1975s.

Clemente came today. I had to sign for it. I don't lie or hide things from my wife but it is better for her health and blood pressure if we can avoid the "how much did that cost" conversation. I had the cash put away in anticipation of finding the right one - so no harm, no foul. I only say this to justify working from home so I could monitor the mail truck and meet the mail lady at the door.

Since 2:30 today, I have been to the safe 4 different times to take it out and look at it. It feels like Christmas morning. I can only imagine what it will be like when I finally get back to #311 or one of the Ruth's!

I don't know if it is only because I have been actively shopping but it felt like the 6's really spiked lately. Now that I have one on hand, the price will go back down. There was a really nice 4 in REA that went for 1700 plus BP. It might have just been an undergraded anomaly.

Jason,
That is really cool seeing them all together.

Couple of things I noticed - I knew tha that the 61 and 70 AS cards were similar but it is really interesting seeing them virtually side by side. I will need to get my binders out to check if there are any other players that had both a '61 and a '70 beside Hank (can't remember if Mays had a '70 AS card).

Aaron didn't have a '69 AS card. I have the set, but since I bought it complete versus card by card, it hadn't really registered that he was not in that issue. Again, I will need to get the binder out to find out who the NL outfielders were - but I know that Aaron went to the AS game - he just might not have started.

Hank is my favorite player of all time. When I was 10, I sent him a letter. He sent me back an 8x10, an index card, and a Babe Ruth reprint with his signature. I also have the big Steiner picture of him hitting 715 off of Downing (signed), an Aaron/Mays signed picture, and a signed baseball.

Congrats on such a cool display.

Thanks, guys. Am curious which card you'd displace if a 55 Bowman were added. Am thinking the 1961 Nu-Card (since it's a minor issue) or maybe the 1973 Ruth/Aaron/Mays (since Aaron doesn't hold or share top billing).

Cool display of Hanks. Wonder if you gonna go after variations? I noticed the 1958 green one on the top row but i remember a while back there was talks in a thread on a yellow name variation. Saying that folks were using a highlighter to color them in.
You defintely need to get the 55 Bowman. It is nice. What about other card issues? Spic n span, johnston cookies, and i still look for that weird looking Indianaplois Clowns card. I only see one of those. There was a reprint on Ebay i seen of it.

Again, I will need to get the binder out to find out who the NL outfielders were - but I know that Aaron went to the AS game - he just might not have started.

Here is some info on the 1969 All Star selections. Aaron started the game, as did Mays. Topps opted for Brock and Rose though.

Jason - love the Aaron display. A great tribute to a great player.

Also, nice Clemente rookies, guys. That card is on absolute fire right now. An E-bay auction I was watching (purely out of curiosity) of a PSA 8 copy just ended over the weekend north of $25,000. Yikes. I am looking for a low grade one at a reasonable price, but that is becoming an increasingly difficult proposition. I understand that it is an iconic card of a beloved player, but anyone have any thoughts/opinions on why it is currently shooting up like that?
I can recall (not that long ago) that the 55 Clemente and Koufax rookies were basically the same price. No longer the case.

Thanks

Thanks

My opinion on the price increase in the Clemente is that a new generation of ppl are realizing what an amazing human being Roberto was.

Having exited the hobby for 20+ years till just recently, I feel like Paige, Jackie Robinson, and Clemente experienced huge price gains relative to other established superstars. And to state the obvious, none of the three have added to their achievements during this same span.
