I had the pleasure of having the original finders of this newly discovered card come up to my table at this past Philly Show. I believe they found it in a book, maybe even a Bible if I recall.

I know another copy sold a few years ago so it isn't a one of one but what a neat rescue from an old book!

It just goes to show you that there are still treasures out there to be discovered.

It is an amazing card and all I can say is thank goodness I do not collect 19th century stuff :)

I also had the pleasure of having John Mcdaniel (Wonka) sitting with me at the time the card came to the table, thanks for hanging out John!

That kind of stuff freaks me out. Imagine the first guy to offer them $1,000? I would imagine it'd be hard to say no not knowing any better.

Yea I think they paid $5 for the Bible but luckily I had an honest person at my table when they approached...... Wonka!
They had already confronted the Auction House and they sent them over to get an estimate on final value, needless to say I have a feeling they will be pleasantly surprised at final hammer!

Neat card, and don't you start calling me honest Dan I don't need that baggage over my head that puts me at a disadvantage in this hobby.

Being direct I think the sellers will be more disappointed than surprised at the hammer. There were some big numbers being tossed around of 100-150k+ land by some key folks connected to the buyers....and I know they were privately offered a number they may regret not taking come hammer down. I think hanging ones hat on a 6 year old Forbes article about the hobby's most expensive cards that doesn't even list the T206 Plank may be a recipe for disappointment.

The last one was here...

Regardless of speculation or the final hammer at $5 bucks nowhere to go but up for these lucky people, I wish them the best. :)

It was good hanging with you too Dan, you think Scott has recovered from the abuse at the bar he had to take from us. :)

Cheers,

John

I think 100K or more is not unreasonable, though it might go for less. I need to start reading the bible..:(

I predict it will either go for more than 100k or for less. :D

Very sweet! In similar category to the McGreachery OJ that auctioned last spring in REA although I don't think this will fetch near as much (<$100k). Will be fun to watch.

I HATE ever agreeing with Peter, but I think he accurately pegged this one as more or less than $100K, :) Nostradamus probably wishes he was Peter.

What Dan failed to mention is he asked me if he could borrow the $165 after he made the offer. :)

The Follow Up Story from H & S-

Huggins & Scott Proudly Announces an Offering of Biblical Proportions: The Four Base Hits Clarkson "Good Book” Find!

March 24, 2015
Silver Spring, MD

Only 17 cards from the rarefied 1887 Old Judge Four Base Hits set have ever been evaluated by grading services PSA or SGC—and among those, just 8 Hall of Famers. It was long thought that the sole known example of HOFer John Clarkson (ranked #9 on a Forbes list of “world’s most expensive baseball cards”) was a trimmed survivor that was auctioned back in 2003. Not so, as Huggins & Scott Auctions recently discovered at the Philadelphia Sportscard and Baseball Memorabilia Show, when a local couple walked up with an untrimmed Four Base Hits Clarkson that has been graded 20 Fair 1.5 by SGC.

This classic card-collecting fairytale unfolded at an out-of-the-way PA thrift shop where the couple bought a group of used books early last year. Lo and behold, tucked inside a late-1800s bible (for use as a bookmark!), was none other than Clarkson—the 328-game winner and 1963 Cooperstown inductee. Now it is Huggins & Scott’s distinct honor and pleasure to present this elite “Good Book” find in our April 9th auction with a $10,000 starting bid and an estimated value of $50,000-100,000. Bidding begins March 30th.

It's staggering to think someone used a FBH Clarkson as a bookmark. Yikes!

Is it wise to use retirement money to buy a $100,000 baseball card? :)

Kudos to H&S way, way higher than I would have ever thought I owe a few Duke & Duke $1 dollar bets to a few folks.

someone either put in tooooo many zero's and forgot to do a bid retraction, or this is a remarkable price of 80,000
