I wonder if this thread has anything to do with the missing Philadelphia photo?

One normally sends items to a consignment auction house in anticipation that they will sell them. Don't know why else you'd give them your stuff. Sounds more like a mixup/miscommunication than a high crime.

Oh wait I see it says he sent checks to the library. That would support your post.

And I really hope that folks in the hobby don't convienently forget what he did 12 years from now when he's out of prison.

The photos from the Detroit library were consigned through Harwell's attorney, prior to the City of Detroit going bankrupt. The Baltimore photo was sold at their National auction prior to their bankruptcy, I don't recall the Philadelphia photo, but the other photos were included in their auction after the national, which included all of the T200 Fatima premiums, but they were all pulled post bankruptcy.

If ISIS had good material they could pull off a successful auction.

Yep. In this day and age it seems all anyone needs to do is say, "I'm sorry. I'm now a reformed __________(Fill in the blank: shiller, scammer, forger)" and all is forgiven...

well it's better than continuing to lie even after being found guilty I suppose?

Are you knocking your hobby friends for being forgiving, or criminals for reforming?

As long as they are still investigating can they go back to that "gypsy" incident at Lionel Carter's home?

He already tried working for the feds but obstructed justice by tipping off that other paragon of virtue/intelligence John Rogers about an impending search of his home.

No that isn't the photo in question. Not gonna lie I did do a double take today when I read the article Jeff posted and made a few phone calls just to be sure.

The photo in that thread was won by me and came from the collection of the late Tony Carafeil a legitimate collector/consignor.

Cheers,

John

Unfortunate that there is even an article to be discussed. At this point he just needs to go away and pay his penance. Hard to feel sorry for a guy who the available facts indicate that he'd screw you, even if you were his "friend," if that kicked the price up. That's a pretty sorry guy.

What was the gypsy incident?

According to Doug, Lionel Carter's collection was stolen from his home in broad daylight by gypsies, and eventually -- just as Doug had predicted, with remarkable prescience -- was returned completely intact ("dropped off on his doorstep" or something to that effect) and then shortly thereafter consigned to Mastro because Carter was so terrorized by the incident.

Cliffnotes version anyhow.
