Bidding on ebay the last few weeks has been fast and furious for signed 1987 Topps baseball cards. I was wondering if anyone else on this forum is putting together a signed 1987 Topps set?
I am currently +450 cards in. In my bidding haste I have accumulated about 20-30 doubles that I would be willing to trade if there is anyone else on the road to 784.

Thanks!

How will you deal with the Ricky Wright situation?

I have secured Randy Myers (it helps I live in his hometown). In my perception Dick Howser will likely be the most difficult and expensive card in the set. I have yet to see one available in nearly a year of searching.
I am also completing several of the subsets the glossy all-star cards (from rack packs) and the all star rookie cards (from cello packs). The all star rookies seem to be the more difficult of the two.

I also heard that terry Forster of the angels is almost impossible to find.

Howser is tough but out there. I have seen at least 6. I sold one on ebay a few months ago and have one with my complete signed set. Good luck. It is a great set, but obviously very popular with autograph set collectors

How did you land a signed Howser? Any other cards especially difficult to find? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

What's the deal with Ricky Wright?

Cool challenge, by the way. '87 Topps was my first as a youngster

Seems like Ricky Wright may be the new Mike Marshall. Maybe Ricky will cave when people finally offer him a few hundred dollars for his sig.

Howser was around in Spring Training of 1987 so those cards signed, while still tough to find, aren't as rare as you'd expect.

Some of the tougher cards are the aforementioned Ricky Wright and Terry Forster, along with a few Latin guys who played very briefly after the set was issued. Juan Espino is tough, Al Pulido even tougher. Roy Lee Jackson is also hard to find as he was out of baseball when the card was issued and for a long time (maybe still) was unresponsive TTM.

Randy Myers was actually a very willing signer early in his career, which is good for 87T collectors as that was his rookie. He was flaky though, and would only sign current year cards, and dated them all with M/Y. In 1988 he started just signing the number for the month (4 for April for example), I guess because he figured the year was implied due to his self-imposed rules. When he was traded to the Reds, his policy became current year, current TEAM cards only. Now that he's retired, I've heard he signs all years of cards again, but still dates them. I believe at his last paid signing there were certain teams he would not sign. I think it was Orioles cards he wouldn't sign but I don't recall exactly. He is VERY infrequent with his appearances though (usually just FanFests) and does not sign TTM.

From the Traded set, Alan Wiggins is very difficult, as he was a tough in-person signer to begin with and died of AIDS in 1989. He was out of baseball and living a somewhat transient lifestyle by the time that card was issued.

I have an Espino. I have heard that Wiggins was pretty much off the grid when the Traded set came out, one of the reasons I am not even attempting that. A Bill Caudill went for $41 last night on ebay is he a tough signature? I have yet to see a Pulido or a Roy Lee Jackson. I have my eye on a Mel Hall right now (currently in prison) for a decent price. Donnie Moore is another of the deceased players that seems to command a high price.

Caudill doesn't sign TTM so I think he has the perception of being tough. In person, he's pretty good about signing. He's an agent now and works for Scott Boras, so he's always around wherever top amateur talent is showcasing. Think Perfect Game, Under Armour game, Team USA, etc. If you're ever near one of those events, Caudill is likely to be in attendance.

Forgot about old Mel Hall. Yeah, he's in for life if I'm not mistaken, and he was never overly easy to begin with. I can see his cards carrying a decent price tag for set collectors.

Moore died in 1989 and was kind of a surly signer the last couple years after never really getting over the 1986 AL Playoff game that he blew. I think the price of his card is simply from the popularity of the set, his other cards are usually more reasonable, unless it's a late issue 1988 or 1989 card.

I actually have an in-person Pulido that I would be willing to part with. I have a friend whose wife is from Mexico, and he travels there 2-3 times a year for baseball events and games. He went to a Mexican MLB Alumni event a month or two ago that a ton of former MLB players attended and got me a couple of Pulido's 87T signed, along with some other guys who have been MIA for years. If you're interested, PM me with your email address and I can send you a scan.

Thanks. I meant if you had a mexico connection, perhaps there was a chance to get him in the future. I believe Munoz is still quite active down there with baseball. I tried to reach him through a Facebook group, but received no reply. I saw a blogger collector got him through the mail a while back and sounded like he was really a nice guy, but not sure if there are any current addresses floating around for him. Need him for the dodger auto project and the only 2 on ebay in the last 6-12 months are from the same seller and it's a 3x5 for $30 (OBO) and a really cool, but expensive custom for $99 (OBO). I want him, but not at those prices!!

I don't have any cards for him, but he does have a minor league card. If I knew I had a chance to get his signature, I'd track down the card. Probably should get the card anyway.

I'll keep you in mind the next time my friend goes down there. I'm sure he'll be making 2 or 3 trips.

I actually know the guy who makes those custom cards but I don't know that seller. The gentleman who makes those customs is an active online trader that I've dealt with before, and actually got a ton of early Mexican signatures from. The seller is probably someone he trades with. I can try to contact him to see if he has any extras, he usually prints several of the customs when he makes them.

I contacted the guy who made the customs and he had 5 left, so I was able to negotiate for one at a far more reasonable price. As an aside, he knew the seller on eBay and suspects that he obtained that card directly from Munoz himself, as when the guy who made the custom got them signed he gave Noe a bunch of extras. Apparently the seller is an active collector who makes several trips to Mexico and holds signings with the ex-players. PM sent.

I'd love to trade a signed set. I've got Topps sets from 1985, 86, and 87 and the 87 Fleer and 86 Donruss. It's almost all the same players. Would love to chat with someone who has a complete or near complete set of another year. Figuring out a trade would be wonderful.

Wow. Seven returns today. Six are from the 1987 set.

John Stefero (Also signed a checklist)
Floyd Rayford
Luis Salazar
Bob Horner (From a show in St. Louis)
Sammy Stewart (From a show in New York)
Ricky Horton (X2)

Now I'm at 245/792.

Nice progress on your set. I have been considering doing the 1989 Topps set. I have a case of wax boxes and may open enough to make a set or two. I want to send some out plus I already have several. Are there very many difficult to get guys in 89 Topps?

Also would it be wise to send some from like 89 Donruss or Fleer since the checklists may be similar and some guys will sign multiples. I have not worked on any larger sets. I have been working on a 1976 Wonder Bread Football set and I need just a few more signatures to finish it up.

Let me research and I'll be happy to share. Go ahead and send multiples, but be careful not only who signs but how much. Some are one per. Others do multiples. I'll come up with a list for you.

Are there very many difficult to get guys in 89 Topps?

There are quite a few deceased and HOF players but most are relatively inexpensive. The toughest/most expensive HOFer in the set would probably be Randy Johnson, unless you also decide to work on the Traded set which includes Ken Griffey Jr. The tougher guys are going to be the commons that disappeared after their careers, especially those players from foreign countries like the Dominican, Mexico, etc.

Here's a quick run down of the guys that might be challenging and/or costly to acquire:

HOFers-
Randy Johnson
Hank Aaron TBTC (he's very pricey these days)
Gary Carter (has 3 cards in the set (base, All-Star, highlights), and he did not sign cards made after 1984 for free, so anyone who obtained these cards probably did so for their own private collection, which limits the amount that would be available to the public now.)
Kirby Puckett (probably not hard to find per se but may be more expensive than you'd first think since his death was sudden and unexpected)

Deceased players-
Tim Crews
Pascual Perez
Frank Williams
Bo Diaz (passed in Venezuela in 1990, would be very hard to find)
Carmen Castillo (he hated signing)

Toughies-
Fred Manrique
Hipolito Pena
Jim Traber
Mel Hall
Andy Allanson
Johnny Paredes
Mike Diaz
German Jimenez
Jose Cecena
Stan Jefferson
Carlos Quintana
Candy Sierra
German Gonzalez
Wil Tejada
Barry Bonds (even though he's involved in the game again, he's super tough)

Hope that helps.

That list was referring to the post about 1989 Topps. For 87, you are correct. Lopez is extremely tough, Maris impossible and Wright next to impossible.

Sorry Derek, I'll cross reference with 87s

No worries! Here's a quick run-down of toughies (IMO) for '87. As before I may have missed someone or added someone who is no longer considered tough, but you get the gist.

EDIT: Also, Maris TBC was in the '86 set I believe. The impossible TBC in '87 is Clemente.

HOFers-
Gary Carter (base and All-Star)
Kirby Puckett (base and All-Star)

Deceased players-
Dick Howser (died in '87, was around during spring training but that's basically it)
Bo Diaz
Frank Williams
Aurelio Lopez
Donnie Moore
Carmen Castillo
Rod Scurry (tougher than you'd think)

Toughies-
Ricky Wright
Mel Hall (especially if looking for a nice one)
Urbano Lugo
Juan Espino
Al Pulido
Roy Lee Jackson
Randy Myers
Rob Wilfong (I think)
Jackie Gutierrez
Barry Bonds
Andy Allanson
Mike Diaz
Tony Bernazard (base and All-Star)
Terry Forster
Doyle Alexander

A few guys I got in person years ago I have heard are now tough as they don't respond to fan mail. Guys like Brad Havens, Ron Shepherd, Darryl Motley, Jim Traber...I can't verify that as I do little to no TTM.

Just my opinion, but from my experiences with him he didn't like signing. I got him once in about 6 attempts, and from what I know, unless something changed, he's unresponsive TTM. I don't know that I'd put him in the Ricky Wright-tough category but I wouldn't call him easy.

I would appreciate any help! Thanks!

I am looking to add the following autographed 1986 Topps and Topps Traded cards (preferably signed in blue):

718 - Jorge Bell All Star
386 - Cecil Feilder
45 - Damaso Garcia
338 - Jorge Bell
459 - Luis Leal
196 - Doyle Alexander
593 - Jesse Barfield
23T - John Cerutti

Have a couple autographed doubles from this set to offer as trade:

412 - Jim Clancy (blue sharpie)
360 - Lloyd Moseby (black sharpie)

There is the potential for a Doyle Alexander private signing coming up. Nothing set in stone, and likely wouldn't be cheap. It will be posted on SCN and Facebook if it happens, so I guess just keep your eyes open.

Ok, so I have a very slight complaint about this thread...

I would appreciate it much more if you posted pictures of each card, so that we can more follow your journey.

Just telling us that you got something is a bit of a "big deal, I got stuff today too" kind of thing. As long as you're going to tell us that you got it, show it to us.

Also, are all 792 cards "signable"? If I remember correctly, there are 6 checklist cards in this set, and they do not have pictures on them, so really there are only 786 cards in the set (or less) to get signed. Your total at the moment should be 264 / (amount that can get signed).

See, I just helped knock 6 cards off you want list.

You're welcome.

I see that leaders cards would be signed, I assume by the players pictured, but who would sign the checklist card? If it's any player listed on the card, then don't you need to get a card signed by every player in oder to have a complete set?

Ultimately, I'm just asking for pictures of your new pickups, instead of a list of what you are picking up. If that comes across as high and mighty, well sorry.

For my sets I have a key player from the checklist sign or someone interesting. Sy Berger was a popular checklist signature while he was living. My friend had key political figures from his set years sign the checklists. The possibilities are really open for it. Vera Clemente is a popular choice for for that TBTC issue. Really, saying it's incompletable because a specific card can't be signed is like saying the monster can't be completed because you'll likely never own a Wagner, Plank, or Doyle. You can collect to the extent you please.

Any player on the card can sign a checklist. Same for Leaders if pictured.

Much as I'd love to provide pictorial proof, it's complicated.

Much as I'd love to provide pictorial proof, it's complicated.

I'm not looking for "proof", I believe you, I just like seeing pictures of stuff when people get things. If you can't, then you can't, not that big of a deal.

When I collected Topps cards, I considered a complete set to include all variations (black & red backs for the 1952 lo numbers, as an example).

Using similar logic, if I collected autographed sets (which I don't) I would consider a checklist to be a card that didn't need to be signed, because it doesn't have a picture. IF I was going to get a player listed on the card to sign it, then my complete-ist nature would cause me to need a card signed by EACH player listed, which obviously would get cumbersome (to say the least).

For cards that have a deceased player, I would consider them as cards that don't need to be signed to have a "complete" set, but getting somebody related to sign it would be a bonus.

But I could be wrong, there are no "rules", I understand that,

I guess we just have our own personal rules. I have my own.

#1 Get the player to sign their base card.

#2 At least one person depicted must sign a Leaders card.

#3 One player on the checklist must sign it.

#4 Deceased players do count in helping me toward my set. While I will not obsess over them, they are important and would have my sights set for a decent price.

So maybe to you personally that criteria wouldn't work if you did a set. With my criteria, that's how I have the number I do.

Love seeing the updates. Has any player sent the card back unsigned?

mantleman
07-07-2016, 02:21 PM
Hi,

I have had a few returned unsigned. Normally they come back asking for anything from $1 (Sid Bream) to $20 (Bill Buckner). Rick Reuschel just returned one unsigned with no apparent reason. My success rate is around 80% out of the roughly 100 I have sent out. That includes a few wildcards that I have sent out to like Ricky Wright, Mark Mcgwire, and Roger Clemens who I don't expect a response from.

It's a bit of a pain in the butt because I have to send an SASE from Canada so I need to buy USA stamps all the time. Not normally a big deal but the exchange rate sucks and I am at the whim of both USPS and Canada Post!!!

My biggest concern is that approximately 20% of the signers do not put the cards back in the top loader or cardsaver when they ship them back so they are sometimes prone to damage.

Hello,
I put together TTM about 75% of the set going on about 10 years ago.....

But unfortunately I was in my 20's and ended up putting it up on eBay for the dough....

Anyway is there anyone out there who has some doubles they want to part with?

I got the itch... and want a jump start LMK via IM if you have available. - James

I am thinking about starting the 1986 topps set as I have nearly 150 of those without really trying yet. If anyone wants to help with my 74 set, I can send you the needs list and I have many 86's to trade with.

I've read Gruber doesn't do 1990 Leaf.

I have more than 100 combined of the 1988/1989 Pacific Legends cards.

I currently have 98 signed cards from the 1965 set.

1962 is around 60 or 70 signed cards. Give or take, I have about 60 signed 1991 Leaf.

To a lesser extent I'm also doing the 1972 Topps set. I have roughly 45 of those signed.

So I have multiple projects I'm doing. Some sets I'm taking more seriously than others.

That's awesome! How long did it take? What was your process? TTM? In-person? eBay? Did you get them all yourself or begin with a "starter pack"? (I'm in the process of purchasing about 50 to get things rolling.) How do you store them? Binders or sleeves?

So many questions, but that's pretty cool you're about done!:cool::cool:
