I didn't bid on this item but I am wondering if anyone can tell me anything about it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1900s-Walter-Johnson-HOF-Leather-Postcard-3-25x5-034-/381146859300?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=30utLZDyuRUVEyPr4DHV01vPN0k%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I know next to nothing about post cards and am wondering if this is really WaJo.

Thanks.

Pretty sure you answered this question when looking at the excellent WaJo footage you recently posted on his pitching motion, nothing like this....

Absolutely irresponsible to identify this leather PC as Walter Johnson. What is the justification, a right-handed pitcher?

Looks like there is some red writing near his leg. I can't make it out but it's possible that in person this is more legible?

Seller has huge amount of transactions with 100% positive feedback so I am sure item is as described. It's not like he is selling an opened pack of smokes with no prewar card in them saying they are non opened containing a T206. Oh crap it is the same seller so who knows who is really on that leather PC.

I actually picked it up. I had set my limit on it for like $45 know it had nothing to do really with WoJo but have only seen a handful of this style of postcard. I try to pick up unique items and a leather postcard from early 1900's qualified. I've seen a few postmarked between 1906-09. I'll let you know what the writing on the from says when I get it in hand but think its just probably a note of some sort that has faded over time.

I collect leather PC's from central Washington, it's rodeo town here. Some are very well done. This "WaJo" PC is a nice example of any dye-cut baseball player used as a stencil. IMO it looks more like Christy Mathewson :). This particular example is probably from the later years of popular leather PC production 1911-15 as the stock looks flimsy. Here's a 1907 leather PC from CWU:

I have many other examples from 1903-26. When you get it in your hands I think you'll be happy, scans really do not do the tangible "feel" of these postcards justice. At $45 that is not a bad price, but fear his description could have led to someone being taken.

Yeah I just thought it was cool as I had not seen a leather postcard and for the price point its not breaking the bank.

If people thought it really was a WoJo though it would have gone for much more. I think most people didn't believe it, didn't trust the seller (which I've had good and bad experiences with) or just didn't know what it is for the price to go up too high.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it.

I agree that there isn't much chance it is WaJo but I think it is still a good pickup for the price because it is definitely interesting.

Edited to add: Brad, I am glad I didn't bid you up!

No worries if you did Bryan I had a cap at $45 dollars so I thought it was cool and unique but wasn't going to pay a lot for it.

I like the leather post cards crudeness.

Absolutely! They can be crudely made, and for the day, frequently vulgar. Here's a Seattle High School Leather PC ca. 1910, I doubt their fight song had "Whiskey We-We" in the lyrics, but who knows?
