I've never started one of these but I did pick up an interesting trade card today with an albumen image of the 1878 Buffalo Bosons, one of the greatest minor league teams ever. The 1878 Bisons won the International Association and had a winning record against National League teams(10-7). They joined the National League the following season. They featured a young Pud Galvin who compiled a record (hold on to your hat Old Hoss) of 72-25.

Thanks for whipping out your Pud and showing it to us.

Sorry...couldn't resist.

I picked up this for my Koufax collection:

I was not aware that you could even have a qualified 1. What is that, double secret probation for cards?

Agreed on this, Adam! There is a flaw in the logic of adding qualifiers to PSA 1s. Dean Wormer must have taken a job with PSA. Nice card nonetheless. --tim

I like it. It lets me know the card is a 1 and has one of the flaws that earns a qualifier. The more info the better right?

Jay, great trade card. It's condition is incredible. I have never seen that color before either. I have seen two green examples. Lipset auctioned the one on the left and I bought the other one in the 1995 Rucker sale and traded it away sometime afterwards.

That's great Kevin. So the one without the trimmed corner has the same ads as mine. The back on mine is undamaged. I've heard that there was a similar trade card made for the Troy team, but I have not seen an image.
It is interesting to note that Bill McGunnigle, who is featured in the Old Judge set as the manager of Brooklyn, was a player on the 1878 Buffalo squad.

First I must say a huge thanks to Brian McQueen, who held this for me for a lot longer than most people would, just so I could get a tough card for my Dots Miller collection. I didn't know this Orange Borders card even existed until I saw his listing and I was told that there aren't any graded, so it was probably a one shot deal to acquire this card and Brian went above and beyond to help me get it

Hi Val,

John Henry split time between catching and 1st base. His T222 looks like he has a smaller 1st basemen's mitt on to me.

Patrick

ValKehl
02-06-2015, 07:53 PM
Patrick, I wasn't aware that Henry ever played 1st base. But, I just now checked baseball-reference.com, and I see that he played both positions during the first 2 years (1910 & 1911) of his MLB career, and catcher only during his last 7 years (including 1914, the year the T222s were issued). Re Henry's T222 card, I think he is holding a catcher's mitt, but have no expertise re vintage mitts. BTW, nice accomplishment!!

Thanks Todd I know this card is not on everyone's want list But after the Sports collectors Bible came out I made up a Ruth and Gehrig Checklist and from them had a small list of cards that I told myself I would buy (if I could afford them) If I ever came across them. Like R301 Gehrig R304 Ruth / Gehrig Ruth Fleer back stamp.. of Course Baltimore Ruth.. and this one that just fell in my lap totally out of the blue and after 35 plus years crossed it off.

Jonathan, I gasped when I saw your fantastic Wool's Bread pickups - truly rare cards! Congrats - I can imagine the euphoria you felt when you got the Ruth card. I can still remember the excitement I experienced many years ago when I picked up a WaJo with the Wool's back, which wasn't yet reflected in the Standard Catalog, for my WaJo card collection.

Val Thanks it was the best Card pickup I have had in some time.
Back in the day it seemed every weekend I went to a show or flea Market I saw or bought something that sparked my collector engine and it happened so often that I took it for granted. Turning over a page of T206's in Silver spring MD and seeing all the cards had Red Hindu backs ( I left all the commons and just took the two HOF's including a WAJO) because the next table or the next show I was going to have the chance to get my grubby little baseball collecting hands on something bigger and better. Like all good things it came to pass
Changed but overall still a mass of collectors trading collecting hunting enjoying our time with these small pieces of paper. And I know most folks look at that Ruth and say so what but sitting in my office staring at that card I looked down and my hand was shaking like you I gasped. Really scary part was that there were two days left in auction..TWO VERY LONG DAYS...and each night I went to bed I felt like I was sped off to the Never land populated with Baseball hero's (And none bigger than Babe Ruth). And all is well that end's well. I got a real shot of collecting adrenaline and a great card, both I will treasure for a time.

I recently bought a beautifully framed October 10 1910 The Cleveland Leader newspaper highlighting Lajoie beating out Cobb for the batting title in 1910. There was a book written about this titled The Chalmers Race, which I just picked up also. I already had a green Cobb so I had to get a Lajoie portrait to go with.
This portrait ranks up there with the WaJo portrait IMHO; but you have to find the right one...without lipstick. :p

Thanks, an affordable copy has been high on my want list for years. I think it is one of the nicest looking early Ruth's to show him on the Yankees, as a hitter and in pinstripes. It shows him in the white pinstriped hat that was used in 1921 too when Ruth had the best ever year in baseball history.

Got my very 1st Cobb last night and so happy to share my excitement with Sean & you guys. like i told Sean, i wanted one that was presentable and i got thos unique piece on top of all things and its ungraded.
Its the print oddity, as Sean said over-sized.

Nice pick up I was debating on bidding on that one last night but decided against it. Glad that you got it!

Had some cards I've had for awhile holdered. Some are new pickups, some just have a new house :D

That miscut Shipke may prove to be at the top of a sheet since there's no two/double name showing.

First vintage pick-up in quite some time. I don't have a very large collection, but for some reason this is my third Griffith w/bat and second with the "missing 'i' from Cincinnati." My scanner isn't that great to begin with, but the new PSA holders seem to come out extra blurry when I scan them.

Nice Radebaugh. Seems to come up a little less frequent than other Series 1 cards. Good score.

Nice Cobb Polar Bear!
Thanks guys. I am thrilled by all means.
I might be catching this pre-war bug that you guys have, it makes me more enthusied to go after the 'green' Cobb next, as i was wanting to get that one first. I may go for the 4 Cobb run, while keeping the love of my RC run.

Came in the mail today. I got 3 cards to add to my epdg collection.

But this has to be one of the absolutely sexiest SGC 20's in the history of ever. Black marker and all. I have a new favorite card in my collection.

I'm glad that your first Cobb is a special one. Get the Green one, and if you decide to go for the others, let me know.

Well, here is the completion of my February pickups. Miller Huggins is part of my March search, but when I saw the card I couldn't pass it up. I was hoping it wouldn't show up until Monday ;). Thanks to the board members who helped out with 2 of these cards to continue my Cincinnati team sets!!

Happy to add this beauty via eBay... another of the cards I'd have probably never discovered without N54.

Nice pickup, Ian. You are right...I'd hate to think about where I'd be without net54. I would be collecting shiny stuff only [emoji33]
