View Full Version : Most overrated...overvalued VINTAGE card?

In your opinion...what VINTAGE BB card is the most overrated...overvalued card out there?

Now I'm not looking for T206 Wags...because it is what it is. I'm talking Zeenut Halla...T210 mascot card...T206 Shag/Titus...or even card once thought to be tough but eventually deemed not so much...ie T207 Loudy.

For over rated I`d say, the Play Ball Joe Jackson card. Big a fan as the next guy but a card 20 years after he`s active, rather spend the money on a different Jackson item.

How bout Mr Ten Million?

I'm not sure what card that's in reference to? Please share.

I agree that the Play Ball card of Joe Jackson is the most overvalued - and for the same reason, several others from that set as well (players appearing far outside of their careers - kind of like the current tribute card frenzy)

I have craved that Zeenut Halla card ever since the first time I saw it a few years ago...and since I have spent a lot to get the other cards I always wanted, that would be at the top of my list.

Obak card of "Ten Million". Family convinced his mother and father to name him ten, as a nice play on their surname (million) so that his name would stand out.

See pic (not my pic or my card) and this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Million

T206 Magie.

It's nothing more that a 1909 version of a typo, but it sells for more than a T206 Cobb.

Well in that same line of thought: Doyle Nat'l. An improper classification that causes a card to sell for prices similar to a t206 Wagner.

Welcome to the world of 206's, pat :) I agree pat...those slight errors are the worst!

Sean, wouldn't the value of magie have a lot to do with it's rarity? And not necessarily because it's overhyped?

Yes, the error is rare. The card is the same as a MAGEE card, not rare at all.

For sure, but I guess we could say the same for Demmit and O'hara as well.

Oh yeah...put me down for the T206 Titus. A few years ago it was selling like a common should. A hoarder and some hype really made this card "rare".

I've got to say the 1938 Goudey Joe DiMaggio looks silly to me.

I love Goudey. I love Joe DiMaggio. I love cartoons. But a Goudey Joe DiMaggio cartoon is just ridiculous.

http://imageshack.com/a/img673/5034/RMb2p6.png

I can't help but think of Chris Farley on Saturday Night Live, "fat guy in a little coat", only it's "fat head on a little body". Goudey started so well, and I know they had some big time budget concerns in later years. But they could have done better than this. And what's with the little phrases, "considered one of the best outfielders of all-time, rated a niche in the Hall of Fame from his first season". Really? He'd played two years by the time this card was printed. They were phenomenal years, yes, but Hall of Fame, and "all-time great" talk after 300 games?

Just another reason why this card is stupid, and decidedly overrated. This would be one of the very last of his cards I would ever add to my collection, and only if I needed it to complete a run of some sorts.

1948 Leaf Ruth for the same reason as the 1940 Play Ball Jackson. Not a fan of cards post career.

Slightly off topic, I wonder what collectors (back then) thought of Jackson's inclusion in the 1940 PB set? Was it "oh, that's cool", "who?" or "cheatin bum, why's this guy in my cards?" Definitely over-rated but any of the T206 printing variations would be at the top of my list.

Hey, that's my card!;).

I really like the Ten Million, and felt compelled to get one after seeking out the Obak building in Portland (using Mark McRae's directions, and following a nice lesson on PCL/NWL, etc). In addition to the cool name, I think it's a very nice looking card and like so many other T212s, has some funky cool background colors. I guess I agree with the others that it's value is probably a bit inflated, but for my sake I hope it stays there!

.. As far as over hyped, chalk up another vote for Titus... And 100% agree on post career cards like the PB Jackson. I'll add another to that list- 1932 US Caramel Ty Cobb.

I agree with you - cool name, and a handsome looking card. The rich, deep red background is quite appealing.

'33-34 Goudey Lajoie--it really only has a tradition of mystique going for it. It's not a card issued contemporaneously with his playing days, but instead long after those were over, and its simply not all that rare (last time I checked, PSA had graded 80-some).

Best wishes,

Larry
