View Full Version : Show A Non-Sport Autograph

I know this is primarily a sports sub-forum, but as much as I love sports I'd like to see some other sides of the autograph realm. Let's see some non-sports autographs from the Board.

Here's my Houdini letter from 1926. I especially like this letter because, as a writer, I can't help but appreciate how excited Houdini was about the new Colliers. I also love the flair in his signature. Seems like he was in a good mood that day:

Got this unsigned back in 1997 and took me over 15 years, much $$ and traveled to 2 continents to complete. Have picture of Ford signing and has been signed by every cast and crew on poster, except a screenwriter who died before movie came out, plus James Earl Jones, Ian McDiarmid and Jeremy Bulloch. Probably the nicest overall piece in my collection. That being said, doesn't fit in with everything else I own, and probably would sell for right price.

I don't keep many autographs other than my rock book. Here are a few that are important to me.

Dedication of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Libary. Is was built next to my college and I watched the construction from the science library. I got press credentials for the dedication and took these two photos. I printed both photos in the darkroom (8x10). The first one I also drymounted to a mat board and cut the mat and framed it. The second one is unframed.

Nathaniel Hawthorne - I got the signature and engraving separately. I built the frame and matted it. Mat is actually double mat burgundy over black. Frame is a nice solid wood frame in gold about an inch deep. It hangs on our entryway wall next to my wife's Renoir engraving.

Of all the Einstein pieces in my collection, this is my favorite--a very important letter to James Coleman, author of Relativity for the Layman, in which Einstein presents his thought on how to properly explain Relativity to a lay audience. His conclusion? "Now you may have doubts that this is too much for the possible understanding of the reader... One can indeed have doubts whether a popular exposition of the essentials is possible at all."

And one of my favorite modern Presidential pieces. This is an authentically signed extradition warrant, with related papers, to bring a fugitive back to the United States. This one was done in April 1963, as President, in the last 8 months of his life, and contains a tough version of his full signature, John F. Kennedy.

David, I love those Wright Brothers autographs.

Thinking about them, and what they went through physically to get those planes built and tested, I think that qualifies much more as 'sport' than billiards, so here's my Hoppe. Inexpensive, but fairly early and high on my list, as I collect Hoppe Pro pool cues as well. Your 1927 Yankees would have just been winding down from their famous World Series when this was signed:

Don't be shy, let's see more.

Here's another one I like:

1st President, George Washington on a cut from a Mountain Peak Lottery ticket. Pretty nice shape to be almost 250 years old. The Mountain Road Lottery was a fund raising project conceived in 1767 by George Washington and others to finance the building of a road through the Allegheny Mountains in Virginia, and construct a resort in the Hot Springs and Warms Springs of Augusta County, which were reputed to have healing properties. Washington acted as manager of the lottery. 85% of the proceeds would be paid out in prizes; the remaining 15% would be kept for the Mountain Road project. Each lottery ticket cost £1. As there were other lotteries being run at the time, Washington’s lottery was not a success. In 1769, King George III banned all lotteries in the American colonies. The Mountain Road was built in 1772, however, when the Virginia legislature voted a sum of £300 pounds for the purpose of “clearing a safe and good road from the Warm Springs in Augusta County to Jennings Gap.”

Wow. We are currently watching the HBO 'John Adams' mini-series - it does a great job of giving the guys like Jefferson personalities. Lots of time spent on Jefferson and his writing of the Declaration of Independence.

Great, great signature to have.

Does the Adams mini-series address their drinking habits? I was reading a fun article today about how much booze guys like Jefferson, Washington, and Adams used to drink daily. It said Jefferson spent something like 10 percent of his entire Presidential income on wine alone. And George Washington would need to switch out his teeth when they became too stained with brandy and wine during parties. They sounded a lot more fun to be around than modern politicians.

This may not be the most valuable item posted here, but it has a lot of value to my wife. I just found this on ebay and it was being sold for the letterhead. This is a letter written by her great-great-grandfather George Washington Wells (1846-1912). He was one of the co-founders of American Optical Company in 1869. He held many patents in the field of optometry. He had three sons who were very serious collectors. The sons built Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, MA which highlights many of their collections. Her father and brother are the III and IV namesakes of one of the sons. One of the largest wooden ships ever built, a 6 masted coastal schooner was named after George W. Wells. It was launched in 1900 and ran aground off of Ocracoke Island, N.C. in 1913.
