Nice looking Mays for the grade. A good way to start the new year. I have my eye on several Mays cards but have not yet pulled the trigger on any of them.

Upgrades to my 1975 Topps set. The George Foster and Reggie Jackson really needed upgrading and I'm glad to add these 2 specimens.

Congrats on a great pick up.

Thank you sir ! I went into the weekend saying all I would do is make fairly inexpensive purchases to upgrade the 1975 Topps set and get some inexpensive mid-low grade Red Mans.

Well, then an opportunity came along I could not pass on. :)

That's a heavy duty, Mick, Hank! But let's single out that 75 Jackson-- that's my type of card. Would come back a 9 several times out of 10 submissions. Great job on that one. Sweet card.

I've been sleeping on the 55 Mays; that action scene is awesome.

Speaking of 1975 Topps PSA 8's that are close to 9's.................Did anyone on here pick up this 75 Topps Mike Schmidt last night off ebay ?
Man, I wanted this one bad but lost the bidding war.

Congrats to whoever got this gem.

A pair of really tough variations - 1959 Hanebrink without the trade statement on back and a 1966 Landrum with the 'partially airbrushed' button.

I was so salty at missing that one that I treated myself to this as a consolation:

And got a new Epson scanner with which I was finally able to take a proper scan of the new Mick. Idiot that I am, though, I put a long vertical scratch in the beautiful SGC holder. It barely shows up in the scan but I will have to get it reholdered down the line.

Today has to be one of the best for me in regards to collecting. My co-worker who last month gave me a 1968 Bench presented another gift to me; a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan! This was the last card I needed to complete my 1968 set. I was speechless! When he gave me the Bench card he wanted to post a photo of the exchange. So we took a photo of the Bench card and he posted it with the caption "Now only needs the Ryan". His uncle saw the post and sent him the Ryan card to give to me.

After seven years my 1968 set is now complete!

Nice cards, Adam.

I go on mid - to low range raw card binges all the time. It scratches the itch all the same.

Jason, your Rose rookie looks EX + to me. Great find and it looks under-graded unless there is a crease the scan doesn't show.

Jim, congrats on finishing off the 68 Topps set. You must be a great guy to get a Bench and Ryan RCs given to you.

Love the vintage OPC! I picked up several late 60s and early 70s OPC cards for my Cardinals collection. I have not had a chance to scan yet.

Do you have any of the 1974 OPC? Those are tough to find!

Hey, Mike--do you live in Austin, and is so what part ? From 1985 to 1990 I lived in the Woods of Westlake, just across 360 from Westlake HS. Austin has changed a lot since then, but is still a blue dot in a red sea .:)

Yes, I live in horrible, stinking, lousy Austin. So anyone reading this - please don't move here. And if you know someone thinking of moving here - tell them it's a terrible place to live. ;)

I've been in Austin since '72. Have lived off I-35 just south of the river for the last 30 years. Even though it has changed an awful lot, I love it here - but don't tell anyone that. Remember: Austin = horrible place to live.

The Woods of Westlake is a very nice area. I worked near there for a very short period of time in '91. One definite negative change since '90 is the traffic. I think our traffic is worse than Houston.

Yes, Austin is still a blue oasis in a red state, but it is getting a little less blue. :(

PS I love all the little seen cards you post. Please keep it up.

Matt - as always, great pick ups.
I am usually not much on the 'floating heads' league leader cards, but I am a fan of the '62 HR leaders card for what it represents from a historical/significance perspective. I picked one up last month. Tough one to find with good centering and absence of print flaws.

No one remembers, but Jim Gentile had a hell of a season in '61 as well. Those other 2 guys completely overshadowed him, however

Thank you and I share your exact same logic behind the 62 HR leader card. I felt the card represents a special moment historically in the game and it just charmed me based on that. And I also love how it shines a light on Gentile's "lost" season, as well. Completely agree.

I was also impressed by how tough the card is to find with centering and decent image quality; I love cards like that and this one had nice centering.

I also liked how Mantle seems to be looking at Gentile, as if to say, "What the hell is this guy doing here?"

I had a 1974 Seaver OPC but sold it. Nice card too.

That Mantle exhibit is probably not from a poster. If it is on slick thin paper and machine cut it is more than likely made for attaching to the machine headers. The company printed cards on that kind of paper, probably because it was cheaper and lighter than card stock for the advertising pieces, which were offered to vendors as freebies. Many times more difficult to find than a regular card. If it is on thicker cardboard but not like a typical card and is handcut or of a dimension different than a standard card, it may be some kind of interim production item. I have a few of them from the early 1950s.

Just picked this up from a fellow board member. I think this looks way better than a 4. Not perfect centering, but not too shabby either.

The Ryan rookie holds a special place in my heart. When I was 10 or 11 years old my best friend and I used to play "tag" with his younger sister. "Tag" consisted of, try to catch us, but you'll never be able to since you're five years younger than us. We used to say "if you can catch us, we'll give you a Nolan Ryan rookie card". Of course, which we didn't have. Now I do.

Thanks Matty! Really appreciate it. Was thinking of looking for a 54' with an image that's a little sharper . Still thinking about it though. None the less still a beautiful card.

I also liked how Mantle seems to be looking at Gentile, as if to say, "What the hell is this guy doing here?"

I'm thinking I'd either never seen this card or hadn't really paid attention before. Yes, the history captured is priceless! This must be the best Leaders card ever, and I'm not even a big Mantle or Yankees guy. With all due respect to Messrs. Killebrew and Gentile, imagine how cool this card would be if they only put the top two guys on it.

Thanks for sharing the pickup!

I have to admit I slept on the card for the longest time, until my buddy who works with a card dealer told me to take note of it due to the historic aspect and the centering issue. Lots of overlooked leader cards out there that have huge star power. Would probably make for a great scan thread of leader cards...

Having gained 40 pounds and made too many impulse buys (though none for big $$) in the months following my divorce, I decided to focus 2015 on the 1956 Topps Brooklyn Dodgers team set, of which I already owned a total of 0 cards. I can only buy with money I "earn" by taking care of my health, as detailed here (https://jasoncards.wordpress.com/2015/01/05/how-you-can-be-successful-this-year/).

So here is what I earned so far this year, along with doing some great things for my health and enjoying the immediate gratification structure that normally is missing from dieting and exercise:

Jason,
Good for you to take some small but positive steps towards health and have it apply to you hobby in a good way. I think it's a great idea and would encourage you to start your own thread about this so we as a community can see your progress.
Imagine how great you will feel both physically and emotionally when you've earned enough for Jackie Robinson or a Sandy Koufax.

For those who don't know what this is all about I would encourage you to read Jason's link in his above post.

Best of luck and keep us posted,
Drew

A big one here. Very low grade, but helps me kill my 54 Bowman set.

You get to live up to your screen name now! So quick story about this card...I was 10 or 11 when I got my first baseball card price guide as a gift. It was either the first or second year that the Beckett/Eckes book came out, and my mom's boyfriend hoped it would help me turn the corner from thinking about my cards as a fun hobby to thinking about my cards as a way to make money (still has never happened...I am in for the fun all the way even today!).

The book had pictures of some of the most valuable cards in the hobby, one of which was this 1954 Bowman Ted Williams, which I think back then was presumed much more rare than perhaps it is today. In a way that didn't happen with the Wagner, Mantle, Lajoie, or other top cards, I saw the picture and thought, "Wow, that would be my dream card!"

35 years later, I still don't have it. Maybe someday though. Congratulations to you, Rob, on picking up such a great card! In my book, the Ted Williams Baseball Card HOF is probably...

1. 1954 Bowman
2. 1939 Play Ball
3. 1941 Play Ball
4. 1957 Topps
5. 1959 Fleer "How Ted Hit .400" (I know I just lost all credibility with this pick, but for some weird reason I am a huge fan of this Ted Williams "common.")

brian1961

Jason---

You didn't lose credibility with me, at least. I for one like the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set. Fleer spent big bucks to secure the exclusive right to print any baseball cards of Teddy Ballgame. The colorization mirrors their fine 3 Stooges release of the same year. I like them.

However, methinks you should add to your listing of Mr. Williams the following two cards--- 1954 Wilson Franks and the 1952 Red Man chewing tobacco card. ---Brian Powell

Thanks MattyC. Picked it up raw off Ebay and was praying it was not altered in any way. Good news was the seller offered returns and also said that he had that card in his collection for over 30 years when I emailed him regarding if the card had be altered or trimmed in any way. The 1961 White Sox team card on the right is the extremely rare variation where no yellow appears in the logo. Love it!! But the jewel of my month BY FAR is the Mr. Barton In Action on the left. For anyone who collects the '72 Topps set, this card is literally as close to impossible to find centered as you can possibly get. It was the card under the Willie Mays IA card on the printing sheet and both are always found miscut way to the left every time you see them. I am ecstatic to now have this frickin' beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for as the centering on the 72's I have been trying to find a centered Johnny Bench IA and have not had any success. Cannot imagine trying to complete the set centered.

Is it just me or or are the hands on the 53 Mays just a little out of proportion? Very cool looking card and it is on my bucket list.

To finish out the month with something i been wanting for a while,
but first heres what was on my mind all last night:
Buyers remorse?? Sorta say, I always wanted this card, but when i saw i was at my max, i was second guessing on upping the bid. The drama is there is also several other auctions ending in a week or so that have many items i also want to have. Have you ever thought of hoping of not winning an auction, in hopes on bidding something else.
Wheres the lottery when you need it. Well i had went to bed early last night, at it was at its max. The result was it held up for the last 4 or so hours when it ended and quite happy of grabbing such a iconic card.
The card: These are very hard to find centered and with good focus.
