That's great Paul. And please point out the differences for us. Thanks in advance.

check out the clarity of the pix of Ruth and Gehrig between both pix.

Also check out their caps.

gotcha - thanks.

I would never bid on anything like this on ebay; however, given that you posted a link, I checked it out. The seller's description sounded like he did a thorough job investigating. Not enough to convince me to bid, but a better effort than most.

I have a Ruth/Johnson broadside arriving tomorrow, so I'm noticing this stuff more than normal. Mine came from Walter's estate (thanks for that info, Henry), so I'm not at all concerned.

Thanks Paul. I don't doubt you at all, but that is a scary good looking fake. The clarity of the Ruth/Gehrig images appears different than the REA example, but it is a convincing fake. Is this a piece that is commonly faked? Have others seen examples?

This seller too ACOFIND sells a ton of fake broadsides. etc., they've been selling them for years.

Search ACOFIND here and you will see a few threads on them.

I saw the listing about 3 months ago and I was very interested in this piece however I was cautious based on the images and did compare them to the one in REA as well. I forwarded the link on to Rob Lifson and asked for his opinion and he expressed using an abundance of caution over the one on eBay.

The seller is a very nice person and seems honest enough when I talked to him and he even has a report done by a professional firm that did authenticate the age of the piece being from the 20's. He forwarded it on to me and it all checked out.

I did forward the images on to a couple of other "experts" and they all did not like the piece and that is basically what convinced me to stay away from it. One other thing that bothered me was that the seller agreed to sell the piece for $2,000 and my thought was that if it is too good to be true....

Thanks Bob. What did the experts not like about the piece?

Thanks Bob. What did the experts not like about the piece?

They all could not put their finger on it and to a person, they all said that they would need to hold it in their hands to give a qualified opinion on it.

Personally after talking to the buyer and reading the report on it, there is a possibility that it could be real but, I chose not to buy it because I do not think it is not a very attractive piece so I would have bought it to flip it and with no clear opinions on it, I ultimately elected to pass on the piece

AS pointed out the one on ebay isn't as crisp in the photos. Look at the lines around the silhouettes. They aren't solid like on the real one shown. It just has the fake look to it. It's sort of like porn, I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. Same thing with this broadside (not porn :) but fake).

This was submitted to us for auction, in June 2014 with the same analysis stating it was the from the 1920s etc.
I simply did not like the look of it, and emailed images to several people. Some were fooled, some were not. I sent the piece to Bryan Dec and he definitely said it was a reprint, and we returned it to the consignor with that information. I thank Bryan for his help....but I guess the seller is still trying to sell it.

Did anyone give it the blacklight test?

That may be a way of determining for sure if it's fake/modern.

Of course they can always print it on vintage paper, but it would be one way of determining if it was 100% fake/modern.

If it glows.

Since this question strongly relates to this post, I'll ask it here:

Does anyone know how to block another ebayer from communicating with you? The ebay member in question communicated with me well past the point where I was ready to stop. Another ebay member with an almost identical name then began harassing me. Now the first guy is back. I'm getting the typical "I'm turning you in to ebay" threats, and also getting threatened that he's going to turn me in to Leon

While it's impossible to avoid the just punishment that Leon might decide to inflict on me for questioning someone who is selling forgeries on ebay, is there a way to get rid of ebay members like these, other than ignoring them?

And by the way - this tool IS reading our posts, so if you have anything to say to him, just post.

Give him your ebay i.d. and you'll get more than you asked for, although he's quite literate and never says 'god bless'.

I should never have contacted the guy, but I can't tolerate fraudsters and a*holes. I've been called the latter many times here, but it's always been by bigger ones who just didn't like any hint of competition :)

The contact has continued to flow from these two i.d.s. To answer my own question, I was able to find an area in ebay where you can let them know about unwanted communication. Not sure if it will have any effect, but we'll see.

Also found that if you put someone on your 'blocked bidder' list, it's an ebay violation for them to bid on your items using another i.d., or for any of their friends or family to bid on your items. That was good to find out.
