Mike,

Congrats on the Clarence "Red" Munson. It's one of my favorites as well. I was tempted to bid on it to use it for trade bait, but I decided to sit it out instead.

Enjoy,

I am excited to add these two to my collection. The photo isn't a card, but it was used for a card (Rice-Stix, or at least for Paul, the Dizzy lines up with the stadium slightly differently on the card).

Interesting...Southern Pines, NC was the spring training site for the 1914 Baltimore Terrapins of the Federal League, so that could be Frank Smith wearing an old White Sox jersey before the season started.

Does the guy in the sweater look like George Gibson to anyone else besides me?

Would the Pirates have trained against a Federal League team, or would that have been considered taboo at the time?

and getting a HoFer is always a good thing. But then Jeff mentioned that it had this stamp on the back from some guy named McCormick, and I thought "Hey, wouldn't it be kind of cool to get that, and then try and get as many others like that as I can? Sort of like rebuilding this guys collection..." The $6,500 OBO price was sort of hard to swallow, but luckily, Jeff was willing to negotiate.

Thanks, Jeff.

Does the guy in the sweater look like George Gibson to anyone else besides me?

My first reaction upon seeing that picture, before having read any of the discussion, was "Hey cool, a PC with Gibson in it." At a glance, I totally think it's him, but in general, I'm terrible at the whole face/photo/player recognition game (this extends into real life, I am very bad at remembering faces).

Anyone else see Gibson?

Richard.

Trying to track this down: Frank Smith was indeed with Baltimore in 1914, but Gibson never played in the Federal League and was still with the Pirates in 1914. Evers was with the Robins in 1914 but I can't tell who is to his left (our right). If the picture was taken following the 1913 season , when Evers was still with the Cubs, the guy to his left resembles Bresnahan. It's possible the postcard was kept for a year before using. Of course, all of this is guessing and you can throw almost all of it out with barnstorming-style play.

I am questioning whether or not it is a good idea to post a picture of my Doyle on the internet - there is no way that could come back to haunt me, right? (bad joke...)

When it showed up I was pleased to see the nice red printer's mark and the missing bottom of the Y - they add a little character to this card that has so much focus on the caption.

Hey Brian, I'll "see" your Gassler's Bread pickups and "raise" you this Gassler's HOFer! Now then, about that W504 card of Sam Rice that you surely want to sell/trade me ...!!! :D

There is an interesting story about this Gassler's card I just received in today's mail for my Sam Rice collection. Last February, I learned that Gasoline Alley Antiques of Seattle, WA, had several Gassler's Bread cards for sale, including a Sam Rice. I contacted them, we agreed a price, and I sent my payment. A few weeks later, Gasoline Alley refunded my payment with the explanation that they cannot find their Gassler's cards - the last time they saw them was when they did a show some weeks earlier - they further explained that if I saw how disorganized their inventory of antiques and collectibles was, I would understand why they couldn't locate the cards - the proprietor promised to let me know when they eventually found the cards, but he did not want to hold my payment indefinitely. Since then, I contacted Gasoline Alley once, during the summer - no luck - they still hadn't found their Gassler's cards. As weeks turned into months, I pretty much lost hope for ever obtaining this card. Then, on December 24th, when I checked my new emails, I had one from Gasoline Alley that reads "Hello Val and Merry Christmas! While cleaning up for our annual Christmas party we found the box with the missing Gassler's Bread cards. We do have the RICE card. We can still honor your offer of $xxx including the insured shipping."

...They get the flip wrong or incomplete about 20-30 % of the time , no matter what you print , in large letters , with exclamation points , on the submission form.....they got the year right though . And it is a Goudey Premium .

...And despite the tiny script in the font on the facsimile signature , it is one of the '' Wide Pens ''...So my Willis Hudlin Master Set is one card closer to completion....

That's a tough one. It's really all about the buyer. I've seen autographs of DiMaggio sell roughly for $100-$200 range. Now the card is another story. I've seen vintage cards autographed sell in the $500 range in that era. It's tough to give you a price. But still a nice piece for the collection.

Sweet Joe D Robby. My guess is this would get at least $700, or more. A pretty well worn raw '39 PB Dimaggio, with a faint pencil signature got nearly $600 recently.

Mike, Frank & Derek - Many thanks for the kind words re my latest pickup for my Sam Rice collection. I have been incredibly fortunate to have picked up several very tough Rice cards over the last 12 months or so.

Darrin & Chris - Your spectacular Speakers are special eye candy!

Raymond - I really like your WaJo pickups. But then, I've never seen a WaJo card I didn't like! Be careful - collecting WaJos can become addictive!

Lots of other fabulous pickups this month! The monthly pickup threads have always been and will always be among my absolute favorite threads!

So the wife and I decided to go to probably the largest antique mall in NY and see what we can find for our PCs. After about 3 hours, we realized that we haven't covered not even half the bldg., but it was time to go. So luckily, the ground I did cover I managed to uncover these from a stack of postcards and bottle caps, for a damn good price at that. These are not the actual pics, I am having a hard time trying to do so, so I pulled these from google, mine are raw.

LOL, yes I do know that! I received it yesterday and love it! It looks better in person than my scan shows so I ordered a new scanner (I bought a used one off eBay but it does have CCD technology). I'll post a new scan when the scanner arrives.

I was so excited when the card arrived I showed it to my wife. Amazingly, she said she loved it. I was a bit shocked as she's never said anything about the other cards I have. Funny enough she said, "if it was my card I'd break it out of that plastic thing and get it framed and put it on the wall". She then went on to say she really liked the artwork of the T206 cards. So for me this is some great news to have my wife supporting my new T206 habit!

I'm glad you like it Greg. It's nice to be able to send a card to someone who really appreciates it. Having your wife support your addiction, er, habit, is also a bonus :) Best,

Kenny

Doug, nice pickup. I believe that was on Ebay recently, if it is the same one I was giving it serious consideration. Congrats.

Just received this from the Saco River Auction. This was Lot #1, and for those who followed the auction and who were discouraged by the high first price, I apologize. The pose is one of my favorites and made a nice companion piece to my Coupon Type 2.

I am not nutty enough to attempt a complete back run, but if another high end rarer back shows up, I might be the one running up the price. :D:D:D

Enjoyed the auction and the cards are beautiful. The SGC holders were clean and sparkly with no gasket problem although I did put a 1 inch gash in the holder while removing it from the bubble wrap.

T204 and its a HOFer. I have mixed feelings about the set, but I won't know my true feelings until I get it in hand.

A few months back I sold a large group of cards to a friend. It helped me get some great cards, so it was a success, but I missed some of the cards I sold. I was happy to get my lipstick Lajoie, Sov150 Clarke and blood-stained Burns back over the weekend.

Thanks Sean, no I love seeing other members' runs, but the rare back T206s are just too hard to find in the condition I like. I wouldn't mind picking up a few Baker or McGraw cards if they become available though.

Thanks to Mike Healer selling me this Coupon Speaker, I'm probably in the market for a rarer back T206 Speaker too. :D:D:D

The Speaker comes in type 3. There's not a better looking set than type 2 in nice condition. The nice ones can be tough to find though. Ron has an outstanding collection of them.

This Ganley was a long journey but it completes my back run. I honestly didn't kmow what I was in for when deciding to chase it. Here's a little secret - after 8 years of collecting and tracking Ganley sales the Sov 150 does not get due credit for it's toughness. Buy 'em when you see 'em!

Thanks to a board member for pointing this one out! I got it with four minutes left to go!
