I can't think of any reason why Sy Berger isn't inducted in some capacity into the Baseball Hall Of Fame. What he did to promote and expand the sport of baseball is probably unmatched by any individual.

They induct broadcasters and executives into the Hall, certainly there's a place for Sy.

I brought this up years ago and the consensus was no but really, think of how much he did to popularize the game. I think he should at least be considered by whatever committee does the considering for guys like him.

It makes too much sense, therefore it will never happen.

I would induct Harry M. Stevens before inducting Sy Berger if you are going to go down that road. Its a slippery slope as there are several guys with no direct affiliation to the game that did huge amounts to promote it. You would then have to start inducting prominent Sporting goods Manufacturers, and then who knows what is next.... Hilda Chester the worlds greatest fan? Not saying its a bad idea, but be prepared for the onslaught of "worthy candidates".

That is OK. We are going to need to induct someone while all of the Roid freaks fail to get in...

I would definitely support any nomination efforts for Sy.

I hear what you're saying, but personally I think the slippery slope is inducting anyone who never put on a uniform, and there are plent of those guys with plaques....

Contrary to what their sportscasting peers like to introduce them as - Broadcasters and sportswriters are NOT Hall-of-Famers. They are HONORED with an award given by the HOF. They are NOT inductees, but honorees. There's a big difference (especially for we HOF card collectors). There is also another award given (fairly new), called the Buck O'Neil award, which honors folks whose main contribution is the promotion of the game of baseball. They don't give it out every year - I believe there have only been three recipients so far. But that would seem to be the appropriate award for this case.

If you consider Sy, you can't forget Woody Gelman. He never gets the credit he should.

The San Diego Chicken has also done a lot to popularize the game

When they start inducting mascots, I'm switching to football.

On a more serious note, and many years after the fact, it seems to me that inductees should be limited to players, with maybe a separate category for managers. Everyone else -- owners, commissioners, sportscasters, whatever -- should be honorees. I would have no problem including Sy Berger in this group (or Marvin Miller for that matter).

They are talking about Seymour Berger (Long time Topps employee credited with 1952 Topps design) not Eros Bolivar Barger (7 year/151 game baseball player).

I wouldn't have a problem with Sy Berger being inducted, but until Marvin Miller gets in, no non-player or non-manager should get in.
