A friend's son has a pretty huge pile of 1985-92 baseball cards (a quick look by me showed Topps, Fleer, Fleer minis). I told him that most were probably worthless, but I would like to be able to provide him with a list of cards worth culling out. Anyone have suggestions?

Long shot, but 1990 Topps Frank Thomas "no name on front". '89 Upper Deck Griffey Jr. rookie comes to mind as well.

Maddux and Randy Johnson rookies and I would grab any Bo Jackson RCs but that's just me.

I would add the 89 Fleer Randy Johnson incase he has any of the Marlboro error variations. If by chance he has a 89 Fleer Wade Boggs I would be interested in any with out the black dot after the words THROWS RIGHT on the card back.

In addition to what has been noted, 1990 Leaf Frank Thomas, 1992 Bowman Piazza and 1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera are all decent cards.

I love grabbing '91 Topps lots, and looking for all the obscure variations. Some of them can get you a forty or fifty bucks, or maybe more...

The '85 McGwire Olympic cards still sell, although at a fraction of the $120 price tag that they once commanded back in 1998-99.

Not alot to add, pretty much covered anything I'd be interested in.

Btw, my understanding is that the 89 Fleer Billy Ripken has a ridiculous # of variations, something like 10. My favorite is of course the original...:)

From a thread I created at Freedomcardboard some years back:

Let this be a brief resource for those finding themselves asking "is there anything I should save" before throwing away bulk late 80's and early 90's cards.

I am NOT covering promos, inserts, test issues, tiffany sets because those are all very well covered on this board and others like the collector's universe and net54 sites.

This is stuff that can be found in anyone's junk era stash. A list of pack-issued rarities to pull aside before trashing or giving away your junk era stuff. This DOES NOT mean you will make a ton of cash in their sales as the E&V market is rather volatile. These are items that compared to the outrageous production numbers of this era, are genuinely scarcer.

I'd also add a really obscure one, the 88 score come in three different die cuts.
First run- "tufts" on the corners can look like damaged corners, but it's extra paper sticking out.
second run- Tufts moved in from the corners. Basically 8 bits that stick out.
third and later runs- look normal.

The first batch caused a lot of complaints, so they changed the die cut mats. The change wasn't good, so it got changed again. The second run was very brief, and so far I've only found cards numbered between 221-660. They're not easy to find.

There's a bunch of little differences too, but they're a nuisance to look for, and hard to describe.

Here is a link to a great page with a lot of the '91 Topps errors and variations.
bnorth was also telling me something about some of the backs glowing under UV and some not, but I honestly can't remember at the moment if that was just factory sets or what.

I have sorted a TON of these, and I think I am only halfway there.

...and don't forget to pick out any 1991 Topps Desert Shield cards.....they would definitely be keepers - even the commons.
