Since I had my other Gehrig question answered so fast, let me throw out a tougher question. The image below is of a Gehrig I just bought from an Auction House. They described it as a Yankees Picture Pack photo. It is blank on the back, measures about 4x6," is a crystal clear image, and came in an envelope with Lou Gehrig typed on the front. It also came with a similar picture of Frank Crosetti, also with the same envelope and his name on it.

Has anyone ever heard about a Yankees Picture Pack from the 1930's before? I 'm too lazy to look it up right now, but I believe they played together from about 1932-1939. I'm quite sure it is a Type I, and while the team *might* issue a Gehrig photo after his career as a souvenir, it doesn't make sense that they would issue a Frank Crosetti later on. He wasn't exactly a huge name.

So what do you think - remnants of a Yankees Picture Pack from the 1930's, or just original snapshots that a fan put in envelopes and typed their names on?

Likely produced from the original negatives judging by the quality, but not one-of-a-kind fan-produced snapshots, as I've had several of each (as in several identical prints of the same images). I'm not sure when they were produced, but have seen a date of 1950's given previously, and wouldn't disagree if someone suggested 1960's. This is the first time I've seen the envelopes, and would assume that is how they were issued.

Like the others from the "series" that I have had, they were shot at spring training in the 1930's, apparently over several years, and the prints issued years later (perhaps also over the course of several years, judging by back variations). As such, they would not be termed Type I's. Original would be a safer label, as they do appear to be from the original negatives. Picture Pack seems appropriate as well given the packaging you have, though that term more often brings to mind the printed picture kind rather than the true photographic prints that these are.

If you don't want the window envelope, I'd pay a couple bucks for one (I don't care which player) just to have an example on hand.

Anyone know for sure when/how these were distributed?
