I am a novice at posting images, so I am pretty shocked this actually worked. Sorry the image is a little blurry. I am a Thorpe fan, and picked up the Thorpe Olympiska Spelens postcard. I was kinda shocked at the price, especially since it was a PWCC auction. I put in a max bid and was expecting to get sniped at the last second. Several snipes did come in, but my bid held up.

...Just got the bottom one ; got the top one earlier this year ; most of the Orcajo Reds postcards are sponsored by '' Val Decker Meats''....there are a smaller number sponsored by '' Metropolitan Clothing''...the plain unadorned variety , no ad at all , is the one that gives OCD set completionistas a reason to get out of bed in the morning...

Great Thorpe "rookie". You got a great deal on that PC! Congrats!

Thanks. I remember you picking up an identical postcard a few months back. Like I said, I was expecting to get sniped out of the running. Even a low-grade Thorpe 101-5 card would be out of my price range. I know postcards aren't everyone's thing, but it is amazing to me that Thorpe postcards predating the M101-5 sell for 10-30 percent of the M101-5 card.

The one I am kicking myself over is that there was a raw, postally used (postmarked from Carlisle, Pa., no less) "Olympic Heroes" Thorpe postcard on eBay that sold for $234 a couple weeks ago. I missed it until I saw it in the sold listings. The "Olympic Heroes" postcard touts Thorpe's return to Carlisle following the Olympics and pictures him putting the shot. I thought maybe someone on here scooped it up to flip because it went so cheap. But nothing ever turned up when I asked on the B/S/T board. :)

Very nice pick-up, Ken. I saw the auction about 5 hours after it was listed and originally placed a minimum bid of $2,250 which knocked out the Buy It Now option. When I did not receive a response from the seller about the restoration work done on it, I retracted my bid so the Buy It Now reappeared. That being said, if I did not already own a copy, I would have paid the $3K as you did.

Certainly not a very popular set and in fact are stamps, not cards, but the 1944 Yankees set commemorating the 1943 world champs is one of the few color issues of the era. There was a set that had languished on BST for a while and I decided to pick it up and package it for better enjoyment. Could think of worse ways to spend a rainy Friday night.

Well, this qualifies as an August "Pickup" because I literally just picked up some cards off the floor that I didn't even know I had. Scratching around in a spare room we have which is pretty much a junk room, I found six graded cards which had fallen behind a desk and were completely forgotten about. 4 of them were not exciting. 1967 Topps football cards PSA 7 and 8 of Miller Farr, Frank Jackson, Art Powell, and Larry Elkins. I actually remember winning these cards off ebay for 99 cents each. Not sure why I wanted them, but a good price. The other two much better and have me mystified. 1913 Tom Barker game cards of Christy Mathewson and Ed Walsh. Both SGC 70/5.5. I don't remember these cards for the life of me. I assume they came from a time when I was drinking heavily. Not like yesterday, I mean REALLY heavily. Still a nice "Pickup"!

Okay, here we go again with this Monster thing. I'm going to approach this a little differently this time. Sure I will. The Monster will never see me coming. I'm going to sneak up on him all silent like. At least I can honestly say that this is the best condition Ty Cobb card I've ever owned... hands down.

Also picked up the cleanest Chase-Trophy I've ever owned. Quite happy with this pair. And now my unsigned T206 collection now stands at 20 examples. Once I had 521...

There's another one of these "F" marked cards on ebay right now, I just don't remember which card it is! Looking at my three choices on ebay, I couldn't decide, so I bought all three. Same seller, free shipping, total cost: $18.50! Can't beat that. Love the prices on these 1936 Goudey/Fine Pen cards

I finally have a new computer up and running after being with out a desktop for over 6 months after the last one crashed. I was able to lurk on the board for that time, but posting anything from my phone was sort of a pain and I certainly didn't know how to show anything from my phone. But anyway, I picked the following four cards up from The National and I just wanted to shout out a hello and thanks to all those I saw and talked to at the National. Everyone from the board is always so polite and friendly and great to talk to. I want to especially thank those board members from which I bought cards from and from those board members that I was considering buying from, but ran out of money...sorry!:( These four cards, an E98 Tenney which I just had to have another, and the 3 Turkey Reds...my new set that I'm pursuing, came from board members Michael Peich, Ed Hans, Tim Newcomb, and Gary Nuchereno.

.... I own or have owned close to a hundred of these salutation exhibits and I've seen many hundreds of others for sale , but I do not recall ever seeing a pronounced mis-cut on any exhibit card..they obviously had some pretty good quality control on the mechanical process .

..do any of you have a mis-cut 1939-46 Exhibit or recall seeing any ?

...if this were a T206 I'd be getting phone calls at three A.M. begging me to sell it.... You know who you are....

My 8th T206 card purchased just came in. Here's an image I did of the 8, including the Pastorius.

Oh, how I love Photoshop.

I also discovered I've been doing something incorrectly when scanning. I changed the sequence a little, and now the scans are perfect. No tweaking of levels needed at all. Just run the Canoscan toolbox, checkmark to show the display driver, use the recommended color settings, and click the blue scan button in the preview window. For some reason, it wasn't color adjusting correctly before. Now it's perfect every single time. So I'm basically rescanning my entire collection. :p

Bill...love your recent pickups! You have good taste, my friend! :)

Thank you, Mike. The feeling is mutual.

I'll probably go back to saving up for another month or two with some auctions coming up, then I'll be much more active working on my collection going forward. In the mean time, I'll have 3 more T206s coming in within a few days, and some cards coming in for the vintage side. Two of those are Minnie Minoso and Mark Belanger cards, cards that will be specific to a discussion I'll be starting on the All Sports Talk water cooler board. Something I've been chewing on for a while. Something they both have in common.

...lightly adhering to very thin brittle scrapbook page paper...I'll leave them as they were found except for trimming the exposed excess paper-- the backs are blank anyway...it worked out okay on the bottom two cards .. it's always nice to look at pre-war Yankees..I guess this is considered 22-year-old Scooter Rizzuto's rookie card ?

Thank you so much, Luke! You know, it felt really good to just let loose a little bit. I'm almost at the point where I can start doing some serious work on my collection, and I can't wait.

I love the cards you picked up, too. People told me that after I'd been collecting the Monster for a while, I'd start to appreciate the different backs. They were right. They add a whole other dimension to the set for me. When I got my first Polar Bear backed card, I was pretty excited, even though it certainly wasn't a hard to get back. Then I got one of the factory 649 overprints followed closely by my first Southern Leaguer, which had an Old Mill back. Now I find when I look for cards, the backs play a very big part of my decision making. I look forward to my first Sovereign, Cycle, American Beauty and EPDG-backed cards.

Made a decent dent in the "Monster"!!

The 3rd pic is all the cards stacked up and showing off some better ones.

The Raymond is a Double Name and the Batch is a miscut with another card showing at the bottom. There are some in the lot with 2 backs showing.

The Cobb and Mathewson are from individual purchases but the rest all came from the same collection.

Ok, you guys are breaking out some big guns now.

Ian, how did I not know you were collecting DSs? And autographed ones, no less? That's a pretty cool idea. The cards are just gorgeous. SOmewhat reminiscient of the Goudey cards, but with very detailed backgrounds, which I like. You need to send me some links, my friend!

Matt-I might just have to snag one of those pictures for my desktop. A little ncentive to keep hitting the set. I have a long, long way to go, and since I know there are a lot of cards from other sets I will be adding, I know it's going to be a marathon. But aren't those cards beautiful. Did you giggle like a kid when you had them all fanned out like that? They're not even my cards, and I admit I had a bit of an excited chuckle. I really love seeing stuff like this.

Chris-fantastic! Those two, especially the Cobb on shoulder, have some really nice eye appeal. Damn, you are making me want to start my Hall of Fame chase now! Congratulations!!

Dan-it's absolutely your call, but if you wash that Clarke, you've got nerves of steel. I'd be absolutely scared to death soaking a CJ, especially a '14. To be honest, I kinda like the caramel staining. It adds character to the card. And that's as strong a two as you will ever find. The centering is perfect, and the eye appeal is just beautiful. Good luck. If you decide to go ahead, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes as planned.

Joshua-you're killing me. Tell me you didn't actually pull that out of a pack. Oh, and it's a PB. That kicks the cool factor up for me. My favorite back. I love the dark blue with white lettering. Nice pick up! I want to add one of those so badly, and it has nothing to do with the demand. That's one of the coolest cards in the set.

See, guys, it's nights like this one, when I can scroll through the pickup thread, and see some really incredible pieces of history. It just makes me fall in love with our hobby all over again. Literally. We hear about the idiots like Mr. Mint, and shilling, and people trying to sell fakes. It could be easy to get discouraged. But I come here, and it's like Cher slapping me five across the eyes. "Snap out of it!"

In the grand scheme of things, when it comes to my own collection, I'm still a newborn. I'm learning how to crawl. But now I've got my big boy pants on, and I'm ready to start building. You guys inspire me. You really do. And I love seeing everybody enjoying themselves.

Bill, you make some really strong points...thanks for your input. I'm not 100% sure I'll follow through, I'm terrified of damaging the card. Also am not sure if this level of staining can be significantly improved to make it worth the risk so I definitely want to get more opinions from experienced soakers.

Absolutely. You're going about this the right way, so no matter what you ultimately decide, Dan, you'll be making an informed decision. Usually this is where I say "test this out on a common", but even a common '14 CJ is going to cost you well over a C Note, especially with the market the way it is for them now.

The only thing that gets me about soaking is that you really can't just test a small area. It's not like the label says on color safe bleach, advising you to "test a small, inconspicuous area." It's like Yoda says. "There is no try. Do, or do not." You either have to drop the card in the solution (distilled water, if I remember correctly), or not do it. The card has to lay completely flat.

Bill - yeah I was like a kid in a candy store when I got those cards. I put them all in the card savers then I cataloged them into my spreadsheets. I have a master sheet that I keep track of the date the card was purchased, the cost, where I acquired it, and the condition. Then I have subset spreadsheets that they go into (portraits, HOFers, SLers, bat showing, glove showing, baseball showing, and horizontals). There is definitely a method to my "monster" madness!!

Once I get to 450 cards I plan on putting them into binder pages so they can be enjoyed the ole fashioned way!!

Hey Bill, how you been? The "idea" to go after these was born wholly on this board. I saw some of Sean's signed Goudeys, then made a group purchase on the board about a year and half ago. "Irwin Fletcher" had an amazing collection of signed Diamond Stars for sale and I ended up snagging all but one of his HOFers (still kicking myself for passing on the one, Lloyd Waner). I have been picking them up here and there ever since, as well as other signed pre-war stuff. I think DS are perfect for autographs and given they have similar color schemes, look great displayed together. They seem to come up for sale here and there. I was very happy to score the Terry on eBay, and another board member ended up with the Waner from the same seller. I'll email you some pics (some day I'll take time to upload my cards to site)

I was about to fall asleep at my PC shortly after midnight, so I increased my already-winning max bid, confident that I would win this card! "You win some, and you lose some" - but, the losses stay with me a whole lot longer than the wins, especially when I am the first under bidder!

Jesse, did you know that before Mark Koenig played in Cincinnati, he was a member of the famed Murder's Row from the 1927 New York Yankees?

Basically, it was a combination of:

Earle Combs in center
Mark Koenig at short
Babe Ruth in right
Lou Gehrig at first
Bob Meusel in left
Tony Lazzeri at second

They had a couple guys playing catcher and third base. But that first six hitters in the lineup were just murder on opposing pitchers. The '27 Yankees were 110-44. They swept the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 in the World Series.

Great colors on that Hornsby.

No doubt! I just saw that. Some really great color, especially when you consider how long that baby has been in circulation.

Dan-I don't know if PSA is any harder on staining. But that Lajoie is incredible no matter what the grade.

CrazyDiamond-that's one of the nicest PSA 1s I've ever seen. Great eye appeal!

Thank you! Been wanting one for a while and can't afford much higher but have to say I am very happy with this one!
