I'm a bit intrigued by this set and thinking of pursuing it. I know it's black and white and maybe not the prettiest set ever, but there seems to be an artistic quality to it that I like. And there's some variations which could make it fun. I've never actually seen one in person though.

Funny thing is, the prices seem to be all over the place. Does anyone collect these? Have you noticed any trend in prices over the last few years? Are they hard to find raw or at decent prices? I read one old article in SCD by the brilliant Rich Klein that suggested they may be under-valued and then another by the equally brilliant Bob Lemke that strongly suggested they're over-valued!

Thanks for any insight!

I have a few of those but I do not collect them. I was set up at a show in North Jersey in the mid 1980's when the dealer next to me offed to trade me about 22 of them including a Wagner, Mathewson, and a Gehrig for 10 George Bell Topps rookies. I sold them over time for a lot more than I would have gotten for the Bell rookies.

Thanks for the reply. I'd say you're not alone - it would appear that no one collects them! The Edsels of baseball cards I guess.

Well, I have a complete (up to 1951) set in the original box. My father picked it up while visiting the Hall in that year. I found it in his effects after his death. From some listings on the Bay, it appears that some have placed exhorbitant values on the few cards that were issued after the first printrun, i.e., 1951-55. Maybe those are found in much fewer numbers than the first run. I agree that it is a nice little aesthetically pleasing set.

Shameless plug, we will probably have some in our next B and L auction.....if you are interested in them be on the lookout. They will be nice looking and raw.....interesting set but since they are commemorative they don't get the respect of some other sets. Still neat cards though...

Appreciate the shameless plugs. I'll keep an eye out! But I'll betcha there's one other dork out there who likes these and has deeper pockets than me - there always is!
