View Full Version : How do you Display your Tobacco card collection?

I started my T205 collection 5 years ago with just wanting 1 graded card over 100 years old. well, just could not stop after i got it. I told myself to collect the entire detroit tigers team set and maybe ty cobb some year (still dont have it). Now i am collecting all of the t205 at a slow and cheap priced rate, but still nice eye appeal on the front and hope to read the text on the back.

While collecting these cards it's sad keeping them in box, shelf, stored is safe deposit box, or other place. They should be displayed like a fine piece of art framed on the wall in a home for all to see. With UV light possibly damaging, theft, insurance, etc. it makes it unsafe and creates a dilemma on what to do.

what do you do for displaying a tobacco card collection or pre war? Would you be willing to share pictures of it?

Look forward to reading replies and viewing pics.

I display my T206 Tiger set on the wall. My cards are on the same wall as the only window so sunlight doesn't hit them.

Displays are great, here's is one of my tobacco displays. I cant stand the thoughts of locking my cards up, I need to see them to enjoy them plain and simple. I am redoing the man cave currently and when done will have 15 or so displays up throughout the room.

Very nice displays Steven and Brent.

I also think that I wouldn't be able to put the collection away and lock it up. Like you Steven, I'd want to cherish and see my hard work each and every day.

Now if you have a super rare expensive item, maybe my mind would change a little. I'd be sure to take out insurance if I kept it in my house.

Here is one of my displays. A set of 205s. It has been hanging on the wall for about ten years. Absolutely no outside light and low humidity

Matty, that's an awesome display. Even see a part of Mathewson's Big 6 game.

i like what i have seen so far and encourages me to get some art projects started this year.

Brent - i like your detroit collection and framed case. is it made so it's easy to swap graded cards out?

Steven - i have that dream for a man cave (but would need to be a loft or spare bedroom since no basements in Texas) and like how you matted the cards inside a frame for display like photographs or art. I'm thinking of doing something along those lines for each team set of T205s and a little over the top for the detroit tigers (home town team)

Matty39 - wicked how you have the t205 set and hope to join the club in 10-12 years!

seeing you guys hanging these cards makes me feel more comfortable and seems normal to do so.

Thanks and hope to see more folks post a pic of what they do.

Tim,
Yes, the door is hinged, so it's easy to switch out. This is a cheaply made one I bought off eBay about 6 years ago. I have some Penzoni cases that have the same design, with better quality.

Call me paranoid, but mine are 'displayed' in fire-proof safes.

I don't have to many, but I keep my in a vintage dental instrument file cabinet. It has thin drawers so I just display a few cards in each drawer. It's cool to pull open and see my collection.

and with no wall space partly because I have chosen to frame a few albums to view the cards/art - I had to settle on shelves. Here are a couple of them.
Great dental cabinet. Always wanted one but already have no money for more cards :-) Also a pic of how the old companies used to display their cards......

Definitly not paranoid as I own a fire proof safe as well. I can take it one step further as I have a sprinkler system installed in my house. When I bought the house, there was some rule that said new homes need a sprinkler system. Needless to say, that rule lasted a year. Im glad I have it though as it brings some peace of mind.

I also like to keep my eyes out for vintage cabinets / boxes to house cards.

shown these before, but figured I'd contribute to the thread:

Mine are stored in top loaders in a wood box. They are easy to browse through but inconspicuous.

That's sweet. Did you build that or have it built? Or did you buy from somewhere?

1880nonsports - that was interesting to use a plastic shelf cabinet to save wall space or if have no wall space! should put mirror in so you can see the back of the cards without having to handle them.

Lgarza99 - dental cabinet? never would have thought of that idea in a million years. i knew there are clever people here on how they store their treasure!

pgellis - simple black frame to display is my thought too. how do you hold the cards in the frame and what is the backing in the frame? the glass is UV reflective?

Tonyo - vintage does sound fitting way to hold and display these vintage cards. i will have to look around and see if there are any antique stores or flea markets to find something clever what you and the others.

When I do find what i am thinking of and have it on display, i will be sure to add my pics of how i display my tobacco cards.

Thanks
Tim

Tim,

My frame is a Pennzoni display case, you can check them out on their webpage.
The back is wood. There is a "groove" on each row to hold the cards in place. It isn't glass, but rather 100% UV protection acrylic.

The Pennzoni displays are great. I love my 30 card display. I may have to get another soon. My new goal is to fill one with 30 T206 portraits and another 30 card display with T206 action shots. http://www.pennzonidisplay.com/carddisplaycases.aspx

I store mine in an old binder. If they are in slabs I break them out. Even the autographs, Cobb's, Young's, Doyle (with part of NY NAT'L showing), Lenox's, etc. etc.

To say some of your setups is inspiring would be an understatement! I have very few, but I am in love with them. Here they are in cubbies:

http://mycollectionofcards.com/baseballcards/031120/ns28.jpg

These are now in a similar setup, even with a similar tin, and most all of the cards in the set can now be seen.

http://mycollectionofcards.com/baseballcards/031120/goodwins.jpg

Truth be told, the tins aren't what they came in, but they were the same time period, so until I find "proper" boxes to display with them, these should do. Heck, kids back then would have used these tins to store their cards, right? :)

Ever since SGC changed their label to giant font size lettering it's made me not want to pick up any new T206s for my display because it ruins the uniformity...come on SGC reduce the font size, it looks comical.

Bill Brown,

I love how you have displayed your T206 collection by sub-collections! HoFers, Southern Leaguers, even the Horizontals!! Loved it. I did that with my HoFers, but a case of my SLs would be pretty sparce so far (7 of 48).
