Posting this on its own so that more people can see it instead of potentially missing it at the end of an old thread.

Ex-rapper sings the blues in court
Clifton Park man admits failure to pay state income taxes for three years

A rapper from the 1990s hip-hop group 3rd Bass — which briefly grabbed fame with its 1991 chart-topping hit "Pop Goes the Weasel!" — pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Albany County Court to failure to pay state income taxes.

Peter Nash, whose stage name was "Prime Minister Pete Nice," did not pay taxes in 2009, 2010 and 2011, the Albany County District Attorney's Office said.

Nash, who lives in Clifton Park, must pay $13,101 to the state in back taxes, penalties and interest. He will also be on probation for three years, the district attorney's office said.

Nash pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal tax fraud. He will be sentenced on Aug. 26.

Nash and 3rd Bass released three albums between 1989 and 1991, two of which went gold. "Pop Goes the Weasel!" reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard rap charts.

The song assailed rapper Vanilla Ice.

After retiring from rapping, Nash became a baseball historian, opened a memorabilia shop in Cooperstown and published a baseball book.

Financial troubles surrounded his ventures, however.

Earlier this year, a New Jersey judge ordered Nash to pay $260,000 to an auction house as part of a protracted legal battle.

Good call to post a new thread - I dug up the old one originally since I wasn't sure if this had enough legs on its own for a new thread. What was I thinking?!?

Ole Pete looks pretty good in a suit and tie. Hopefully we will eventually see him in a nice, well fitting, orange jumpsuit.

The fact that this guy runs a website dedicated to the "wide ranging problems of fraud and corruption in the baseball collectibles and auction industries" just blows my mind... the absurdity of it all is just too much to comprehend.

I think he looks like the long lost Blues Brother.

I live near Albany and saw this on the news but I didn't know his connection to our hobby. I don't normally root for the taxman but in this case a tip 'o the cap!

So excuse my ignorance, but if he only has to pay $13K in back taxes for not paying 3 years of taxes, what really is the punishment?

or has that not been set yet?

(oh just re-read it now, the 13K includes penalties)

still seems like not much money for missing 3 years of taxes.

Failure to file is a misdemeanor. Actual tax fraud is a felony.

It is state taxes. In Texas that would be a lot :)

So if you're going to commit tax fraud, better not to file at all. :D

He looks like Flounder from Animal House about to throw up on Dean Wormer!

True, very true. :)

I would assume that this would actually be bad news to Nash's creditors and people with outstanding judgments against Nash, since the government is typically first in line to collect. Right?

What, nobody wants to see the "Pop goes the weasel" video? Yeah, admit it, you're going to tell everyone you didn't care about it but you're going to watch it anyway.... :p
