When I'm asked to see some of our real old ball cards. These stun those unfamiliar with the hobby more than any other Issue, ghost, freak, scrap etc (those are our masterpieces, exclusively). I know it's a rehash. But we're adding fresh collectors daily. Post your Old Judge!

The narcissist and some say justifiably so, Tony Mullane;

Yes, I'm still looking for a Wise-Washington OJ, as well as Morrill-Washington. As you know, both of these players are relatively easy to find with Boston, but quite tough to find with Washington. I'm not picky about condition (hint, hint!).

So much eye candy, I love it!! Nice Ewing Jay. I was surprised to see an 1887 version of Ewing surface when none had been documented for so long. We knew he was photographed in 1887, but no N172 to show for it.

I will post some of my favorite Detroit cards when I have time to do them justice (new scanner). In the meantime, I will post a recent N172 pick-up of mine that was previously only known as an N173 (locked up in the Wharton-Tigar collection at the British Museum). It is an ugly card but the only known copy of this pose as an N172 (although I'm sure there are others). Beatin played on the 1887 Detroit Wolverine team so I collect him even though he was not issued a card with Detroit. My expectation of actually checking this pose off my want list was nil to none.

I would agree that pose 3 (Stooping to field grounder) is his toughest as it was only issued in 1888. All his other poses were either issued in both 1888 and 1889 or just 1889 with the 1889 cards being more common than the 1888 examples. Nice card.

Jay:

Did John Dreker put you up to asking that question? He'll never let me live that down. I saw a Taylor Shafer once at a Fort Washington show, but by the time I got back to the seller who had it you had already bought it! :( So, if you ever want to sell it...

Wow, guys! I love that Visner card...that is freaking great.

John:

That particular Visner has one of the best pictures I have ever seen on an Old Judge card. The scan doesn't do it justice. Brooklyn had those god-awful uniforms that looked like graph paper and you can see the lines in his shirt and pants. I had zero interest in him as a player, but when I saw the image I just had to have it. It also helped that it looks like someone just stole his beer money! :D

This is one of the most interesting Old Judges I have ever found. As most/some of you know, sheets of Old Judges were made by rephotographing cabinet size photographs produced from glass plate negatives. If you look closely at the bottom of this card you will see the words "OLD JUDGE CIGARETTES". Those words, in that format, are not found on any N172. The only place to find that line is on the mount of an Old Judge cabinet. Thus, when making this card (and possibly the sheet it came from, Old Judge cabinets were used to provide cabinet sized images, instead of just albumen photograph prints.

Extremely cool card Jay, thanks for sharing. Have you ever seen another one, same pose or otherwise? When the card maker compiled a matrix of 24 cabinet sized images I suspect the photos were rarely mounted on full size cabinet mount as they needed to be trimmed down so as to not affect the neighboring cards. But to see your Weber with the OLD JUDGE mount at least partially present, what a treat.

Jay,

If you're still following this thread I had a quick question -

Where in the "OJ spectrum" of "hard to get" would you rate the Phenomenal Smith portrait card? How does this card rate in the order of "rarity" when compared to the spotted ties?

Thanks!

oldjudge
07-13-2014, 05:21 PM
Hi Fred! The Phenominal Smith portrait is a very scarce card, as scarce or scarcer than most of the spotted ties, possibly with the exceptions of Behel and Brady. It is scarcer than all of the Connor, Gerhardt, Kelly, Welch, Esterbrook, Orr, and Lynch script cards (one Lynch script pose may be as scarce). Unfortunately, it also tends to come with a light photo.

Pink Rusie (Pitcher) and Buckley (Catcher).............love knowing that both played together in Indianapolis and that both cards have a pink tint.

"Amos Rusie threw so hard, many fans swore they couldn’t see the ball when it left his hand. Experts believe he could “bring it” at 100mph–and that he routinely threw in the high 90s. His catcher, Dick Buckley, under his glove, placed a thin strip of lead covered in a handkerchief, and added a sponge in order to avoid breaking bones in his hand. Rusie threw so hard–and was so wild–that batters were afraid to “stand in” the batter’s box against him. He was the largest reason that Major League baseball, prior to the 1893 season, moved the pitching distance back from 50′ to 60′ 6″. This rule change was the beginning of the “modern game” of baseball." From http://fromdeeprightfield.com/amos-rusie-the-pitcher-who-changed-the-game/

So many nice cards in this thread, I wanted to contribute with a little Detroit flavor. The first post is dedicated to the 1887 issue, Detroit's World Championship season. The manager Watkins and eight players would be issued a total of 28 poses and I'm complete at 28 of 28. The following are some of my favored poses with one example of each subject matter that was issued a card.

The 1887 cards were photographed at Gray Studio with the stadium backdrop. I personally like the design of the 1887 cards with what my friend Bill Phippen calls the "Hot Dog style OJ advertisement".

Joe_G.
07-24-2014, 11:05 PM
1888, a year in which Goodwin & Co. would add several key Detroit players that were inexplicably missed in 1887 including two of my favorites; Lady Baldwin & Deacon White. These photos all originate from Fearnaught studio with a plain backdrop. It should be noted that many of the 1887 Detroit poses would also be re-issued in 1888 but I’m only showing the new for 1888 players.

1888 cards are much tougher than 1887 and I’m only 50% complete on the 30 Detroit poses. Among them is the only Detroit player I still need, Barney Gilligan. I look forward to the day that I can add Gilligan to complete a Detroit player run.

Joe_G.
07-24-2014, 11:06 PM
1889, NL Wolverines have now disbanded but professional baseball remains in Detroit thanks to the International Association. All the Detroit players are merely team change cards that were issued previously by Goodwin & Co. Detroit would take top honors in the IA in 1889. On a side note, the Kid Baldwin card is an error and should have never been issued with Detroit.

The 1889 cards are not as difficult as the 1888 issue but can pose a modest challenge. I still need a couple poses out of 14 possible to be complete.

I actually like the sepia color. It's what one gets accustomed to when looking at a lot of old photographs. The true black and white actually looks a little weird to me.
