The following is a piece I put together on James "Tip" O'Neill. The right-handed pitcher/outfielder major league ball from 1883-1892, and in 1887 put together an offensive season for the ages.

Nice article you've written there.

Over the years I've owned a few Tip O'Neill cards. Don't own any now, but at some point I know I'll put together a player collection of him.

Cheers,

Richard.

Wow, GREAT group of cards, Jay.

Is Tip wearing a breathe right in on that Buchner? ;)

Richard.

Great cards, and glad to see you enjoyed the article. The plan is to add 2-3 per week to the site.

Very cool story. I was always curious about him. Wasn't his average much higher at the time (based on the way it was calculated)?

In 1887 baseball chose to count Walks as both hits and at-bats. As a general rule though, most baseball encyclopedia/database sources use the standard/current method of calculation. The .435 O'Neill posted was his true batting average based on current standards.

Nice article. I once had a Tip O'Neill card but sold it a while back.
