This oversized panoramic postcard depicts the Chicago Union Giants and the Daggett, Michigan baseball team at a September 6, 1911 contest in Daggett. The Union Giants wear jerseys reading "Peters" because Williams S. Peters owned the club. A friend's great research yielded the following identifications: Robert Gilkerson, who would buy the team in 1917 (2b, far left); Sam Gordon (c, second from left); Horace Jenkins (rf, third from left); Haywood "Kissing Bug" Rose (1b, fourth from right) Albert Toney (ss, second from right); James Harvey (p/rf, far right). The other players likely include Guy Jackson (3b); Mack Ramsey (lf), Ed Lee (cf), and Alexander (p). I will post more identifications as they come. The high school graduate is a Clemente fan - sorry it isn't per-war - so I bought him this 1959 card. The soon-to-be-former-8th grader is more of a pre-war kinda guy, so I bought him his first Greenberg; not great condition, but a big head. (Thanks Tony!)

After getting my first red border in REA, I've decided to collect Series 4 and 6. My wife's family is from the area making this the only way she would agree to me collecting more tobacco cards. (She's in medical school and hates tobacco, she told me my OJs were okay, but other sets)

I was also able to pick up 2 Cleveland and 1 Cincinnati OJ for my Ohio subset. Really happy with the Twitchell. Its near the top of my favorites list for this subset.

Enjoy!!

Awesome Ed! Keep it up! That card is in fantastic shape, too!! That would look great in any collection, but looks the best in yours! I don't know the full story, but do you think almost all T206 in the checklist will have this back? And is there only a sole copy of each in existence, or have you stumbled across duplicates?

I think I can speak for all of us when I say, yours is probably the most challenging set-build I know of! We all know of Uzits and Hindus being rare/tough backs, but yours must be the toughest around!

A big score for me, a nice lot of 21 OJs.

All the cards, except one, have "C W CHURCH." stamped on the back. It would be interesting to know how substantial the collection was at one time. Almost all the cards date to 1889. Appears to be a collection that has stood together for many, many years. Most of the cards have outstanding photo quality. A nice grouping of OJs.

Greg-that Keeler is beautiful! That's one of my favorite portraits from the set.

Ed-that Cy Young is magnificent, and I'm so glad you got it back. I love your project. I keep my eyes open for the Howe McCormick back stamp whenever I'm looking at T206 cards on Ebay.

Joe-you're not kidding about the photo quality. Those Old Judges are spectacular!

I, for one, would like to see a different qualifier for baseball cards that exhibit stamps. The "MK" designation is seen as a negative, something that lowers the overall value of a card. I find the stamps that are seen in Ed's collection, and on the back of Joe's OJ collection, as enhancements. I think they add character to the cards, and exhibit a little clue about the card's history. Let the buyer decide if the stamp qualifier adds to or detracts from the card's beauty.

I think it would be really cool if when you completed this unique collection you went to the residence of 500 W. Main St., Gainesville, Fla and showed the current resident your collection or an even cooler idea would be to track down the descendants of Howe and show them their great grandfathers collection.

Really cool idea for a collection, I'll keep a lookout for those stamps!

Wood and Johnson? There has to be a joke in there somewhere. :p

In the school system there is a nationally normed academic test called the Woodcock-Johnson that we use quite often to help determine student progress and for ESE eligibility. We definitely get a lot of strange looks when we discuss the results of that test.

That's a good point. Well, regardless I guess when the time feels right. 256 already sounds like an impressive number to me. It would be cool to track down Howe's descendants and maybe have them dig up a photo of their ancestor so we can have a face to this early collector.

This collection truly fascinates me. I feel this collection could go in a museum.

... and I'm guessing they conduct the tests at Bushwood Country Club? Funny thing is, I'm sure those names were totally reasonable before American slang hijacked them. I think Clarke is safe for now, but you never know!

Got this T206 Dunn today with a split front. Can't tell if the bottom player is also Dunn, because the background is yellow, but that could be from a color shift. I believe there is a Dunn split front out there that is him on both sides. The yellow in the bottom is a lot easier to see in person, not sure why it is barely showing up in the scan. Must be something with my settings

Ian, I really love your recent acquisitions. The diversity in your collection really knocks my socks off, my friend. You're doing exactly what I plan on doing. I especially love the Rajah and the O'Rourke. I can't remember, but is that your first OJ?

When Joe posted his OJ collection pick ups, I started looking at them seriously for the first time. I'd like to get one here before the year is out, but there's a lot of other things I want first.

Yeah 'Stache the colors are pretty striking..the old candy/tobacco cards are just so unique compared to the cards I grew up collecting from the 80/90s. Who said you need a hologram or lots of shiny foil or "1 of 50000" stamped on your card to make it something beautiful and special. I've also been blown away by some of the deeper and more vibrant vintage cards that appear as though they have never seen the light of day. Pretty cool stuff!!

Bill: This quick'n'dirty snapshot ought to give you an idea of the difference in size. (Didn't have a regular T200 Boston so used a Washington team card instead. Maybe somebody can post one so we can inspect for differences in the image). You can see that the premium is quite large. It measures approximately 18-1/2"x10-1/2"; the edges were a bit rough and are matted out so I can't be more precise. That's a Moose Skowron autographed baseball to give a scale to the photo.

Most of the time, you start a project and it turns out to be harder than it seems like it should be. Given that I almost never get access to Old Judges, I figured a Billy Sunday run would take me a very long time. I have always thought Sunday, who became really the first major national evangelist and was a major voice in the ratification of prohibition (sorry about that). Anyway I picked one up in an auction a couple of years back and decided I would put together a run. Jay really helped me out, and i picked up a couple of others. The last one I needed came up in an auction just recently. In fact, it came up in two auctions at the same time so I felt like I got a good buy. I will probably upgrade the Chicago with bat eventually, but just finished up my run in a little over a year without really feeling like I paid too much for any of the bunch.

I haven't had much luck scanning lately. How do I make my scans larger?

If you create the scan somewhere between 270-320K, Net54 will upload it fairly large. Anything bigger than that gets rejected, and smaller files become...smaller.

Scott- I'm at 300 now, but my images transfer to Net 54 small. I'm a dinosaur with these operations. My process is preview, next I size the image with the box, then scan. With my old scanner, I didn't have to attempt the sizing thing. Maybe that is my issue.

Nothing crazy like some of the incredible pickups you guys have had thus far this month, but I unknowingly picked up a T206 color variation of Harry Gasper. From what I've seen on ebay and other cards posted online, yellow seems to be the standard color and orange is a "rarer" color variation. Didn't notice it until I picked up the polar bear back. I don't have the greatest scanner, but seeing them next to each other in person there is definitely a difference.

Well, I haven't posted a pic here in a while and I am too stupid to do it apparently. Anyway I bought a used book off Amazon for a penny and 3.99 shipping. "Shades of Glory - The Negro Leagues and the History of African-American Baseball". I open it up and discover it is an ex-library book and is signed by two Negro League players. Robert Scott and Pedro Sierra. Pretty cool surprise. I think Robert Scott was maybe on Ken Burn's "Baseball"? I saw him somewhere. Sierra emigrated from Cuba and signed at age 16. Anyway an unexpected surprise for used book.

Picked up a copy of the August 30, 1862 Wilkes' Spirit of the Times newspaper on Ebay. In there is an article and box score of an August 20 game pitting the St George Cricket Club vs the Boston club. Playing for SG were George and Harry Wright and Jim Creighton. Harry and Creighton bowled for SG as they defeated Boston. Less than two months later Creighton was dead. The full newspaper is intact. Not a bad buy for $10.

Thanks for the big picture. I guess you can tell the card is darker because the blackout on the SGC holder looks a little faded too in the picture, but obviously it isn't. My dad looked at it next to another of the same variation and couldn't believe how much better/clearer everything was and the other one I used to compare was the nicest one I could find.

Posted this in another thread, but thought it should go here as well. 1934 Butterfinger Lou Gehrig. Got to love the condition of the base he's standing on.

My very first Gehrig of any kind. Got it from a guy who has about half the set in similar condition. I grabbed this first and may go back for the rest. I just can't decide if it's worth it to work on this set. It seems to get the short straw amongst collectors since they aren't "Cards" in the purest form.

So I'm still not sure if this will stay in my collection or not.

Picked this one up off of eBay for under $15.00.

Great photo content of a true Giant!

Always loved this one and it's a beauty. Congrats and I think it's a keeper!

The Butterfinger Gehrig reminded me how difficult it is to get an nice, affordable Gehrig or a Ruth card from their playing days. Sometimes we go to extraordinary lengths.

This 1927 W560 sheet came in the mail today.

Best regards,

Joe

Its been a very quiet month for me. I basically haven't purchased anything for my set but it wasn't like I tried. I was close on a few and very sad I lost out on a Gehrig for my set. Oh well the search goes on. Anyway the other night I completed a deal on here with baez578. I know its only a 4 but will def upgrade down the line.

(1) 1911 Ty Cobb real photo postcard batting against Wilkes-Barre Barons at Boulevard Park.

(2) 1912 Cy Young real photo postcard with unidentified team. This is one of the last images of him in a major league uniform before he effectively retired after arm trouble prevented him from taking the mound in Pittsburgh on May 23 in what would have been his first 1912 appearance.

(3) 1910 real photo postcard of the Wilkes Barre Barons at Boulevard Park.

Cy looks like the "Spaghetti Monster" from "True Detective."

That Cy Young card could be with the Rochester, MN team, since here's a postcard of that team (Wisconsin-Minnesota League), with the photo by Young:

And here's one member of the team on his own PC:

Thanks for the suggestion, Robert. I suspect they're different teams because mine has a different R on the uniform and a K on the sleeve. As well, the Braves trained in Augusta, GA starting in March or so and opened their season on April 11 in Boston, making it unlikely they would have crossed paths with a Minnesota team.

As the subject says - some pickups from earlier this year, recently back from SGC with the interim flip.

Some of these Recruits are tough in grades above 40/50... some not so much.

Nice cards, Brian!

Good to see there was at least a little T207 love, even if late in the month.
