So I finally purchased my first 1952 Topps Mantle about a week ago and I have to say, I'm really happy I waited till I saw a very nice and presentable Mantle in my price range.

The card is graded by SGC (Auth) and says (Altered) on the label.

My question is: What is the alteration that was made to the card?

I looked at the SGC's grading scale on their website but still couldn't
narrow down an answer. If it was "trimmed" or "recolored" the site
says there should be a two letter/# code on the label.

Can anyone suggest what has been done to this beside the glue marks on the back side.

Thanks.

It is very difficult to tell from the pictures what is wrong with the card. One of my 52 Topps cards is trimmed and was graded SGC A without any identifying information on the label. It is very difficult to discern the trim, but it is there. I have a couple of cards that were glued to albums and subsequently removed that received authentic grades from PSA--not sure if it was the fact it was removed from the scrapbook or the resulting paper loss that caused the grade. If you post some larger pictures on the post-war side, you may get some better insight.

I'd guess that it's trimmed. The corners look particularly sharp and the auction description describes the card as a couple of "hairs" short.

The right side could be trimmed. Look at the lower right corner.

I definitely noticed the trimmed corner, I just wonder why SGC didn't label the card the way their scale display's codes on certain no grades, kinda leaves (altered) wide open.

Or does (altered) signify multiple alterations?

I still love the card for the card not the holder, just wish they would have labeled it as "trimmed" if that was the only alteration.

When they slab it it just gets "A" When you have them not slab it there's a slip that shows what the problems was, and usually where.

This one is fine, but the cuts top and bottom are too rough to get a number grade.

Looking at the Mantle on the auction site it looks like maybe a couple corners and part of the right side were rebuilt or resurfaced. Why whoever did it didn't do the patch of paperloss center right edge is a puzzle.

It's a nice looking card either way.

Not too shabby there...nicely centered piece. I am only assuming becasue of its paper loss, that SGC would just gave it 'A' .
Theres a nice one coming up very soon (sorry not outing the auction, find it yourself) ...PSA A (altered) and its about as centered. Trying to figure what 'altered' was designated for??
Says 1 spot on back, which is obvious. Too bad, that i already have this version, otherwise i be glued to this one.

Wow, thats a amazing looking "Authentic"!

I might have to track it down and take a shot at it.

Does the auction house's name sound like Maraitage? lol

Very nice card though.
