View Full Version : Post your 5 favorite cards that you own

Luke
04-24-2014, 02:35 PM
I was looking through the archive at a cool thread where people post their 5 favorite cards of all time and decided to start this one. I have a tendency to focus more on the cards I want (but don't yet own) than the ones already in my collection. So post the 5 (or so) cards in your collection that are your favorite as of today. I couldn't pick 5, so I'm posting 6 :D

Man, five is tough. So since you posted six, I'll play copy cat. :)

The first five, and one that should have made it six. Hard to believe old Cy didn't make the cut for the initial HOF class.

I've received several emails from Net54ers asking me if I really "paid a penny" for my 1952 Topps Mantle (Post #17). So, here is my response to anyone here interested.......
I was 14 years old in the Fall of '52. Since the Spring of '52, I had acquired 100's of 52T cards (spent a lot of nickels buying 5-cent wax packs, traded a lot, and won a lot
of cards while flipping).

And yes, I was very fortunate. My folks stored my original cards (1947-1952) while I was away 4 years in the Air Force. Included in the 5-cent pack with Mantle were these
four Hi #s......

I think you need to get rid of that '37 Williams/San Diego, Derek (drool)! Where in the world did you find that one???

Sorry, no scanner yet (Michigan's economy sucks for an attorney primarily dealing with lay clients!), but at the moment, I would list these which I have:

1. 1907 Dietsch Fielding Pose Cobb
2. 1923 Lections Ruth
3. 1931-32 Exhibits Ruth (from the movie stars set)
4. 1955 Exhibits Postcard Back Mantle
5. 1947 Tip-Top Kiner (a hero of mine since I was about 11);

and one I would really like to acquire in any kind of decent shape:

1. 1939 R303 Goudey Premium Ted Williams

Some really fantastic cards, gentlemen!

Happy collecting,

Larry

Well, for me, a card's value really doesn't factor into how much I like it. Some of the cards I love most didn't cost me more than $30 or $40. And some of them were gifted to me, like my first T202 below from Pete, and my 1933 Goudey Al Simmons from Kenny. Those mean more to me than any $40,000 card ever could because of the kindness associated with them. It doesn't mean I won't buy and enjoy expensive pre-war cards, because some of the cards I really want are quite costly. But cost alone never factors into what I buy. A card either speaks to me, or it doesn't. A rare Babe Ruth rookie might go for several hundred thousand dollars. But I'd rather have a 1933 Goudey Ruth, or an Exhibits Ruth any day of the week. Besides, all my expensive cards are modern, so I'm not going to post them here, anyway. :p Thankfully, however, it looks like I'm back in pretty good health, all my bills are paid, and my savings are back to where I want them. So, I can start buying the cards I really want again. I'm footloose and fancy free.

For now, here are my favorite cards. I couldn't just pick 5. Sorry. :D

I am like Stache, my favorites are my favorites due to my love of the hobby and the memories it gives me from my childhood or my son.

"Keating Candy" Eddie Collins: Inspired by my son and my collection of 1919 Black Sox.
<a href="http://s209.photobucket.com/user/TopekaPalms/media/CollinsFront_zps846516c2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/TopekaPalms/CollinsFront_zps846516c2.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo CollinsFront_zps846516c2.jpg"/></a>

T205 Cicotte: Also inspired by our 1919 Black Sox collection
<a href="http://s209.photobucket.com/user/TopekaPalms/media/cicotte_zps233f06f9.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/TopekaPalms/cicotte_zps233f06f9.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo cicotte_zps233f06f9.jpg"/></a>

E121 Harry Hooper
<a href="http://s209.photobucket.com/user/TopekaPalms/media/002_zps7292e1cb.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/TopekaPalms/002_zps7292e1cb.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 002_zps7292e1cb.jpg"/></a>

E102 Otto Knabe: I bought this card as pre teen. Didnt know what the heck it was, just that it looked like a T-Card. I didnt find out what it was until 2011 when i got back into cards and found out it is kind of rare.
<a href="http://s209.photobucket.com/user/TopekaPalms/media/OttoKnabe_zpsfc90bda0.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/TopekaPalms/OttoKnabe_zpsfc90bda0.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo OttoKnabe_zpsfc90bda0.jpg"/></a>

Another "find" when i got back into collecting. Brooks was one of my top 3 favs of all time and i bought this as a pre teen. When i got back into cards in 2011, i noticed it was in incredible condition. BTW, if i sent this to SGC, what would it grade out as in your opinion?
<a href="http://s209.photobucket.com/user/TopekaPalms/media/001_zpsa49b182b.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb212/TopekaPalms/001_zpsa49b182b.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 001_zpsa49b182b.jpg"/></a>

BONUS:
THis is my all time favorite card. Reason is, i did not have much time with my Grandpa on my Mothers side, as he lived about an hour away, and when we did visit, he was so busy with his work. He was a "grumpy ole fart" and kind of scared me even. But one day, he needed to go to the store (small town on New Strawn, Ks.) and he asked me to come along. I was scared, but really wanted a pack of cards, so i asked. He actually said YES!!! This card, with the "cool" look that stuck in my head was in it. I will always treasure this card because of the story :-)

Absolutely astounding cards everyone. I especially like the stories behind *why* some cards make the top 5.

No real stories behind any of mine, I don't think. And I'm glad to see Gibson made it into the top 5s of a couple of other collectors on the board. Those cards would reside in my top 5, too, if I owned them!

And with that, I humbly present my top 5:

<img width="300" src="http://www.collectorfocus.com/images/show/georgegibson/baseball-cards/12142/1913-voskamps-coffee" />

I'm not opposed to that position, Bill. My first Kiner Tip-Top is in poor condition, but pre-internet, took me nearly 15 years to find. Cost: $26.00 My '47 Tip-Top Johnny Mize is also a favorite, because he is such an underrated slugger, and had such a great year: 51 HR (tying Kiner), 138 RBI, .302 and 137 runs scored). That card is also in poor condition, and cost me $48.00. As you might have noticed, I like the stars and HOF'ers from the 1947 Tip-Top set. I also have a 1921 Exhibits Hornsby, where the pic just captures his essence in PSA Ex--cost: $450, about a decade ago.

Highest regards,

Larry

Great stuff everyone; thanks for sharing.

1) N162 Keefe & N43 Ewing are so detailed and vibrant
2) T202 Infield & Tinker/Evers/Chance use amazing action shots and drawings to present multiple players (mostly HoFers) from the same infields
3) W501 Southworth shows the father-son connection on a diamond and warms my soul
4) 61' Snider & 73' Mays were acquired by me via a trade with a classmate when I was 12 in 1998. They were my first non-modern cards.

I really like the Detroit Free Press Cobb.

I agree! It's such a unique expression to see on Cobb's face -- not only a smile, but what looks like genuine... joy? It's rare to see thsi expression on a person who was supposedly tormented by so many demons. I wonder if the photographer cracked a joke or did something funny to get such a reaction from the Georgia Peach. Great piece!

For me (most of us actually:D) choosing 5 or even 6 is pretty tough/

Here are my current top tier faves:

Larry

Larry, there's very definitely something to be said for the purchases made before Ebay, comc.com and the internet in general. It's pretty easy to get what we want now with a little patience and enough funds.

As for Kiner, Ralph has long been one of my favorite players. I cried when he died the same way I cried when Stan Musial died. Ralph was a gentleman, and the way he abused the baseball was something I've not seen in my lifetime as an adult (at least, not without some "help" from certain medications).

In fact, the first vintage graded card I bought was his 1953 Bowman Color:

http://imageshack.com/a/img28/4273/7kir.png

Eventually, I'll buy another example, with a little better centering, and maybe in a little better condition. But I don't see this one ever leaving my collection. It only cost between $50 and $60, but I can't tell you how many times I've spent staring at the card front wishing I could jump back in time. Those old time unis, the old stadiums. Baseball when it was still the game to the majority of Americans. I realize now that the NFL might be considered the king of the hill. Good for them. I love football, and I am a real die hard Green Bay Packers fan. But I will never love football the way I have loved, and will love baseball. On my death bed, I suppose I'll tell my wife and kids (if I end up having any) that I love them. But the last thing I'll ever utter will be "how'd the Brewers do today?" :p

The Tip Top Bread cards are wonderful. You have good taste. I love the color in my T206 cards, but there's something to be said about the simplicity of a great black & white picture with minimal typography to take away from the subject. I'm totally in love with the Exhibits cards, the old b&w postcards, and some of the b&w M101-5 Joe Jackson cards. Sometimes, especially when it comes to baseball cards, less is definitely more. The '53 Bowman Color set is my favorite vintage set. Nothing but history on the front of those cards.

Here's five of my finest!

Jeff, I never get tired of seeing the pieces in your collection.

What an absolute privilege, everybody, to see some of the favorite pieces from your collections. I am awed, and inspired, by what I have seen.

Please, by all means, keep sharing. I don't think anybody will be too upset if you extend beyond 5 or 10 cards by a few. :D

I have two lists of six favorites (keeping up with the OP).
My first six cards are from today's perspective. The second six cards are from my childhood (none are the actual cards from my childhood, just ones I picked up off of ebay).

1985 Topps McGwire was the first single card I ever bought. Ironically, when I bought one in 1987 I paid $20 & the graded example I own today I paid around half of that.

My parents bought me a box of Upper Deck in 1990 and I was allowed to open one pack each morning in December. One day before school I pulled an Auto Reggie Jackson. I ended up trading it to a local dealer for $300 or $500 worth of anything in his store. I would love to know the per pack odds of getting this card since they must have made hundreds of thousands of packs (or more!) and only 2500 Reggie's.

When my buddy first got me into cards in 1990 he took me to his aunts house who used to stockpile boxes of wax from the 80's. Canseco was still pretty huge at the time and this lady had two boxes of '86 DonRuss, so I bought both of them from her (think I paid $75-$80) hoping to hit a Canseco and Maybe a McGriff or Fielder Rated Rookie. It got down to the final 4 packs of the first box before my buddy (I let him bust the packs with me) finally pulled the Canseco and hit the McGriff in the same pack!

Of course I was elated, so I told him he could have the last three packs....of course, 2nd to last pack, Canseco #2! He ended up trading me an extra 86-87 Fleer Patrick Ewing to keep the Canseco, lol! Sold the other box of DonRuss to a dealer at a show the next weekend, which paid for both boxes and then some, and picked up two '89 UD Griffey Jr.'s and a 1990 Thomas Leaf that weekend. Suffice it to say I was hooked! I ended up trading that Canseco, at least one of those Griffeys and I want to say around $180 for a raw Jordan RC which ended up grading BGS 8.5 (with two 9.5 subs). Sorry, just a cool memory that I hadn't thought about in a long, long time. Hard to believe that was 25 years ago.

Nice HOF style collection!
Are you intentionally also doing it 'type' card style, so that you don't repeat any issues across your collection?
And if so, was it a big decision to go 51' Mays and 52' Mantle? :p

If only I were that organized!;)
Not any specific type of collector.. I more or less just go for stuff that I like, and exclude nothing based on "rules". The cards posted are an accumulation over the years, first pick up being the Aaron around 1999-2000. (though there has been a spurt over the past 12-16 mths)

Bill/Dan- thanks both... And Mr Mays will always be in my top 5 Dan.

My absolute favorite card does not have much monetary value, but its sentimental value makes it priceless to me.

This Mark "The Bird" Fidrych rookie card was inside one of the first packs I ever opened. That alone would make it special, but my Mom also held onto it when I moved out of the house, keeping it in her very small, private collection for 22 years, and then it was passed back to me after she died in 2010.

Really like the stories by all. I miss the real card shows that we use to have here in the Kentucky area, circa 80's-early 90's. There were 4-5 50+ dealer shows a year. Too many stories to tell from those, but all good times.
