I've been cleaning out some of my stuff in storage and found a box of cards. Most of the cards are newer junk but I did come across this pack that I forgot I had.

Is it possible to tell if this pack could have once contained a card? The tax stamp is 1909 but I believe they were still using this stamp in later years?

I wonder how the cigarettes would smoke...

Can you see a stamped overprint exact date on the tax stamp? That is part of the way to tell if it could have held a card. I don't think there is any positive way to tell other than pulling a card out of the pack. But the date will tell us if it possibly held one.

I can't really make out the month but I do see: 12, 1911

Then all you have to do is check the factory and dist numbers to see if cards were put out in 1911, from there, and that will answer whether a card could have come in the pack. Most likely the answer is yes, one could have. That also makes the pack a little more valuable. One's without the overprint dates are less valuable.

How about I meet you in New Orleans and we can pass it back and forth?

Better yet... you get some 100 year old Scotch and I'll bring the 100 year old cigs.

Jon Canfield has a website with excellent information regarding which packs once contained baseball cards at:

http://www.baseballandtobacco.com/

If I am reading his chart correctly on the Code Information page (1911 Sweet Caporal, Factory 42, District 4, NC), your Sweet Caporal pack once held a T205 card :)

Better go to Colorado or Washington, people might get the wrong idea and call the cops!!

Month ending in 'e' would have to be June. Neat pack!

Very interesting website. Thanks!

I'm reading the chart the same as you. It looks like it could have possibly held a T205... but I also see it could possibly have held a T206 SC 350/460 series.

Ah, you're right. I should have kept looking down the column, but stopped when I found the first match :o

They might call but they wouldn't come. This is New Orleans.
