'Cause it's midnight somewhere.

This card was a whale for me, in that I searched longer for one of these bad boys than any other card. Deep thanks to a couple board members for helping track this down. When guys who can pretty much locate any card out there have trouble turning up a card, you know it's tough.

Sweet Joe Jax Matt.

This one's been on my want list for a while (IMO the best looking Cy).. and I went after this one on Goodwin. Tried to wait up for it, but that auction went loooooong. Happy to see I had it in AM, and for an increment less than my max bid.

I'm not sure if this is April Fool's or you guys are just adding some phenomenal cards. I'm guessing it's the latter. Great cards!

That is one of, if not "the," best looking Young cards.

And there are never really any words for a Ruth RC. That's a watershed moment for a collection. As the true RC of the game's biggest name, it should only keep growing in stature and value as it approaches its 100th BIRTHDAY!

WAIT, Tony, the centering on that card is INSANE. I such a tremendous fan of that exact card. Great eye.

Dds,

Thanks, brutha. Once you put a target on the Shoeless CJ, it starts growing in your mind-- you start perusing VCP, realizing how tough it is to find a nice affordable one, and then the hunt is on. Becomes very satisfying when you reel it in. It's a card that doesn't give itself up easy, and like a great woman it is thus one you keep for good!

I can vouch for my Standard Biscuit Joe Jackson, it's not an April Fools prank, although it may have appeared that way with some of the great pickups so far.

I made the deal through a private transaction, hopefully Joe T can chime in, validate my claim.

Great cards so far, the Ruth RC, and the CJ Joe Jax are awesome. Tough to find in lower grades, with nice eye appeal.

Let's keep them coming!!

Is this an especially sweet month because of baseball season? Seriously gorgeous cards in this thread. That Goudey has some insanely vibrant color.

Sorry but I just hadda see 'em in the same post; my two (and final) April pickups in a group shot/post together-- do forgive the intrusion of a postwar card. I was able to get a real nice accurate scan done today. April 2014-- and likely all of 2014-- is now officially a wrap for this kid. No April Fool's ;)

Thanks Derek. I was as a bit shocked as well as this is my 7th or 8th one that I have picked up and chalked it as being a reprint too since all the others had come back that way. I even told the seller that I was pretty sure it was coming back to him as a reprint but he was a great guy and had no problem with that but had maintained (as did they all) it was original. So I'll chalk it up as a blind squirrel gets a nut once in a while. :)

Here are the graded cards I spoke about earlier in the thread.

Gorgeous, Brad! You can't do better than Cobb and the Babe!

REA is auctioning off the Dietsche Tigers post card set sans the two Cobbs and the Crawford. But that would give me something to work on. And, in the mean time, my favorite two from the set after the Cobb batting, the Hughie Jennings, and the incredible Coughlin, are included.

My compliments on two really nice additions to your collection.

rob...those are some otherworldly grades on those c46's!

The 8s and 9s are from the breakup of the #1 set on the PSA Registry. I matched the cert#s with the set sold on REA back in 2010. The set had an unbelievable GPA of 7.70. As far as I can tell, there are only 3 C46s that have been graded as Mint. All three were from the PSA registry (nothing that high in the SGC registry) and all three were from the #1 set. I should have used the seller's scans because mine don't do them justice.

Two very interesting articles in the magazine: one on PSA and ASA, and the conflict of interest the TPGs cause by grading cards, and releasing price guides. And, an article about baseball card restoration. Funny how 18 years later, these two topics are still very much at the forefront of the hobby.

Especially for back when Ruth lived. As writing left-handed was considered wrong. Mainly because the ink would smear by left-handed writers.

Hardly unusual for a person in Ruth's day and age, and likely at St. Mary's, to get his left hand smacked with a ruler by a nun if he was writing that way. In fact, even when I was growing up my friends in Catholic school would tell me their similar experience.
When batting I started off emulating my right handed friends. It took me awhile to get the hang of it. And then I tried batting lefty -- that was like stepping inside a Claritin commercial! -- everything is crystal clear. So I ended up a switch hitter. Today, I do different tasks with different hands, but do not consider myself ambidextrous in the exact definition of the word.

Just picked-up my first 19th Century card. What have I gotten myself into? This was an impulse buy. I've done very little research on these, but the image quality just pulled me in. I guess it was down-graded because of the stamp on the back, but being blank anyways, I think it adds to the "character":

I have played baseball and softball for 46 yrs running. I throw and bat left handed. I write right handed. It's not that uncommon. Nice photo btw....

+1. I think the only reason that I write right handing is spending my first six years in Catholic school. The nuns would rap you in the hand if you tried to write left handed!

Also, I picked this card up for the second time in the Sterling auction last night. I love the look and am glad to have it back. I had won it in last September's B&L auction and wound up trading it for four T206's. Sorry for the small scan!

Nice e102 Steve!

I managed to hold on and win an upgrade on one of my favorite e95s in Sterling:

Welcome to the club. I started collecting 19th century the beginning of the year and now all my other cards look boring, lol. Enjoy and ask any questions you have, there is a ton to learn about the cards!!

Won this Bill Bergen T206 last night in Lee's Sterling Sports Auction. I was born in the same hospital that Bill Bergen passed away in 17 years prior.

Just read a great SABR article on Bill Bergen which gives you a great sense of what a top notch defensive catcher he was back in the day. Here is the link to the article:

So got my Gehringer back from PSA For the crossover and it came back as a 5. Which I'm happy with. So glad I didn't have to sell my set I would of been heart broken. Anyway here she is. Very vivid color wish the corners were a lil sharper.

This agglomeration of players from various minor league teams wore Spalding jerseys, but they were known as the McCormicks after their manager, Jim McCormick. They played in the 1912 California Winter League. Shown are:

Top row: Bill Goodman, Chet Chadbourne, Bert Whaling, Charlie Chech, Bill Tozer

Middle row: Dr. Finley (trainer), Roy Castleton, Carl Lewis, McCormick (Mgr.), Kelly, Thomas

Bottom row: Elmer Rieger, Red Killefer, Billy Page

Wow - three GREAT postcards in a row!!

Love the early Ruth and Wagner! Super great registration on both, and far nicer than their technical grades!!

Harry Sutor (Suter) Gilmartin

Nice pick up on that one. Had I not had one it would have gone for quite a bit more :). These are super rare cards. I think I have seen a total of 3-4 in my 17 yrs in the hobby.

Edited to add, your E100 doesn't look trimmed to me, from the scan. (of course the Gilmartin is and was advertised as such)

I am glad you didn't want it, I don't think I could have outbid you. My pockets are not so deep. I am truly excited to get this one.

My pockets aren't deep, I have adjusted to rice & beans and a lean-to tent......

I knew the Sutor was trimmed, but not as much as that Kid Mohler that Mr. Yeakley sold a few years ago. I can live with it!
