last card #82 Wahoo MaDaniel RC

Wahoo McDaniel a Choctaw-Chickasaw Native American, football player, and pro wrestler. A troubled teen, but was accepted into the University Of Oklahoma, where he would skip classes and get caught drinking. Played for the Oilers, Broncos, Jets, and finally chosen by the Dolphins in the 1966 expansion draft. In 1968 he got into a fight with two cops (knocked both of them out) and traded to the Chargers. He retired from pro football before playing any games for San Diego.

He wrestled during the off season and then full time after he retired from football. Highlights include a “table-leg” match with Ric Flair. Flair hit Wahoo on the head with a table leg, but unfortunately the table leg still had a nail in it, and Wahoo really got hurt. Flair quickly pinned Wahoo and regained the heavyweight title. Wahoo retired from wrestling in 1996 and is a member of the WCW Hall of Fame.

Married five times, Wahoo died from kidney failure awaiting a transplant in 2002.

Congrats Larry! '67 Topps is a great little set and Wahoo was the last card I got when I put the set together as well. The story goes that Edward McDaniel got the nickname "Wahoo" because his dad's nickname was "Big Wahoo". He was quite a character they say!

Here's his only other football card. 1967 Royal Castle Dolphins.

Nice job on finishing the set Larry.

Also this is exactly what todays modern game is lacking and what made football more special back in the day..... CHARACTERS.

The NFL/AFL use to be full of lovable characters like Wahoo McDaniel.

In 1977, Johnny Valentine's son Greg Valentine attacked Wahoo and broke his leg in an angle to establish Greg as Johnny's successor. Greg Valentine originally won the title on June 11, 1977, with Wahoo regaining it in Raleigh, NC two months later. On September 7, 1977, Greg Valentine regained the title at the WRAL-TV studio tapings. This angle is particularly remembered for a follow-up interview weeks later with Flair and Valentine throwing change at Wahoo, and Valentine asking Wahoo if he needed a custom-made wheelchair for his fat body.

Congrats as well Larry on completing the set. I am working on this set as well. I am a huge AFL fan and this is from the year of my birth.

Wahoo was a legit tough guy on the football field and in and out of the ring in Pro Wrestling.

When he played with the NY Jets after he made tackles the announcer would shout out to the crowd "in on the tackle, you know who." And, the fans would respond back "Wahoo!"

I like the '67's. Being a Dolphins fan, it was the first team set I completed. The Wahoo was the last card I needed also. :)
