The typical date shuffling in this hobby(most notably the w560 and E210 type 2's, now being considered later releases), has left this one in line for Rookie Card consideration(MLB-wise, at least)

Looks like that severe beater Banks RC reset my habits back towards the HOF RC chase..:) Gotta love hobby ADD...

Somehow, my first pre-war pickup of the year..

Very cool "art stamp" Leon, I didn't even know those things exist! Learn something new every day (on these boards)...

For the second time in the last couple of months, some prewar beauties have walked-in to my favorite shop and the owner gave me first dibs. I couldn't pass on these two. I love the Feller, and it's my first Goudey "heads-up." Enjoy!

Great Feller, I love that set.

Put a bid on this one this morning and was lucky to win it for a good price.

Just got it ; Fabian Gaffke ..... I will greatly appreciate any advice from those of you who have previous experience cleaning the surface of a glossy-finish 1930's photo/card . This is 1 Worch Cigar premium , probably 1935.

The edges/borders at some places had been protected somewhat and you can still see a bit of the original bright white shiny surface .

It sort of looks like just normal airborne grime and perhaps cigarette smoke , and exposure to a lifetime hung on a wall....a few spots that almost look like mold.?

I'll show it again as a '' before and after '' if I have any success restoring the surface but at any rate I need to put it on Tim N.'s thread about the ''Worch Cigar Project'' since there is no Gaffke in any condition currently there. I don't think there's a lot of these around anymore , except for Leon's two SGC 80's.

If this was pertaining to me, I have a regular Worch Mack in a psa 5 holder, unless I am forgetting or missing something. (nice pick up btw)

I bought these because I was nearly certain they were sheet mates.
Harder to tell from my scans but each is not only mis-cut but is cut at a slight angle. Also and again hard to see, but there is a smidgen of the "3" on Veach's far right edge and the same amount missing from Viox:

http://photos.imageevent.com/imoverhere/mym101s/m101s/huge/img762.jpg
http://photos.imageevent.com/imoverhere/mym101s/m101s/huge/Viox.jpg

Alas, it appears I should have looked more closely and/or measured them, because their different length indicates they were probably not together--although they sure do fit hand in glove:
http://photos.imageevent.com/imoverhere/mym101s/dupesothers/huge/img763.jpg

I suppose it's possible that the cards were cut from the sheet in vertical strips and then cut horizontally, which could account for them being different lengths. Hmmm, I'd never considered that. Thoughts?

Not as sharp as many of the clean/crisp OJ images I've seen posted here, but I'm psyched to finally have an example of the one and only Old Hoss. He's been on my want list for a while now. Now time for the always fun visit to his Baseball Reference page.

Very nice! I really like the 1914 Zeider. I think it is "the" unique card in the set. Of course the 1914 Mathewson and Pratt cards had the poses changed, but only the Zeider had two different cards with two different poses in the 1914 set, and had one of those poses (this one) omitted in the 1915 set.

How did it happen?

Nice pick up!

Thrilled to get this and in rare form, graded and mounted. With the hand tinting, true "art"--much like my Shonen postcard for the Babe....And will be fun to ID players (Walsh, Cicotte, etc.)... Feel free to join in or direct me to link where folks have already done that.

The stamp is extremely rare, this is either the 3rd or 4th I've ever seen. Nice pickup! (they are all from 1906 by the way, the two Chicago ones just say 1907 as a way to honor the champs heading into the next season)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I do not see Musial in this photo. June Allyson (note spelling) yes. To her left, right of the photo is Enos Slaughter. The other two I can not ID. Look like coaches to me.

Did that come off of the display that just sold on eBay? I was wondering if that was actually a Worch-issued store display since it was found in St. Paul and looks a little too professional for being home-made.

That doesn't "burst my bubble," because I never had a bubble to burst. I bought this because it was there and 1954 Cardinals, which I think someone on this forum will like (yes, I could very easily be persuaded to part with the photo). I never noticed, though, how much Slaughter and Musial look alike from profile. The long, pointy nose; attached ear-lobes, similar smiles and eyes. I also was thrown by the fact that Slaughter played for the Yankees in 1954. Thanks for the correction. I also "note" the spelling of June Allyson. I'm not sure what possessed me to spell her name wrong.

Won this auction last night--photo, apparently from the railroad company's files, of the Chicago White Sox train stopping under the famous Hanging Bridge in Royal Gorge, Colo., in 1910 on the way to the Coast for spring training. A different photo shows up in tinted postcards and when I posted mine a few days ago it has sparked a popular threat over at the main board where experts have been IDing the players. Fascinating detective work, recommend you check it out.

1905-15 G.D.&D. Artist Signed Baseball Postcard series, this one picturing a Cleveland player (what you can see of him, anyways). Didn't realize until I found this issue in the Sports Postcard Price Guide (1998 by J.L. Mashburn, Pg 94) that the series includes PCs from 12 different teams (Pittsburgh, Brooklyn, Detroit, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, New York, St. Louis, Cleveland, Chicago, and another New York for good measure), all with different pictures and phrases. Neat Team/Type/PC if you like this sort of thing.

I think this might be my first time posting a legitimate pre-war pickup in here... and more importantly...

this is my FIRST t206 :) Picked this one up today (with the help and encouragement of my wife) - scanner is offline for the time being, so I had to use the camera...

It's a beater and there are two specks of paper loss on the back - but the crease doesn't take away from Matty's face, and the registration and colors look great in person... and did I mention, it's my first t206.

Jason,
Nice pickup re the "Old Pete" card, and nice spread of back types and variations!

But, are you saying these 5 examples comprise all of the known back printing types (4) and back variations (2)? I have assumed that each of the 4 back printing types existed with each of the 2 back variations (read top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top), making a total of 8 cards needed to have a complete run. Hopefully, my assumption is wrong, which would mean that I am much closer to a complete back run that I thought I was!

Thanks Val.....you might be right. I'm pretty new to the set. I've only been collecting it for less than a year. From the research I've done, I've found that only the Type 1 back is found in both "regular" and "reverse". If you or anybody more educated on this knows of a Type 2 or Type 3 back found in "reverse" or a Type 4 back found in "regular", I would be interested to know.

Currently, my assumption is that there are 4 back types with only Type 1 having an additional "reverse" variation which are the 5 I posted.

Thanks

Jason, thanks for responding. I have no doubt that your E121/80 knowledge is greater than mine, as I don't collect this (or any) set. But, with the certain players whose cards I collect (WaJo, Sam Rice & all the other 1924 Senators), I am trying to get an example of each of the E121/80 back types and variations. Last night, I was able to snag a Type 2 "regular" back of WaJo on eBay.
Best,

I call this Christy wears lipstick. So, you guys can tell me if I am right (I am still learning about this hobby), but I think this would be the registration is off? I have two questions, though. One, if the red ink shifted, then why is it off on both the left and the right side? Two, is the stray red dots up by the top of his head, on the left side, drops of ink from the print being a little sloppy, or is it something that got on the card later (like a drop of kool-aid)? Anyway, I think this is a pretty "kool" card.

Also great when the life story is so amazing--from World Series hero w/ Miracle Braves to World War I hero--and then served during World War II. Still a field named after him at Ft. Benning....
